September 13, 1920 – Performer and Disney Legend Wally Boag is Born

“My longest job before the Golden Horseshoe Revue was 54 weeks. And to think it all began with a two-week contract I signed with Walt Disney when the park opened.”

On September 13, 1920, longtime Disneyland performer Wallace Vincent Boag was born in Portland, Oregon. A trained dancer, Boag was teaching his own dance classes at 16, but had turned his attention to honing his comedic skills at age 19. Boag performed at prestigious venues at a young age, including Radio City Music Hall, the Palladium in London, and the Tivoli Theater in Australia. In 1945, Boag was signed with MGM Studios, appearing in such films as Without Love and The Thrill of Romance.

His chance to work with the Disney Studios began in 1955, when a friend told him about auditions for a routine in the new Disneyland Park known as the “Golden Horseshoe Revue.” Boag won a role in the show, and soon became a favorite of Walt’s. While performing the Revue, Boag would also make appearances on “The Mickey Mouse Club,” “Disneyland,” and “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color,” particularly in an episode of the latter program celebrating the Revue’s 10,000th performance in 1962. Boag also appeared in Disney films, including The Absent-Minded Professor and The Love Bug; in addition to these, Boag provided the voice of Jose the parrot in the Enchanted Tiki Room. In 1971, Boag left California to open the Diamond Horseshoe Revue at Walt Disney World, but returned to Disneyland where he remained until his retirement on January 28, 1982. He was inducted as a Disney Legend in 1995, and passed away on June 3, 2011.

“Bill Nye the Science Guy: brought to you by air. Without air, you ain’t flying.”

On September 10, 1993, the educational show Bill Nye the Science Guy premiered on PBS. The show was hosted by noted scientist Bill Nye, and was produced by Disney Educational Productions, with distribution by Disney-ABC Domestic Television. The show would present a topic, which Nye would explain with visuals in his lab. For instance, the first episode, Flight, explained to the audience how air pressure makes things fly. Most episodes would feature a parody of a pop song, with the song’s lyrics summarizing the lesson learned in the episode. The show was very popular among children, and ran until June 1998, winning several Emmy Awards, including one for Outstanding Children’s Series in 1999 and 2000.

“Now the boy’s in school, he’s in training.”

On August 31, 1998, the Disney Channel Original Series Hercules: The Animated Series premiered with its first episode, “Hercules and the Apollo Mission.” The series was based on the 1997 film Hercules, and tells the story of a teenaged Hercules attending school. Most of the cast members from the original film reprised their roles in the series, with new characters Cassandra (Sandra Bernhard) and Icarus (French Stewart) playing the parts of Hercules’ school friends. Tate Donovan voiced Hercules, James Woods voiced Hades, and Robert Costanzo voiced Philoctetes. The show’s timeline makes it a midquel, with the events neither preceding nor following the timeline of the film. However, as many of the events of the series contradict events from the film, the show is not considered canon. It aired for 65 episodes, and finished its run on March 1, 1999.

The first episode, “Hercules and the Apollo Mission,” finds Hercules and his friends participating in an intern week at their school. Hercules is the only student not happy with his job, as he has to work at a fast food restaurant. He asks his father, Zeus, for help getting a better job, and Zeus grants him the job of driving Apollo’s chariot across the sky. Unfortunately, Pain and Panic are on hand to carry out Hades’ scheme to bring down Hercules, which includes unchaining the sun from the chariot. Hercules and Icarus must work together to bring the sun back into the sky before Hades is crowned the new king of Olympus.

August 29, 1998 – The Disney Channel Original Movie Brink! Premieres

“We skate for fun. We’re soul skaters.”

On August 29, 1998, the Disney Channel Original Movie Brink! premiered. The film is considered a loose, modern adaptation of the 1962 made-for-television Disney film Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates, although the backdrop is inline skating in California rather than ice skating in Holland. The film was directed by Greg Beeman, produced by Bernadette Caulfield, and written by Jeff Schechter. It starred Erik von Detten as Brink, Sam Horrigan as Val, and Christina Vidal as Gabriella.

