November 18

November 18, 1962 – The Swiss Family Treehouse Attraction Opens in Disneyland

On November 18, 1962, the Swiss Family Treehouse attraction opened in Disneyland’s Adventureland. Based on the 1960 live action feature Swiss Family Robinson, the treehouse is entirely man-made, tree included. Thanks to this, the tree has also been given the tongue-in-cheek scientific name Disneyeodendron semperflorens grandis, meaning “large ever-blooming Disney tree.” The grand opening of the attraction featured an appearance by actor John Mills, who starred in the film, and his daughter, Disney Legend Hayley Mills. In 1999, the attraction closed, and soon reopened as Tarzan’s Treehouse. A version of the original attraction exists in Walt Disney World, opening in 1971, while another opened in Tokyo Disneyland in 1993.

November 16, 2004 – The Turtle Talk with Crush Attraction Opens in Epcot’s The Living Seas Area

On November 16, 2004, the Turtle Talk with Crush attraction opened in The Living Seas area of Epcot. Based on the hit Pixar film Finding Nemo, the attraction features the character Crush, the 150-year-old turtle from the EAC. Through digital projection and voice-activated animation, Crush is able to hold a conversation with members of the audience. The attraction proved popular enough to be brought to Disney’s California Adventure in 2005, and Tokyo DisneySea in 2009.

November 11, 1993 – Disney Announces Plans for Disney America

“In ‘Disney America’ we will create a totally new concept using the different strengths of our entertainment company…to celebrate those unique American qualities that have been out country’s strengths and that have made this nation the beacon of hope to people everywhere.”

On November 11, 1993, Disney released a press release for the new Disney America project, which was to be located west of Washington DC in Prince William County. Disney had purchased a 3,000 acre site in the county, and announced that the park would be very different from its predecessors in terms of subject matter and presentation, as the focus would be on several different aspects of the country’s history. It was also announced that it would be home to several facilities dedicated to public forums and political debates. Highlights included Native America, which would explore the lives of “America’s first inhabitants;” Civil War Fort, which puts guests in the middle of a reenactment of the battle of the Monitor and Merrimac, and We the People, an area to explore the lives and cultures brought to America through Ellis Island. Over 3,000 jobs would have been created once the park was finished, and was estimated to open in 1998. However, due to several protests by citizens thanks to its location near several Civil War battlefields, the project was scrapped in 1994.

November 2, 1963 – Julie Andrews Performs at a Special Promotional Event at the Golden Horseshoe in Disneyland

On November 2, 1963, Julie Andrews and the Dapper Dans joined the cast of the Golden Horseshoe for a special press-only promotional event for Mary Poppins, which would open the following year. Among the songs performed by the cast, Andrews and Wally Boag performed the standard “By The Light of the Silvery Moon.” This was not the first time that Andrews and Boag had shared the stage, as Andrews was a plant in the audience for Boag’s stage act in London.

October 26, 2009 –Tiana’s Showboat Jubilee Premieres at Walt Disney World

On October 26, 2009, Tiana’s Showboat Jubilee premiered at Walt Disney World. The celebration was the first of its kind celebrating the 9th official Disney princess from The Princess and the Frog, and combined a parade in Liberty Square, followed by a showboat ride with a live jazz band. A similar celebration opened in Disneyland on November 6. The celebration lasted ten weeks, along with other surprises to celebrate the film, and the celebration ended on January 3, 2010.

October 9, 2003 – The Dedication for the Epcot Attraction Mission: SPACE Takes Place

On October 9, 2003, the dedication for the Epcot attraction Mission: SPACE took place with a special ceremony. The attraction, which had a soft opening in June of that year, was a collaboration between Disney and NASA five years in the making. The opening included appearances by astronauts from several notable missions, NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe, and CEO Michael Eisner, among others.

October 6

October 6, 2014 – Memento Mori Opens in Walt Disney World

On October 6, 2014, the Haunted Mansion themed store Memento Mori opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. The store, located in Liberty Square, features special merchandise created to celebrate one of the park’s most popular attractions, including Dooney and Bourke purses, open edition pins, and special “spirit photography” that allows guests to transform into spirits that similar to the other 999 happy haunts.

October 3, 1971 – The Peter Pan’s Flight Attraction Opens in Walt Disney World

On October 3, 1971, the Fantasyland attraction Peter Pan’s Flight opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. Similar to the attraction of the same name that opened in Disneyland in 1955, the attraction is based on the 1953 animated feature film Peter Pan, and takes guests on flying pirate ships to join Peter, Tinker Bell, Wendy, John, and Michael in their adventures in Never Land. The attraction is highly popular, and in 2014 a new themed queue was designed to entertain guests during their wait.

September 23, 1980 – The Frontierland Attraction Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Opens in Walt Disney World

On September 23, 1980, the Frontierland attraction Big Thunder Mountain Railroad opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom park. It was based on the original Disneyland attraction, which opened on September 2, 1979. Unlike the Disneyland version, the Walt Disney World attraction is based on the scenery found in Monument Valley, Utah. The attraction also adds a “haunted” element to the attraction, with a backstory claiming that a supernatural force was awakened when gold was discovered on the mountain in the 1850s.

September 14, 2001 – The Attraction Who Wants to Be a Millionaire – Play It Opens in Disney’s California Adventure

On September 14, 2001, the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire – Play It interactive attraction opened in Disney’s California Adventure (DCA) park. Based on the hit ABC game show hosted by Regis Philbin, contestants would play at certain intervals, competing for points that could be redeemed for prizes, including the grand prize of a Disney Cruise Line vacation for four. The DCA attraction was similar to the Walt Disney World, which opened on April 7, 2001. A Fastpass was available for the attraction throughout its run, until it closed on August 20, 2004.
