June 23, 1938 – Walt Disney Receives Honorary Degree from Harvard

“I am greatly honored to know that the Governing Board of Harvard University have voted to confer upon me the honorary degree of Master of Fine Arts on Commencement Day, June 23rd.”

On June 23, 1938, Walt Disney received an honorary degree from Harvard University, his third honorary degree of the year. With the success of the character Mickey Mouse, as well as the animated feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney was honored for, as Harvard’s then-president James Bryant Conant stated, “…[creating] a modern dwelling for the Muses; his hand controls a multitude of elfish animals who charm all humans by their mirth.”

June 22, 2005 – Disney’s Soda Fountain and Studio Store Opens

On June 22, 2005, Disney’s Soda Fountain and Studio Store opened right next to the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California. Created like an old-fashioned soda fountain, it was a combination ice cream shop and Disney Store, where guests could eat specialty sundaes promoting Disney movies and events, while purchasing limited edition pins and merchandise. It turned into a Ghirardelli’s Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop on November 15, 2013; part of the space was redesigned to be a Disney Studio Store.

June 21, 2016 – The Royal Sommerhus Opens in Epcot’s Norway Pavilion

“You are cordially invited to the Royal Sommerhus to meet the beloved sisters from Arendelle.”

On June 21, 2016, the Royal Sommerhus meet and greet area opened in Epcot’s Norway Pavilion, located in the World Showcase. Here, guests can meet characters Anna and Elsa from the popular animated feature film Frozen, complete with a photo session with the princess and queen of the Norway-based country. The character greet experience is so popular that guests have waited hours to get a chance to meet Anna and Elsa.

June 20, 1976 – River Country Water Park Opens in Walt Disney World

“The fun loving, carefree spirit of Huck Finn is alive in River Country.”

On June 20, 1976, the water park River Country opened in Walt Disney World, right next to Fort Wilderness. Designed to resemble an old-fashioned swimming hole the likes of Huckleberry Finn, Imagineers created a miniature mountain range for the five waterslides. Part of the nearby Bay Lake, the Bay Cove area was a half-acre lake with a sand-bottom, and held almost 330,000 gallons of water. The popularity of River Country led to Disney opening two more water parks: Typhoon Lagoon in 1989, and Blizzard Beach in 1995. River Country was permanently closed on September 1, 2001, and was left as an “abandoned” park within Walt Disney World’s property.

June 19, 2015 – The Pixar Short Film Lava Premieres in Theaters

“I have a dream I hope will come true, that you’re here with me and I’m here with you.”

On June 19, 2015, the animated short film Lava premiered in theaters alongside the animated feature film Inside Out. Written and directed by James Ford Murphy, the 7-minute short film is a song sung by Kuana Torres Kahele and Napura Greig. The short is about a lonely volcano who watches all the wildlife couples around him and sings a song about his dream to find his mate. He sings every day, hoping somehow he will find love. After many years alone, the volcano is about to become extinct, unaware that an underground volcano has heard him the entire time and has fallen in love with him. She erupts to the surface, ready to meet him. As he has used up all of his lava, he is unable to sing his song to her; as she sings his song back, he is revived, and the two are joined together, singing about their “lava.”

June 18, 1988 – The Live Show Minnie’s Surprise Birthday Party Begins

“Mickey Mouse! You are our hero! Mickey Mouse! You’re everyone’s friend!”

On June 18, 1988, the live stage show Minnie’s Surprise Birthday Party began in Mickey’s Birthdayland in Walt Disney World. Part of the birthday celebrations to honor Mickey’s 60th birthday, the show featured Minnie Mouse welcoming guests into a special area to surprise Mickey with a party. On hand to celebrate are Donald, Goofy, Pluto, Chip, Dale, and Minnie’s next door neighbor Christy. Everyone sets to work to prepare for the party, with Goofy taking the task of baking the cake, with help from Pluto. Through a series of misadventures, everyone has a turn of baking the cake, adding stranger and stranger ingredients, with Pluto continually adding a dog bone. Finally, Mickey arrives, and is surprised by all of his friends, including the guests in the audience. The show ran until April 22, 1990, and was succeeded by Mickey’s Magical TV World on April 26, 1990.

June 17, 2015 – Zuri’s Sweets Opens in Disney’s Animal Kingdom

“After an amazing day of tracking animals and trekking forests, reward yourself with some homemade sweets and treasured treats!”

On June 17, 2015, the confectionary Zuri’s Sweets opened at the Harambe Market in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park. As with many stores and attractions within Disney Parks, Zuri’s Sweets tells the story of Miss Zuri, the owner, who started her business decades earlier and is considered an inspiration to others in Harambe for her entrepreneurial and imaginative spirit. The shop features about 80 kinds of treats, including several kinds of candy apples, animal-themed sweets, and a gourmet cocoa set.

June 16, 2016 – Be Our Guest Boutique Opens in Shanghai Disney

“Put our service to the test!”

On June 16, 2016, the themed store Be Our Guest Boutique opened in Shanghai Disney’s Fantasyland area. Taking its design cues from the animated feature Beauty and the Beast, the store sells various home décor pieces, collectibles, and other princess-themed toys and costumes for children.

June 15, 2012 – Big Top Toys Opens in Disney California Adventure

“Big Top Toys features innovative and interactive toys, games and plush inspired by Disney characters.”

On June 15, 2012, the merchandise stop Big Top Toys opened in Disney California Adventure park. Themed after the animated feature film Dumbo, the shop was a gigantic toy store, featuring all sorts of Disney toys, ranging from princess dolls to plush toys.

June 14, 1996 – The Pocahontas Indian Village Play Area Opens in Disneyland Paris

“Head for the shadow of Thunder Mesa at Pocahontas Indian Village and set your sights on what lies just around the river bend.”

On June 14, 1996, the Frontierland play area Pocahontas Indian Village opened in Disneyland Paris. Based on the animated feature film Pocahontas, young guests can climb, swing, and explore the play area “based on a traditional Native American settlement,” which replaced the Indian Canoes dock.
