June 29, 1996 – Donald’s Boat Opens in Mickey’s Toontown Fair

“…Donald’s boat may make you never want to be a landlubber again!”

On June 29, 1996, the Donald’s Boat attraction opened in the Mickey’s Toontown Fair area of Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. The attraction gave guests the opportunity to explore Donald Duck’s houseboat home, viewing his mementos and priceless treasures, as well as a few other surprises and activities along the way. The attraction was closed on February 11, 2011, but versions still exist in Disneyland’s Toontown and Tokyo Disneyland’s Toontown.

June 21, 1996 – The Hunchback of Notre Dame – A Musical Adventure Stage Show Opens in Disney-MGM Studios

“A cast of medieval puppets and 21 live performers tell the story of the bell ringer Quasimodo in Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame: A Musical Adventure at Disney-MGM Studios.”

On June 21, 1996, the stage show Hunchback of Notre Dame – A Musical Adventure opened at the Backstage Theater in Disney-MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios) at Walt Disney World. Based on the animated feature film The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the show promoted the film and was part of Walt Disney World’s 25th anniversary celebrations. The show closed its run on September 28, 2002.

June 20, 1995 – The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter Attraction Opens in Walt Disney World

“If something can’t be done with X-S, then it shouldn’t be done at all.”

On June 20, 1995, the Tomorrowland attraction The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. A joint production between Disney and George Lucas, it was a dark sci-fi themed interactive sensory adventure, using binaural sound and other effects to enhance the experience. The attraction’s story takes place in the laboratory for X-S Tech, which is giving guests a demonstration of their new interplanetary teleportation device; this goes awry when an alien is accidentally transported into the lab and terrorizes the guests. The attraction was officially closed on October 11, 2003. On November 16, 2004, Stitch’s Great Escape! opened in its place, using most of the technology from the previous attraction.

June 18

June 18, 1988 – The Meet-and-Greet Area Mickey’s Hollywood Theater Opens in Walt Disney World

On June 18, 1988, the special meet-and-greet area Mickey’s Hollywood Theater opened in the Mickey’s Birthdayland area of Magic Kingdom Park. It was designed to look like Mickey’s dressing room, so as to give guests the impression that they are meeting Mickey after his live show. Mickey’s Hollywood Theater remained after the area became Mickey’s Starland, but closed on March 11, 1996, when the area was remodeled to become Mickey’s Toontown Fair.

June 17, 2016 – The Merchandise Stop The Wandering Reindeer Opens in Epcot

“…Wandering Reindeer is a shopper’s delight that adds to the flurry of Frozen fun – and continues the theme of wintery good times with style!”

On June 17, 2016, the specialty merchandise stop The Wandering Reindeer opened in Epcot’s World Showcase in the Norway Pavilion. Coinciding with the addition of elements from the animated feature film Frozen, the store sells a variety of merchandise featuring the characters, including apparel and plush toys.

June 12, 1994 – The Merchandise Store Legends of Hollywood Opens in Hollywood Studios

Star Wars fans, your shop has come in!”

On June 12, 1994, the specialty merchandise store opened in Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World. Located on Sunset Boulevard, the store changes often to fit a popular theme; as of 2017, the store focuses on special merchandise from the Star Wars franchise, including kitchenware, ear hats, and “creations from top designers.”

June 1, 2002 – The Attraction Journey into Imagination with Figment Reopens

“A little imagination goes a long way.”

On June 1, 2002, the Future World attraction Journey into Imagination reopened in Epcot. It was the first change to the attraction since its total revision in October of 1999. The original attraction opened in 1983, and went through many changes throughout its run, including a replacement of lead character Dreamfinder to Dr. Nigel Channing. The attraction still features the character of Figment, a small purple dragon that helps lead guests through the wild world of imagination. While originally sponsored by Kodak, the sponsorship ended in 2010.

May 31, 2008 – Pixar Place Opens in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

“The stars of Disney Pixar’s Toy Story films are ‘ready on set’ at Woody’s Picture Shootin’ Corral.”

On May 31, 2008, the Pixar-themed area Pixar Place opened in Disney’s Hollywood Studios Park. The area features the popular attraction Toy Story Midway Mania, along with a meet and greet with Toy Story characters Woody and Buzz, and the Toy Story Dept. merchandise store.

May 29, 1986 – New Narration is Added to the Spaceship Earth Attraction

On May 29, 1986, a new script for the Spaceship Earth attraction was added, with narration performed by broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite. Cronkite’s narration would last until the attraction’s major rebuild in 1994. The attraction, at the time, took guests through a journey through how communication evolved, making Cronkite the perfect narrator for the subject matter. Jeremy Irons would supersede Cronkite in 1994, with Dame Just Dench following after another revamp in the attraction in 2007.

May 28, 2014 – The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Attraction Officially Opens

“Rock around like never before.”

On May 28, 2014, the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train attraction officially opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park, after it was dedicated on May 2. Considered the crown jewel of the New Fantasyland area of the park, the ride features never-seen-before Audio-Animatronic technology, as well as an innovative ride system that allows each car to swing individually as it races around the track through the dwarfs’ mine shaft. As the ride can have a wait time up to over two hours long, an interactive queue was added to entertain guests so they can “sort jewels” as they wait to board the mine train. Several of the pieces of the old attraction Snow White’s Scary Adventures were reused in this attraction.
