October 13

October 13, 2008 – The Sun Wheel Attraction Closes

“Hop inside a roomy gondola for a breeze, 9-minute jaunt above Paradise Bay.”

On October 13, 2008, the Ferris wheel thrill attraction Sun Wheel closed at Paradise Pier. The ride was designed to fit Disney California Adventure’s theme of the boardwalks in California around the turn of the century, but when the park went through an overhaul in 2008, it was deemed that this ride would be one of those to change. Although the swinging gondola aspect of the ride did not change, what did was the design, replacing the giant sun face on the wheel with a picture of Mickey Mouse.

October 7

October 7, 2002 – The Area Flik’s Fun Fair Opens in Disney California Adventure

“Hop inside a discarded food carton for a gentle flight above Flik’s Fun Fair.”

On October 7, 2002, Flik’s Fun Fair opened in A Bug’s Land area of Disney California Adventure. Based on the Pixar animated feature A Bug’s Life, the area features attractions suited for younger guests. Guests are “shrunk down” to the size of a bug after going through a fallen cereal box, and can experience attractions based on particular attributes of characters, such as the inventive nature of main character Flik. The attraction includes Flik’s Flyers, Tuck & Roll’s Drive ‘Em Buggies, Heimlick’s Chew Chew Train, Francis’s Ladybug Boogie, and Princess Dot Puddle Park.

October 6

October 6, 2006 – The Princess Fantasy Faire Opens in Disneyland

“Where happily ever after happens every day!”

On October 6, 2006, the Princess Fantasy Faire opened in Disneyland’s Fantasyland Theater. The attraction replaced Snow White – An Enchanting Musical, and featured several Disney princesses, such as Belle, Aurora, and Mulan. The area provided guests with a chance to meet the Disney princesses, and was located right next to Sleeping Beauty’s castle. Guests were also able to participate in an interactive storytelling experience with a princess, and learn how to be a true princess or a knight in a coronation ceremony. The area closed on August 12, 2012.

October 4

October 4, 1993 – The Walt Disney World Mission to Mars Attraction Closes

On October 4, 1993, the Walt Disney World version of the Mission to Mars attraction closed. The ride was based on the attraction of the same name in Disneyland, which was a replacement of the Flight to the Moon attraction. Once man had actually been to the moon, the Flight to the Mon ride seemed dated, and an update was necessary to keep guests’ attention. The Walt Disney World attraction, located in Tomorrowland of Magic Kingdom Park, lasted a year longer than the original attraction, which closed on November 2, 1992.

September 29, 1991 – The Studio Showcase Attraction Opens in Disney-MGM Studios

On September 29, 1991, the Studio Showcase walkthrough attraction opened in Disney-MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios) Park in Walt Disney World. Hosted by the American Film Institute, the attraction gave guests a chance to see a variety of exhibits that featured costumes and props from famous films after going through the Studio Backlot Tour Guests also could buy items from a gift shop in the same location. The attraction closed on August 16, 2014.

September 28

September 28, 1996 – The Grand Prix Raceway Reopens as Tomorrowland Speedway

“Put the pedal to the metal in your very own hotrod and cruise along a scenic miniature motorway.”

On September 28, 1996, the Tomorrowland Speedway reopened with its new name in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. Originally known as the Grand Prix Raceway, this new name would only last for three years, until it was renamed as the Tomorrowland Indy Speedway in 1999; the name has since been changed back to Tomorrowland Speedway. The attraction was still the same, with guests able to race in a gas-powered racecar down the scenic motorway.

September 20

September 20, 1986 – The Television Special Disney’s Captain EO Grand Opening Premieres on NBC

“Now, join a galaxy of stars and celebrities as they gather in Disneyland for Disney’s Captain EO Grand Opening!”

On September 20, 1986, the television special Disney’s Captain EO Grand Opening premiered on NBC. It celebrated the new 3D musical attraction featuring Michael Jackson (which opened September 12, 1986), and featured Patrick Duffy and Justine Bateman as hosts. The special also featured performances by Belinda Carlisle, the Moody Blues, Robert Palmer, and Starship.

The special opens with a parade down Main Street before switching to the commentary by Bateman and Duffy, introducing many celebrities that were in attendance for the world premiere of Captain EO, including producer of the film George Lucas. The show then switches to a behind-the-scenes look of the film, along with an introduction of the characters in the film, including the villain played by Academy Award winning actress Anjelica Huston. The show also shows the complex choreography needed for the film, as it was a musical adventure experience.

September 9

September 9, 1973 – The Attraction General Electric Carousel of Progress Closes in Disneyland

“There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow, just a dream away.”

On September 9, 1973, the Tomorrowland attraction General Electric Carousel of Progress closed in Disneyland, preparing for a move to the new Walt Disney World Park in Orlando, Florida. The attraction, originally operating as a marketing attraction for General Electric at the 1964-1965 New York’s World’s Fair, had operated in Disneyland since the summer of 1967, and was replaced by another Audio-Animatronic show called America Sings. The area it once occupied is now inhabited by the Tomorrowland Expo Center, which features the Star Wars Launch Bay and the Super Hero HQ, while the Carousel of Progress attraction still operates in Walt Disney World.

August 21

August 21, 1995 – The PeopleMover Attraction Closes

“Ride tomorrow’s transportation…today!”

On August 21, 1995, the PeopleMover attraction in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland closed. Originally opening in 1967, and given major updates in 1977 and 1982 (with the latter promoting the movie Tron), the attraction was eventually closed as it seemed no longer an innovative attraction keeping with Tomorrowland’s theme of the future. A similar attraction was opened in Walt Disney World in 1975, originally called the WEDway PeopleMover (renamed to the Tomorrowland Transit Authority in 1994). The Disneyland attraction’s technology was replicated in the Houston International Airport for their PeopleMover.

August 17

August 17, 2010 – The Toy Story Playland Area Opens in Disneyland Paris

“Thanks to the creative minds of Pixar Studios and our Disney Imagineers, Guests of all ages can now feel what it’s like to be shrunk to the size of a toy and to become literally part of the Toy Story universe in Andy’s backyard.”

On August 17, 2010, the Toy Story Playland area opened in the Walt Disney Studios Park of Disneyland Paris. Based on the Toy Story franchise, the area contains three main attractions: Toy Story Parachute Drop, Slinky Dog Zigzag Spin, and RC Racer. These attractions give guests the impression that they have shrunk down to the size of a toy and are on adventures with Buzz and Woody. A similar area opened in Hong Kong Disneyland and is called Toy Story Land.
