September 13

September 13, 1959 – The Rainbow Mountain Stage Coaches Attraction Closes

On September 13, 1959, after only about four years of operation, the Rainbow Mountain Stage Coach attraction was officially closed. The attraction first opened in 1955 as the Stage Coaches, and was reopened as Rainbow Mountain Stage Coaches on June 26, 1956. Guests boarded a stagecoach and traveled around Frontierland, particularly through the Living Desert and other updates to the area. Unfortunately, the attraction was forced to close due to the horses continually getting spooked by the Disneyland Railroad rolling by.

September 12, 2005 – The Hong Kong Disneyland Railroad Opens

“Depart from turn-of-the-century America onboard a vintage locomotive for a scenic tour of Hong Kong Disneyland Park.”

On September 12, 2005, the Hong Kong Disneyland Railroad opened, with stations located in Fantasyland and Main Street, USA. The railroad is a mainstay of Disney Parks, going back to Walt Disney’s passion for model trains, as well as the original Disneyland Railroad. Hong Kong Disneyland features three locomotives named after important figures in Disney Company history: Walter E. Disney, Roy O. Disney, and Frank G. Wells.

September 9, 2001 – The Country Bear Jamboree Closes in Disneyland

“The Wildest Show in the Wilderness”

On September 9, 2001, the long-running attraction Country Bear Jamboree closed in Disneyland’s Critter Country. Opening on March 24, 1972, and originally located in Bear Country, the Disneyland attraction was based on the original Walt Disney World attraction; the attraction was originally designed to be a show for the proposed Mineral King Ski Resort that was planned by Walt Disney in the 1960s. The attraction was closed to make way for the new Winnie the Pooh themed attraction, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. While open in Disneyland, there were many special-themed versions of the attraction that featured new sets and costumes, including the Country Bear Christmas Special, as well as the Country Bear Vacation Hoedown

September 1, 2000 – The Attraction Pooh’s Hunny Hunt Opened in Tokyo Disneyland

気まぐれに進むハニーポット(はちみつの壷)にのって、プーさんといっしょにはちみつ探しの冒険に出発!”

On September 1, 2000, the attraction Pooh’s Hunny Hunt opened in the Fantasyland area of Tokyo Disneyland. The attraction is similar to the Walt Disney World attraction The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, where guests board a large honey pot and travel through the storybook of Winnie the Pooh and entering the scenes from the classic animated feature; however, the Tokyo Disneyland attraction is much more elaborate than the Walt Disney World attraction.

August 16

August 16, 1958 – The Main Street Fire Truck Begins Operating in Disneyland

“Travel back in time during a breezy, one-way drive down Main Street, U.S.A. in a charming turn-of-the-century vehicle.”

On August 16, 1958, the Main Street Fire Truck began running in Disneyland. Based on the first fire engines that operated at the turn-of-the-century, guests are able to ride down Main Street and travel all the way to the front of Sleeping Beauty Castle. Versions of the Fire Truck have also been added to Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World (added on October 1, 1971), World Bazaar in Tokyo Disneyland (added on April 15, 1983), and Main Street of Disneyland Paris (added April 12, 1992).

August 14

August 14, 1958 – The Grand Opening of the Alice in Wonderland Attraction is Held

“Don’t be late, your adventure awaits.”

On August 14, 1958, two months after the opening of the attraction, the Grand Opening Ceremony for the Alice in Wonderland dark ride was held in Disneyland. The ceremony was a grand affair, featuring Walt Disney himself riding down Main Street in a horse-drawn carriage with Mouseketeer Karen Pendleton, who was selected by Walt to play Alice for the day. Joined by Mickey and Minnie Mouse, as well as the White Rabbit, Karen was given the key to the attraction by Walt.

August 13, 2017 – The Great Movie Ride Attraction Closes

“A spectacular journey into the movies.”

On August 13, 2017, the Hollywood Studios attraction The Great Movie Ride officially closed. Open since May 1, 1989, the attraction was a ride-through tour that brought guests to the movies allowing them to venture into the scenes of some of the world’s most beloved films, including Alien, Mary Poppins, and Casablanca. The attraction was sponsored by Turner Classic Movies starting in 2014, featuring host and film historian Robert Osborne as the narrator through the films. The closing of this attraction makes it the final attraction from Hollywood Studios’ opening day to close.

July 22

July 22, 1989 – The Display Disneyland Presents a Preview of Coming Attractions Closes

On July 22, 1989, the Main Street display Disneyland Presents a Preview of Coming Attractions permanently closed. Originally opening in 1973, the display showed proposed and planned attractions for the California theme park, complete with artists’ renderings, notes, and models by the Imagineers. This display took the place of the Legacy of Walt Disney area, as most of the items from that attraction were moved to the Walt Disney Story area. After Preview of Coming Attractions closed, it was replace by the Disneyland Showcase, a shop that, as of 2018, still stands on Main Street.

July 7, 2006 – The Pirates of the Caribbean Attraction Reopens

“Drink up me hearties, yo ho.”

On July 7, 2006, the popular attraction Pirates of the Caribbean reopened after an extensive refurbishment that added an audio-animatronic figures of the character Jack Sparrow from the franchise of the same name. The reopening of the attraction coincided with the release of the second film in the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. Jack Sparrow appears in a few scenes within the attraction, including hiding behind a dressmaker’s dummy, peering out of a barrel, and celebrating his good fortune after finding and collecting treasure.

July 6, 1994 – The Captain EO Attraction Closes

“We are here to change the world.”

On July 6, 1994, the 3D musical film attraction Captain EO closed in Walt Disney World’s Epcot Park. Opening on September 12, 1986, the attraction featured pop star Michael Jackson in a science fiction musical adventure, with Jackson playing the titular role and fighting against the Supreme Leader (played by Anjelica Huston) and her army of darkness. The film was popular enough to become an attraction in the other Disney Parks, including Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Disneyland. The last version of the attraction was officially closed in 1998; after Jackson’s death in 2009, the attraction was brought back to the parks for a limited time.