Andy Brinker, known by others as “Brink,” and his friends Peter, Jordy, and Gabriella, call themselves “Soul Skaters” – those who skate for fun rather than make a profit. Their free-skating attitude clashes with a sponsored team known as the X-Bladz, led by their classmate Val. Although it goes against what Brink believes, he decides to join the X-Bladz once he finds his family is in financial difficulty, hoping to earn enough money to help. His friends don’t realize what Brink has done, but when they do, they feel betrayed, and challenge the X-Bladz to a downhill race.

The X-Bladz win, thanks to Val cheating and causing Gabriella to fall and wind up seriously hurt. The Soul Skaters disown Brink, calling him a sell-out. After seeing his son work so hard to help his family, including working at a dog-grooming store called “Pup’N Suds,” Brink’s father decides to help his son and the Soul Skaters prepare for a local competition and revenge against the X-Bladz. The Soul Skaters accept Brink back in, and end up sponsored by the dog-grooming store. At the competition, it comes down to Brink and Val, with Val again trying to cheat. Brink wins, and Val is kicked out of the X-Bladz for cheating. Although Brink is offered the chance to become the captain of the X-Bladz, he turns it down to go back to his friends and their attitude of skating for fun, not profit.

August 27, 1964 – The Live-Action and Animated Film Mary Poppins Premieres at Grauman’s Chinese Theater

“We’re looking forward to this [film], because it’s a fine combination when you can get Walt Disney and Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke together. I think it should be a lot of fun.” – Actor James Franciscus.

On August 27, 1964, the film Mary Poppins had its Hollywood premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, California. The premiere was broadcast live on Los Angeles television, with a separate radio broadcast of the festivities. The premiere guests were interviewed at the two separate stations. Guests included Maureen O’Hara, James Franciscus, Celeste Holm, Walter Slezack, the cast of the Dick Van Dyke Show, Agnes Moorehead, Annette Funicello and her fiancé Jack Gilardi, Roddy McDowall, Suzanne Pleshette, Carol Lynley, Buddy Ebsen, Kathryn Grayson, Ann Miller, and Brian Keith, among others. Members of the cast and crew of the film also attended, including director Robert Stevenson, who gave a tribute to CalArts (which had opened a mere three years prior), Reta Shaw (the cook, Mrs. Brill), and co-writer and co-producer Bill Walsh.

The festivities included characters dressed as familiar Disney characters, such as Goofy, the Big Bad Wolf, and the Seven Dwarves. Costumed characters of the penguins, as well as a band of pearlies, were also part of the entertainment, with the penguins dancing with Dick Van Dyke on his arrival. When asked about the film, Van Dyke said, “It’s my third motion picture, but the best one I’ve ever been in, the best one I ever will be in, if I live to be 150 years old. To me, this is the greatest family classic of all time…I’m so proud to be in this picture, I can’t stand it.” Van Dyke, along with Julie Andrews and Walt Disney, were interviewed together near the end of the broadcast, with all three proud of the film and looking forward to premiere.

After the premiere, Technicolor hosted a party for the guests at the parking lot next door to the theater. A radio broadcast was also provided, with every guest interviewed raving about the film, calling it a classic, and stating that the premiere was very reminiscent of the Hollywood premieres of old. Andrews and Van Dyke were proclaimed to be the greatest two new stars of the time.

August 21, 2004 – The Disney Channel Original Series Brandy & Mr. Whiskers Premieres

“You’ve got to be kidding me, this is not a mall! Malls have stores and movie theaters and food courts! Not filthy animals bathing in their own drinking water!”

