January 26, 1994 – The Disneyland Attraction Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin Opens

“Steer and spin a runaway taxicab through the wacky streets of Toontown as you follow the adventures of Roger Rabbit.”

On January 26, 1994, the Mickey’s Toontown attraction Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin opened. It is notable for being the first dark ride to be built at Disneyland in about ten years. Based on the film Who Killed Roger Rabbit?, guests are taken through the streets of Toontown while riding in Lenny the Taxicab, exploring a back alley while working to avoid the toxic concoction Dip being poured by the villainous weasels. Guests have the ability to steer their cab a full 360 degrees so they can gain control through the ride, even riding the attraction backwards if they would like. The attraction features 17 Audio-Animatronic characters, 59 props, and 20 special effects. A version of this attraction was opened in Tokyo Disneyland on April 15, 1996.

January 23, 2006 – The Attraction Monsters Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! Has Its Grand Opening

“A child is loose in Monstropolis and must be apprehended!”

On January 23, 2006, the Disneyland’s California Adventure attraction Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! had its grand opening, although it had been open since December of 2005. Based on the hit 2001 Pixar film, guests are taken through downtown Monstropolis to tour the factory when they hear that a child is on the loose in the city. Guests are able to live the adventure alongside Mike and Sulley as they try to rescue Boo and bring her back to the human world. The attraction replaced Superstar Limo, which closed on January 11, 2002, and only being open for less than a year.

January 15, 1975 – The General Electric Carousel of Progress Attraction Opens in Walt Disney World

“There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow, just a dream away!”

On January 15, 1975, the General Electric Carousel of Progress attraction opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom park, located in Tomorrowland. Based on the original 1964-65 New York World’s Fair attraction, the attraction closed in Disneyland on September 9, 1973 and was moved to Walt Disney World. It greatly changed when it moved to Florida, with one significant change being the theme song of the attraction changing from “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” to “The Best Time of Your Life,” which was a reflection of the new philosophy of General Electric. Although General Electric ended their sponsorship with the attraction in 1985, the attraction was kept open and still continues to operate. In 1993, the attraction underwent a rehabilitation, which brought back the original theme song, and also added a specific holiday to each of the four segments. In 1994, it was renamed Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress.

January 7, 1992 – The Attraction Voyage of the Little Mermaid Opens in Disney-MGM Studios

“Celebrate highlights of the animated musical film, The Little Mermaid, at this 15-minute puppetry extravaganza!”

On January 7, 1992, the Voyage of the Little Mermaid attraction opened at Walt Disney World’s Disney-MGM Studios near the Animation Courtyard. It replaced the show Here Come the Muppets, and is a special multimedia show with animation, live performances, puppetry, and other special effects to give guests an immersive experience. The show is a summation of the key parts of the 1989 film The Little Mermaid, with select songs being performed by the live-action performers and puppeteers.

December 24, 1971 – The Flight to the Moon Attraction Opens in Walt Disney World’s Tomorrowland

“Our Flight to the Moon takes place sometime in the future, when travel to outer space will be an everyday adventure.”

On December 24, 1971, the Tomorrowland attraction Flight to the Moon opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom park. The attraction was based on the original Disneyland attraction, which opened in 1967. After men had already been to the moon, the attraction lost popularity due to it being dated, and was closed on April 15, 1975. The attraction was then replaced with Mission to Mars, which opened on June 7, 1975.

December 23, 1998 – La Théâtre for Cirque du Soleil Opens in Downtown Disney

“Be mesmerized by this extraordinary avant-garde spectacle as it makes the impossible, possible!”

On December 23, 1998, La Théâtre, the custom-built theater for Cirque du Soleil opened in west side of Walt Disney World’s Downtown Disney area. This theater was built to showcase the La Nouba show, which is still being performed to this day. The outside of the theater was built to resemble a white circus tent; the inside of the theater has a mechanical stage with several movable parts, including platforms and movable glass cages. The show La Nouba (translated means “the party”) has more than 65 performers from 15 countries creating a dreamlike atmosphere for the audience.

December 15, 1973 – The Pirates of the Caribbean Attraction Opens in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

“Set sail on a swashbuckling voyage to a long-forgotten time and place when pirates and privateers ruled the seas.”

On December 15, 1973, the Walt Disney World version of the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction opened, thanks to its popularity in the original Disneyland park. The attraction is mostly similar to the original Disneyland attraction, although there has been some modification during the 2006 alterations, which included elements from the hit Pirates of the Caribbean film series. Guests enter a world of pirates, entering sites like the Pirates Grotto, the Fort, Town Square, the Burning City, and the Dungeon. The attraction is still one of the most popular attractions in all of Walt Disney World.

December 6, 2012 – Be Our Guest Restaurant Opens

“Step inside the Beast’s enchanted castle for a delicious quick-service lunch or a delightful sit-down dinner.”

On December 6, 2012, the highly anticipated Be Our Guest Restaurant opened in the New Fantasyland expansion of the Magic Kingdom of Walt Disney World. It is located underneath the Beast’s castle in the “countryside” section of the expansion. Guests have the option of a quick-service lunch, or a sit-down dinner. For lunch, guests order their food via a touch-screen terminal. There are also three different rooms to dine in: the Ballroom, the Library, or the West Wing. Be Our Guest is also the first restaurant in the Magic Kingdom to serve beer and wine, and the menu features several French-inspired dishes, including Chicken Breast Provencal and a Ratatouille. Another special treat for guests is the dessert “The Grey Stuff,” calling out to a line in the song that gives the restaurant its name.

November 21, 1994 – The Timekeeper Attraction Opens in Walt Disney World’s Tomorrowland

“It worked! And they laughed at me back at university! Maybe it was because of the tutu.”

On November 21, 1994, the Tomorrowland attraction The Timekeeper opened in the Magic Kingdom of Walt Disney World. It was adapted from the Disneyland Paris attraction Un Voyage à Travers le Temps, and used the Circle-Vision 360° film technique, along with Audio-Animatronics, to tell a narrative. Guests would wait in the lobby and meet the invention known as 9-Eye (voiced by Rhea Perlman). Guests would then enter the theater and meet the Timekeeper (voiced by Robin Williams), an inventor who created a time machine. He then sends 9-Eye back in time to record her experiences in important times of the past. The attraction became a seasonal attraction on April 29, 2001, closing for good on February 26, 2006.

November 8, 1980 – The Attraction Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Officially Opens in Walt Disney World

“Dash in and out of desert caverns and rumble through a haunted mine aboard a speeding train.”

On November 8, 1980, the attraction Big Thunder Mountain Railroad had its official opening at Walt Disney World’s Frontierland. The attraction had already been in operation since September, and was based on the original attraction in Disneyland. Imagineer Tony Baxter, who designed the original attraction, based it on the scenery he observed in Utah’s Bryce Canyon National Park; the Walt Disney World version was based on Monument Valley, and is 25% larger than the original version. The attraction has become highly popular with guests, and has since been replicated in Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris.
