February 24, 1993 – Beauty and the Beast Wins Five Grammy Awards

“Tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme, Beauty and the Beast.”

On February 24, 1993, the Grammy Awards were held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. Out of seven nominations, the soundtrack to the animated feature film Beauty and the Beast won five awards that night. The soundtrack itself won the award for Best Album for Children, as well as Best Instrumental Composition Written for a Motion Picture or for Television. The pop version of the song “Beauty and the Beast,” performed by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson won two awards: Best Pop Performance by a Group or Duo With Vocal, Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or for Television; composer Richard S. Kaufman took home the last Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.

February 3

February 3, 1993 – The First Half of The Best of Disney Music: A Legacy in Song Premieres on CBS

“Tonight we celebrate sixty years of Disney music.”

On February 3, 1993, part one of the special The Best of Disney Music: A Legacy in Song premiered on CBS. The special honored Disney music, ranging from the studio’s humble beginnings to the smash hits of the Disney Renaissance period. The special featured several guest stars and rolls of archival footage, with Angela Lansbury hosting the first half. The second half premiered on May 21, 1993, with Glenn Close hosting the second. The special was directed by Don Mischer.

January 29, 2008 – The Soundtrack to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is Released

“Got a whale of a tale to tell you lads, a whale of a tale or two…”

On January 29, 2008, the digital version of the soundtrack for the live-action feature film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was released through Walt Disney Records. Although two vinyl records were released (one in 1954, the second in 1963 around the film’s re-release), these two records were more like story records rather than a soundtrack; this digital album is the first time the score of the film by Paul J. Smith was released. The soundtrack is 26 tracks long, along with several single versions of the film’s song “Whale of a Tale,” sung by actor Kirk Douglas.

January 27, 2004 – The Compilation Album Disneymania 2 is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On January 27, 2004, the second compilation album in the Disneymania series, entitled Disneymania 2, was released through Walt Disney Records. The album, like its predecessor, features pop covers of classic Disney favorites. Artists featured were Disney Channel star Hilary Duff, indie band They Might Be Giants, and the musical group Disney Channel Circle of Stars, which were Disney Channel stars gathered for the purpose of singing Disney covers. Several of the songs were used to promote Disney movies released on DVD or soundtracks for feature films. The album was successful, reaching a peak of 29 on the Billboard 200 chart and being certified gold by the RIAA.

January 25, 2005 – The Soundtrack to Mulan II is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On January 25, 2005, the soundtrack to the direct-to-video animated feature Mulan II was released through Walt Disney Records. The soundtrack features the vocals of Lea Salonga, Judy Kuhn, Beth Blankenship, Mandy Gonzales, Gedde Watanabe, Jerry Tondo, and Harvey Fierstein; Salonga, Watanabe, Tondo, and Fierstein reprised their roles from the original Mulan. The soundtrack also features two additional songs: “Here Beside Me” by Hayley Westenra, and “(I Wanna Be) Like Other Girls” by British pop girl group Atomic Kitten.

January 21, 1995 – The Lion King is Awarded Best Musical or Comedy Film at the Golden Globes

On January 21, 1995, the 52nd Golden Globe Awards were held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Honored with four nominations, including two in the same category for Best Original Song, the animated feature film The Lion King won three awards, including the award for the Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, beating out The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; Ed Wood; Four Weddings and a Funeral; and Prêt-à-Porter. Hans Zimmer wn for his score for the film, while Elton John and Tim Rice managed to take home the honor of Best Original Song with “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.”

December 29, 2006 – Donny Osmond Signs Autographs in Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom Park

“Please join the Walt Disney World Resort as we welcome legendary entertainer, Donny Osmond to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.”

On December 29, 2006, recording artist and actor Donny Osmond held an appearance and autograph session in the Animal Kingdom Park of Walt Disney World. Osmond is well known in Disney circles for providing the singing voice for the character Shang in the animated feature Mulan, as well as starring as Gaston in the Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast; moreover, he is also known for being discovered, alongside his brother, by Walt Disney himself and performing at Disneyland. Osmond was on hand to sign copies of the Mulan soundtrack, memorabilia from the early days of his career, and copies of his recent album What I Meant to Say, his 54th studio album.

December 12, 2005 – The Cheetah Girls Song “Five More Days ‘til Christmas” Premieres on Radio Disney

“There’s only five more days ‘til Christmas, you know that I can hardly wait.”

On December 12, 2005, the second single of the Cheetah Girls’ first album and only holiday album Cheetah-licious Christmas, “Five More Days ‘til Christmas,” premiered on Radio Disney. Although officially recognized as their second single, and performed as such on the group’s tour, the single was never released as a digital download.

December 4, 2007 – The Pirates of the Caribbean Soundtrack Treasures Collection is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On December 4, 2007, the Pirates of the Caribbean Soundtrack Treasures Collection box set was released through Walt Disney Records. The box set contained four CDs, featuring the three soundtracks for the films, along with a fourth CD featuring remixes and unreleased cues and pieces; it also contains some of the earliest demos created by Hans Zimmer in the early stages of production. The set also includes a DVD with special behind-the-scenes extras and interviews with composer Hans Zimmer.

November 4, 2006 – The Disney: The Music Behind the Magic Opens at the Experience the Music Project

On November 4, 2006, the new exhibit Disney: The Music Behind the Magic opened in Seattle’s Experience the Music Project. The exhibit, also honoring Walt Disney Records’ 50th anniversary, began in the 1930s with original scores and storyboards for the earliest Disney films, to the multitude of pop stars that have had hits through the label. The event also featured interactive elements for kids, including their own way of mixing vocals and creating sound effects. For adults, there were clips with explanations by musical experts, as well as pieces of important Disney milestones for all to see. The event ran until September 9, 2007.