On August 21, 2004, the first four episodes of the Disney Channel Original Series Brandy & Mr. Whiskers premiered. The show was about a dog named Brandy Harrington (voiced by Kaley Cuoco) and a rabbit named Mr. Whiskers (voiced by Charlie Adler), and their adventures in the Amazon rainforest. Although their personalities are miles apart, the  two have to work together to survive in the rainforest, which is alien territory to them both. The show lasted only two seasons, and has not been released on DVD.

The first half of the pilot episode, “Mr. Whisker’s First Friend,” has Brandy and Mr. Whiskers meeting on an airplane flying over the Amazon rainforest.  When Brandy asks Mr. Whiskers to turn on the light so she can read a magazine, he accidentally pulls the emergency escape hatch in the cargo hold, and the two fall into the rainforest. Brandy, angered by this turn of events, trades Mr. Whiskers for a map to help her escape, but in the end, she gets Mr. Whiskers back, and the two build a treehouse. The second half, “The Babysitter’s Flub,” finds Brandy and Mr. Whiskers babysitting Mama Crock’s eggs. The other episodes shown were “Cyranosaurus Rex/To The Moon, Whiskers,” “Lack of Brains vs. Brawns/The No Sleep Over,” and “The Fashion Fascist/Happy Birthdays.”

July 31, 1995 – The Walt Disney Company and Capital Cities/ABC Announce Their $19 Billion Merger

“I feel more comfortable with the two companies together.” – Michael Eisner, former CEO of The Walt Disney Company

On July 31, 1995, The Walt Disney Company and Capital Cities/American Broadcasting Company announced plans for a $19 billion merger, which was completed on February 9, 1996. The deal meant that Disney would acquire 9 VHF (Very High Frequency) and 1 UHF (Ultra High Frequency) television stations; 11 AM and 10 FM radio stations; a percentage of ESPN, The History Channel, A&E Network, and Lifetime Television; and a publishing group consisting on 85 trade journals, 18 shopping guides, 2 consumer magazines, 21 weeklies, and 7 daily newspapers – however, most of this publishing group would eventually be sold. With this merger, the broadcasting name of Capital Cities/ABC was renamed ABC, Inc., but the network still uses the name American Broadcasting Companies. Interestingly enough, the president of ABC at the time, Robert Iger, is now the CEO of The Walt Disney Company.

The partnership between ABC and Disney goes back to 1954, when Walt Disney agreed to a regular network television show if they would help invest in the Disneyland project. ABC agreed, providing a $500,000 investment up front, and $4.5 million in loans, making ABC a 1/3 owner of Disneyland. Disney remained on the ABC network until 1961, after buying out ABC’s share of Disneyland. After the merger in 1996, many successful shows appeared on the network, from the Saturday morning cartoon block “One Saturday Morning,” to the smash game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, to dramas The Practice and Alias. The network still continues to find success with recent hits that include Lost, Desperate Housewives, Once Upon a Time, Castle, and Revenge.

April 26, 1991 – Dinosaurs Premieres on ABC

“We’d be on a plane, and [Jim Henson] would start to talk about this family of dinosaurs, with a father who wore plaid shirts and had a Brooklyn accent. It always made him laugh.” – Alex Rockwell

On April 26, 1991, the show Dinosaurs premiered on ABC. Created by Jim Henson Associates, Dinosaurs was the idea of Jim Henson and Alex Rockwell, who pitched it to Disney’s television division. The show follows the Sinclairs, a prehistoric blue-collar family. It starred Stuart Panking as the voice of Earl Sinclair, Jessica Walter as the voice of Fran Sinclair, and John Kennedy as the voice of Baby. The show won an Emmy in 1991 for Art Direction, and lasted for four seasons

Although the show was Henson’s idea, he passed away before it could come to fruition. His son Brian then worked with producer Michael Jacobs to bring it to the small screen. Production began in 1991, with filming on the same lot that The Muppet Movie had been filmed thirteen years prior. The dinosaurs were costumed actors with animatronic heads; the performers controlled the faces by remote control rigs from a distance. The show received good reviews and high ratings, proving that Jim Henson Productions could continue after Jim Henson’s death.
