July 24, 1989 – Tony’s Town Square Restaurant Opens in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

“Everybody loves Italian, but this is no ordinary Italian restaurant! It’s where Lady and the Tramp had their first kiss.”

On July 24, 1989, the casual dining restaurant Tony’s Town Square Restaurant opened in the Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World, taking the place of the Town Square Café. Named after the restaurant featured in the animated feature Lady and the Tramp, the restaurant features several pieces of décor that pay homage to the couple, including a fountain depicting the canine pair. The restaurant features an Italian menu, including shrimp scampi and the ever popular spaghetti and meatballs.

July 14

July 14, 1981 – Disney’s First Ice Show, World on Ice, Premieres

On July 14, 1981, Disney’s first edition of the ice show, World on Ice premiered in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It was and continues to be produced by Feld Entertainment, and toured 20 major cities within the United States. The show was popular enough to continue with a new theme each year, including Great Ice Odyssey in 1982, Magic Kingdom on Ice in 1983, and Happy Birthday! Donald in 1984. The themes would continue, but run for several years at a time, usually promoting a Disney film (as in the cases of Aladdin and Toy Story). In 1986, the show became international with a tour in Japan, and by 1994, the show had grown to seven productions on six continents. In 1996, the show overall show was renamed to its current moniker, Disney on Ice. The show in a part of the Disney Theatrical Group.

July 4, 1984 – The Circle-Vision Attraction American Journeys Opens in Disneyland

On July 4, 1984, the Circle-Vision film attraction American Journeys opened in Disneyland. The film uses the Circle-Vision 360° technique, also used in Epcot’s O Canada! and Wonders of China; the technique includes nine screens arranged in a circle, with nine cameras used to film the scenery, giving the audience the perspective of really being in the scene. American Journeys, like its predecessor America the Beautiful, captured many highlights of the United States. A version of the film opened in Walt Disney World’s Tomorrowland on September 15, 1984, as well as in Tokyo Disneyland on May 17, 1986. The Disneyland attraction ended its run on July 7, 1996.

July 3, 1984 – The Restaurant Bistro de Paris Opens in Epcot’s France Pavilion

On July 3, 1984, the table-service restaurant Bistro de Paris opened in the France Pavilion of Epcot’s World Showcase. Thanks to the popularity of the pavilion’s first restaurant, Les Chefs de France, it was decided by executives to add another restaurant in the empty space in Les Chefs upstairs area. The restaurant was similar to Les Chefs in that it served fine French cuisine, with standard dishes including filet mignon and crème brulee. On July 31, 2012, the restaurant was closed; it reopened in December as Monsieur Paul.

June 28, 1988 – The Walt Disney World Restaurant Narcoossee’s Opens in the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

On June 28, 1988, the signature dining restaurant Narcoossee’s opened its doors from its location in Walt Disney World’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. The restaurant’s menu serves a selection of seafood and steak, including whole-steamed Maine lobster, one of Narcoossee’s famous delicacies. The restaurant features a business casual dress code, requesting that guests do not wear tank tops, swim suits, and shirts with offensive language or graphics. Guests are given a view of the Magic Kingdom, and in the evening, are able to view the Wishes fireworks show from their table; the restaurant plays the music for the show to give guests the experience of the show while they dine.

May 25, 1983 – The Pinocchio’s Daring Journey Attraction Opens in Disneyland

“Board a woodcarver’s cart and take off on a fantastic journey that revisits the beloved tale of Pinocchio and his conscience, Jiminy Cricket.”

On May 25, 1983, the Disneyland attraction Pinocchio’s Daring Journey opened in Disneyland. A Pinocchio-themed attraction had long been in the works at WED Enterprises, but it wasn’t until the opening of the new Fantasyland on this very day that the attraction became a reality. Surprisingly, this attraction opened in Tokyo Disneyland a month before the Disneyland version, as the timeline for Tokyo Disneyland’s grand opening resulted in the attraction opening before Fantasyland’s revamp was finished. The attraction takes guests through the events of the classic film, beginning at Stromboli’s Puppet Theater. Known as a “dark ride,” the attraction involves show lighting with the figures painted in black light paint, illuminated with ultraviolet light, along with several other special effects.

May 21, 1984 – Clarence “Ducky” Nash is Honored at Grauman’s Chinese Theater

On May 21, 1984, Clarence “Ducky” Nash, original voice of Donald Duck, and the character himself were on hand at a special ceremony honoring Nash at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, where Nash placed Donald Duck’s footprints in cement. Nash’s ceremony was the 150th ceremony held by the landmark theater, and coincided with the celebrations of Donald Duck’s 50th birthday. At the time, Nash had mostly retired from voicing the character, but joined in the festivities of the year honoring the character he brought to life.

May 6, 1988 – The Norway Pavilion Opens in Epcot’s World Showcase

On May 6, 1988, the Norway Pavilion opened in Epcot’s World Showcase at Walt Disney World. This is the most recent country to be added to the showcase. The area features the Maelstrom attraction, a boat ride that explores the heritage of Norway, as well as the myth of the trolls; also featured is the Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe, a quick service bakery filled with Norwegian delicacies, including the famous “School Bread” – a sweet bun filled with vanilla crème custard and topped with toasted coconut. Norway is represented by the Stave Church Gallery, which features an exhibit of the culture and history of the country that inspired the animated film Frozen. Norway also houses the Akershus Royal Banquet Hall, which features a special character dining experience of breakfast with the Disney Princesses.

May 1, 1989 – The Quick-Service Shop Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction Opens

“Dinosaur Gertie’s…was built as a tribute to ‘Gertie the Dinosaur,’ one of the first well-known animated cartoon stars.”

On May 1, 1989, the quick-service ice-cream shop Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction opened in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios. The shop sells several well-known Disney park favorites, including a Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar and a Waffle Cone. The shop was built as a tribute to Windsor McCay’s “Gertie the Trained Dinosaur,” one of the first popular characters in the history of animated film. Walt considered McCay and his creation to be pioneers in the field of the animated film. There are also dinosaur footprints in the concrete leading to the shop, attesting to the attention to detail each Imagineer brings to a project.

April 23, 1983 – The Fantasy in the Sky Fireworks Show Starts in Tokyo Disneyland

On April 23, 1983, the fireworks show Fantasy in the Sky began its run at Tokyo Disneyland. Premiering almost a week after the park’s opening, the show was similar to the Disneyland fireworks show that began in 1958. The show ran until 1987, and was replaced with Starlight Fantasy. The show was then brought back in 1995, and ran until 2003.
