January 30, 1934 – Executive Vice President for Disney Parks and Disney Legend Bob Matheison is Born

On January 30, 1934, Bob Matheison was born in Portland, Oregon. He graduated from USC in 1955, majoring in telecommunications, and joined the Army after graduation. He worked at Fort Hood as the chief of the radio-television branch, which kicked off his career in radio broadcasting. In 1960, Matheison scored a job at Disney through a college friend, and became the sound coordinator for Disneyland; he soon worked his way up to become the manager of Guest Relations, assisting production of broadcasts from the park. In 1965, Walt Disney personally tapped Matheison to work with several attractions set to premiere at the 1965 World’s Fair; he would manage the it’s a small world attraction, along with supervising the technical staff for Magic Skyway, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, and the Carousel of Progress. In 1966, Matheison was named the head of the research and development team for the Florida Project (which would eventually become Walt Disney World). While working on this project, he also developed an extensive 13- week training program for executives of the park, which was the forerunner of the Disney Institute corporate training program. In 1969, he was named the director of operations for Disneyland, and took the title to Walt Disney World a year later when sent to set up the new parks operating plan. In 1972, Matheison was promoted to the vice president of operations; in 1984 he was promoted to vice president of Magic Kingdom and EPCOT; in 1987, he reached the position of executive vice president of Walt Disney World. In 1994, after 34 years with the company, Matheison retired. He was honored as a Disney Legend in 1996 for the many hats he wore during his tenure at Disney.

January 28, 2009 – The Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure Opens in Epcot

On January 28, 2009, the interactive attraction Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure opened in Epcot’s World Showcase. Based on the hit Disney Channel animated series Kim Possible, the experience gave guests a chance to become secret agents throughout Epcot, solving cases through the help of a special communication device known as a Kimmunicator. Seven pavilions, each with a different mission, were available for exploring, with each quest taking about an hour to complete. The interactive attraction closed on May 17, 2012, and was replaced by Agent P’s World Showcase Adventure on July 6, 2012.

January 20

January 20 2014 – The Restaurant Spice Road Table Opens in Epcot

On January 20, 2014, the Spice Road Table Restaurant officially opened in Epcot’s Morocco Pavilion in the World Showcase. The restaurant, located on the lagoon side, was inspired by authentic outdoor cafes, and provides guests a prime seat for the IllumiNations fireworks show. The Mediterranean fare includes tapas and specialties, including spicy garlic shrimp and chicken skewers. While not originally accepting the Disney Dining Plan, most plans are now accepted at the restaurant.

January 18, 1997 – Carnival Castle is Unveiled at Disneyland Paris

On January 18, 1997, to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Disneyland Paris, Carnival Castle was unveiled. The castle, which is a temporary redesign of the Sleeping Beauty Castle, was styled not only to celebrate the park’s anniversary, but to promote the current Disney animated feature The Hunchback of Notre Dame, based on the book by French author Victor Hugo. The redesign gave the castle itself a variety of jester hats, while Central Plaza was decorated with gargoyles and renamed Gargoyle Square, and Main Street USA was covered in banners.

January 16

January 16, 2011 – The Pixar Pals Countdown to Fun! Parade Premieres in Hollywood Studios

On January 16, 2011, the Pixar Pals Countdown to Fun! parade began its run in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios park. The parade was a considerably shorter version of the previous Block Party Bash Parade, with the run time lasting only about ten minutes. It featured characters from The Incredibles, A Bug’s Life, Ratatouille, Monsters Inc., Up, and Toy Story.The parade was unable to keep guest interest, and was retired on April 6, 2013.

January 14, 2013 – The Winter Wonderland Event Begins in Epcot

“The forecast at Epcot this week is sunny with a chance of flurries.”

On January 14, 2013, Disney continued its Limited Time Magic promotion with the addition of “Winter Wonderland,” where they made it snow over the Canada Pavilion in Epcot’s World Showcase. Guests were able to meet with special characters, including Chip ‘n’ Dale, Donald, and Daisy while snow would fall all around the pavilion area. The event lasted until January 20th.

January 12

January 12, 2001 – Downtown Disney Opens in Disneyland

On January 12, 2001, the California version of the shopping district Downtown Disney opened in Disneyland. The area, situated between Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure, features a variety of shops, entertainment, and dining options, ranging from a movie theater to fine dining table service restaurants. The district also features the largest Disney shopping experience in the parks: World of Disney; Marceline’s Confectionary is another favorite Disney shopping treat, where guests can purchase special Disney-themed treats, including the famous candy apples decorated for the season.

January 8, 1996 – The Fairy Tale Festival Begins in Disneyland Paris

On January 8, 1996, the Fairy Tale Festival began in Disneyland Paris. This seasonal festival celebrated famous European fairy tale authors and their creations, and included such features as a giant gingerbread house, a pumpkin that magically turned into Cinderella’s carriage, and a parade featuring “new” fairy tales in the Disney animated films cannon, including The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. The event lasted until April 4, 1996.

January 2, 2001 – The First Guests are Welcomed to the Grand Californian Hotel

On January 2, 2001, the first paying guests were invited in to the newly opened Grand Californian Hotel. The hotel, located in the Disney California Adventure park, is the first Disney hotel to be located within a park. The design celebrates the simplicity of California’s coastline, featuring tributes to Arroyo craftsman, mission pioneers, and California-centric architecture. The hotel has 712 standard-size rooms, 34 suites, 2 vice-presidential, and 2 presidential suites; it also features the Napa Rose restaurant, which features several award-winning wines.

December 29, 2006 – Donny Osmond Signs Autographs in Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom Park

On December 29, 2006, recording artist and actor Donny Osmond held an appearance and autograph session in the Animal Kingdom Park of Walt Disney World. Osmond is well known in Disney circles for providing the singing voice for the character Shang in the animated feature Mulan, as well as starring as Gaston in the Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast; moreover, he is also known for being discovered, alongside his brother, by Walt Disney himself and performing at Disneyland. Osmond was on hand to sign copies of the Mulan soundtrack, memorabilia from the early days of his career, and copies of his recent album What I Meant to Say, his 54th studio album.
