January 1, 2008 – The Captain’s Grille Opens in Walt Disney World

On January 1, 2008, the Captain’s Grille opened in Walt Disney World’s Yacht Club Resort, replacing the Yacht Club Galley. The restaurant’s theme matched that of the Yacht Club Resort, specializing in classic seafood dishes. It served breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with dishes ranging from smoked salmon on a toasted bagel, New England-style lobster roll, and buttermilk fried rock shrimp. The restaurant closed on May 24, 2017, and the area was turned into the Ale & Compass Restaurant on November 4, 2017.

December 29, 1974 – John Lennon Signs Papers at Walt Disney World Dissolving The Beatles

On December 29, 1974, it is widely believed that John Lennon, who was staying on vacation at Walt Disney World’s Polynesian Resort, signed the paperwork that effectively dissolved the partnership of the band the Beatles. Although the rest of the band had signed the papers at Apple Headquarters, Lennon had been a no-show at the meeting, and instead had gone to celebrate Christmas at Walt Disney World with his secretary and lover May Pang.

December 25, 1999 – The Television Special Walt Disney World’s Very Merry Christmas Parade Premieres on ABC

On December 24, 1999, the holiday television special Walt Disney World’s Very Merry Christmas Parade premiered on ABC. This was the 17th annual holiday parade from the Florida parks. Although the parade had been a staple of holiday specials since the 1980s, this special was notable for deviating from the norm and airing at nighttime instead of the daytime. This parade was hosted by Mitchell Ryan, Susan Sullivan, and Wayne Brady, and featured musical performances by *NSYNC, 98 Degrees, Harry Connick Jr., SHeDAISY, and James Ingram.

December 16, 2017 – The Hyper-Reality Experience Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire Opens in Disney Springs

“The galaxy needs you!”

On December 16, 2017, the “hyper-reality” experience Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire opened in Disney Springs. A collaboration between Disney, ILMxLAB, and The VOID, this virtual reality experience puts guests in the world of Star Wars; guests go undercover as stormtroopers before the events of the film Rogue One, and must steal the Empire’s secret plans. There are several Star Wars Easter eggs, as well as the opportunity to make the adventure unique through a variety of actions. This experience also opened on January 5, 2018, in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney area.

December 14, 2003 – Everything POP Shopping and Dining Opens in Disney’s Pop Century Resort

“Sate appetites large and small with delicious dishes from a variety of tempting food stations.”

On December 14, 2003, the shopping center and food court area of Walt Disney World’s Pop Century Resort , known as Everything POP Shopping and Dining, opened. Guests can wander through and get a meal at a variety of quick-service food areas, as well as purchase a variety of Disney merchandise.

December 13, 2010 – The Food Location Mrs. Potts’ Cupboard Closes

On December 13, 2010, the quick-service food location Mrs. Potts’ Cupboard closed. Open since March of 1994 after replacing The Round Table, the location served a variety of ice cream treats and drinks. The structure was revamped whenever major changes came to Fantasyland, with changed including the addition of a clock tower, and a thatched roof. It was replaced by Storybook Treats.

December 6, 2012 – The Attraction Under the Sea: Voyage of the Little Mermaid Opens in Walt Disney World

“Descend below the waves – without ever getting wet – for a whimsical musical adventure awash with scenes from the animated classic.”

On December 6, 2012, the dark-ride attraction Under the Sea: Voyage of the Little Mermaid opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park as part of the New Fantasyland expansion. Guests board a clamshell and take a journey through the story of The Little Mermaid, complete with music and dancing audio-animatronic figures. The attraction was also given an interactive queue area, where guests need to find objects to help Scuttle. This attraction is similar to The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure in Disney California Adventure park.

November 29, 2009 – Sleigh Rides are Offered at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort

“…a fire-engine red sleigh with garland and holiday lights will take you through parts of the 700-acre backwoods resort.”

On November 29, 2009, the first sleigh rides were offered at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground at Walt Disney World. Part of the park’s holiday offerings, the sleigh ride began from the Blacksmith’s Shop in the Settlement area and took guests through the scenic woods for a 25-minute ride. The ride cost $60 per group, and has become a popular holiday tradition for the resort.

November 25, 1971 – The Circarama Film America the Beautiful Begins Showing in Walt Disney World

“She is a rich land, and a rare land. A fresh, and fair, land.”

On November 25, 1971, the 360 degree film (known technically as a Circarama film) America the Beautiful began showing in Walt Disney World’s Tomorrowland. It originally was shown at the Brussels World’s Fair in 1958, and was brought to Disneyland in 1960; it was reshot a few times, including once for America’s Bicentennial celebrations, and it eventually closed in Disneyland on January 3, 1984, and was replaced by American Journeys. The original Walt Disney World showing of the film lasted until March 15, 1974; it was brought back on March 15, 1975, and lasted until September 9, 1984.

November 24, 1995 – The Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights Begins Showing in Walt Disney World

On November 24, 1995, the popular holiday display Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights began showing on the Residential Street Backlot area of Disney-MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios Park). This attraction began in 1986 as a neighborhood holiday light show by Jennings and Mitzi Osborne of Little Rock, Arkansas. The display grew bigger and bigger throughout the years, with more and more people stopping by to see the display; neighbors filed a lawsuit, and the light display was shut down by the Arkansas Supreme Court. This lawsuit caught the attention of Disney, who offered to set up the display in Disney-MGM rather than a residential neighborhood in Orlando. The attraction was a top draw for guests during the holiday season, especially with the addition of the “dancing lights,” which were timed along to a list of holiday music. The display ended its run on January 6, 2016.
