May 14, 1972 – The First Disneyana Auction Takes Place in Los Angeles, California

On May 14, 1972, the first auction of Disney memorabilia, known as “Disneyana,” was held by Sotheby’s in Los Angeles, California. Disney memorabilia had been around since the late 1920s, when merchandise featuring Mickey Mouse was sold, ranging from plush toys to watches. The term itself came into prominence with the 1974 book Disneyana: Walt Disney Collectables by Cecil Munsey. The auction contained nearly 200 items, although some items were other cartoon memorabilia pieces. The Disney pieces range from a Mickey and Minnie alarm clock, a watering can, watches, cels from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Bambi signed by Walt Disney, and figurines. The pieces were from the collections of New York businessman Robert Lesser, and Kay Kamen, who helped created the whole licensing industry through his work with Disney.

February 21, 1996 – Disney.com Goes Live

On February 21, 1996, the first online offering from Disney, known as Disney.com, went live. The purpose of the site was to provide information pertaining to all things Disney, including past, present, and upcoming feature films, offerings from the assorted television channels, information about the theme parks, and showcases of Disney merchandise. Since the live date, the site has undergone several changes, including a major overhaul that was announced by CEO Bob Iger in 2007. A new service called Disney Xtreme Digital (Disney XD) was unveiled the same year, but was later de-emphasized and removed to become the name of a new Disney digital cable channel.

February 15, 2005 – The New Walt Disney Records Imprint, Disney Sound, Has its First Release

On February 15, 2005, the new Walt Disney Records imprint Disney Sound established itself with its first release. Disney Sound, founded in 2004,’s has a mission to create original music the whole family could enjoy, separate from music that was being released through Disney Pearl and the Walt Disney Records main label. Its first release was the album Here Come the ABCs by the alternative band They Might Be Giants. The album was a success, peaking at number one on the Billboard Children’s Music Chart and being certified Gold by the RIAA.

November 6, 2001 – The Walt Disney Company Acquires The Baby Einstein Company

On November 6, 2001, The Walt Disney Company made final the acquisition of the innovative media company for babies and toddlers, The Baby Einstein Company. In a press release on this day, Disney announced that the company’s founders, Julie Aigner-Clark and William Clark, would serve as consultants for the company, which would launch under the Disney Banner in late 2002. Aigner-Clark was quoted as saying “We’re thrilled to be putting our grass roots brand in the hands of The Walt Disney Company, and to watch our ‘baby’ grow up.” The Baby Einstein Company has won several awards since its founding, including the Video of the Year Award from Child Magazine; the company’s range spans various media types, including videotapes, DVDs, CDs, and books. The acquisition allows the company’s reach to expand internationally through retail channels.

August 31, 2009 – Disney Announces the Acquisition of Marvel Entertainment

On August 31, 2009, The Walt Disney Company announced a surprise deal to acquire Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion in cash and stock. The deal allows Disney to take Marvel’s cast of characters across the different media platforms Disney has at their disposal; Iger told investors that Pixar was especially excited about the opportunities this acquisition could produce. Disney also noted that they plan to bring to the forefront many characters from the Marvel library that weren’t well known. When the deal was announced, the Marvel stock shot up 26%.
