February 18, 2008 – Disney’s Vero Beach Honors Baseball Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda

“Disney’s Vero Beach has enjoyed a tremendous relationship with Tommy Lasorda and the Los Angeles Dodgers through the years, and we’re absolutely thrilled to name such a central part of our resort in Mr. Lasorda’s honor.” – Sonya Deese-Byrnes, General Manager of Disney Vacation Club Resorts

On February 18, 2008, a special ceremony was held at Disney’s Vero Beach resort, a Disney Vacation Club resort in Walt Disney World. This ceremony honored former Los Angeles Dodgers’ former manager and Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda by renaming the recreation field of the resort as Lasorda Field; the Dodgers have used Vero Beach as a training area, with the Dodgertown training complex opening in 1948. Lasorda was on hand at the renaming ceremony to throw out the first pitch on the field, and was joined at the ceremony by several representatives from the Walt Disney Company, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and children from the local Boys & Girls Club.

February 13, 1993 – Lumiere’s Kitchen Opens in Walt Disney World

On February 13, 1993, the quick service restaurant Lumiere’s Kitchen opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. Replacing the Black Cauldron-themed restaurant Gurgi’s Munchies & Crunchies, the restaurant served general quick-service fare, such as chicken nuggets and grilled cheese. The restaurant closed on April 30, 2006, and was replaced by the Village Fry Shoppe.

February 11, 2011 – Mickey’s Toontown Fair Closes in Walt Disney World

On February 11, 2011, the Mickey’s Toontown Fair area closed in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. The area originally opened on June 18, 1988 as Mickey’s Birthdayland, which was created to celebrate Mickey’s 60th birthday; after the birthday celebrations were over, it became Mickey’s Starland on May 26, 1990, and then became Mickey’s Toontown Fair on June 29, 1996. The area featured Disney character-related attractions, such as Mickey’s Country House; Minnie’s Country House; Donald’s Boat; and The Barnstomer, a Goofy-themed rollercoaster. The area was closed due to the expansion of Fantasyland, and was eventually replaced by the Storybook Circus area; however, the area reused The Barnstormer attraction, which was retooled to fit the circus theme of the area.

February 6, 2011 – The Quick Service Restaurant Tortuga Tavern Opens in Walt Disney World

“Steal away to this delightful pirate haunt and prepare for the tastiest grub this side of Port Royal!”

On February 6, 2011, the quick service restaurant Tortuga Tavern opened in the Magic Kingdom Park of Walt Disney World, near the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. Replacing the former El Pirata y el Perico Restaurante, the restaurant’s theme was updated to fit the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The restaurant features a variety of entrees, such as a chipotle barbecue short rib, short-rib topped hot dog, and a turkey leg.

February 5, 2017 – The Starring Rolls Café Closes in Hollywood Studios

On February 5, 2017, the Starring Rolls Café officially closed in Hollywood Studios. Open since May 1, 1989, the café served as a beloved pastry shop within the park, featuring guest favorites such as the Butterfinger Cupcake, the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcake, and the pastrami sandwich. Many of Starring Rolls’ delicacies were moved to the new Trolley Car Café and sold alongside Starbucks products.

January 20, 1995 – Courtyard by Marriott Opens in Walt Disney World

On January 20, 1995, the hotel Courtyard by Marriott opened in the Lake Buena Vista area of Walt Disney World. This hotel occupied the spot that had been held by the Howard Johnson Resort Hotel, and had undergone extensive remodeling. It operated under the Marriott banner until 2003, when the resort was purchased by Holiday Inn.

January 19, 1991 – The Shop Legends of Hollywood Opens in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

On January 19, 1991, the merchandise shop Legends of Hollywood opened on Hollywood Boulevard of Disney’s Hollywood Studios park. This version of the shop was short-lived, as it closed on March 9, 1991, and became L.A. Cinema Storage. A new version of this shop opened on Sunset Boulevard on June 12, 1994, and sells merchandise related to recently released films.

January 18, 2016 – The Quick-Service Restaurant Pizza Planet Arcade Closes

“Today…serving your local Star Cluster…”

On January 18, 2016, the quick-service restaurant Pizza Planet Arcade closed. Located on the Streets of America in Disney’s Hollywood Studios Park, the restaurant was themed after the restaurant of the same name from the Toy Story series of films, and served pizza and salads. The area was originally slated to be a Muppet-themed restaurant, but this changed after the original deal between Jim Henson Productions and the Walt Disney Company fell through; after Pizza Planet Arcade closed in 2016, the place then became the quick-service pizza restaurant PizzeRizzo, themed after the Muppet character Rizzo the Rat.

January 16, 1994 – The First Walt Disney World Marathon Takes Place

On January 16, 1994, the inaugural Walt Disney World Marathon took place. Featuring 8,200 runners, the marathoners were taken through the (at the time) three theme parks: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney-MGM Studios, as well as several highways. Finishers were awarded a medal upon completion featuring Mickey Mouse as a runner. The design of the medal, as well as the course of the marathon, has changed in the over 25 years since its inception, and the number of runners has grown to over 55,000.

January 8, 2010 – The Muppets Appear in the Disney’s Honorary VoluntEars Cavalcade Parade at Disneyland and Walt Disney World

“…the cavalcade celebrates volunteerism and features Kermit, Miss Piggy, along with special floats and vehicles festooned with bright balloons and flanked by parade dancers.”

On January 8, 2010, a special parade kicked off in Disneyland and Walt Disney World, known as Disney’s Honorary VoluntEars Cavalcade Parade. This parade ties in with the new “Give a Disney Day, Get a Disney Day” program set up by Disney, where guests can get a free Disney Theme Park ticket after performing a day of volunteer service with a participating organization; this promotion featured the Muppets as the ambassador characters. This was also the first time that Kermit and Miss Piggy appeared daily in Disneyland. This parade occurred once a day, alongside the Celebrate! A Street Party parade, and pulled guests who had volunteered through the program to be part of the parade.
