March 6, 2013 – The First Renderings of Shanghai Disney Resort are Revealed at the Annual Company Meeting

On March 6, 2013, the annual Disney shareholders meeting was held in Phoenix, Arizona. Among other announcements, the first renderings of the Shanghai Disney Resort were unveiled by CEO Robert Iger. The park, then scheduled to open at the end of 2015, was a mix of Disney and Chinese stylings, a blend that would be spread over 950 acres, with two hotels, several square feet of retail, and several other entertainment areas.

March 2, 2014 – Frozen Wins Disney’s First Best Animated Feature Academy Award

On March 2, 2014, the 86th Academy Awards were held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California. The animated feature film Frozen won two Academy Awards: one for Best Original Song for “Let it Go” by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and one for Best Animated Feature. This was Disney Animation Studio’s first win in the category since it was established in 2001. Frozen won against The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Ernest & Celestine, and The Wind Rises.

February 27, 2011 – Toy Story 3 Wins Two Academy Awards

On February 27, 2011, the 83rd Academy Awards were held at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Pixar’s eleventh animated feature film Toy Story 3 was nominated in five categories, including Best Picture, making it the third animated feature in history to do so, and the second Pixar animated feature to be nominated in this category. The film would go on to win two awards: Best Animated Feature, beating out How to Train Your Dragon, and The Illusionist; and Best Original Song for Randy Newman’s “We Belong Together.”

February 26, 2012 – The Muppets’ “Man or Muppet” Wins Best Original Song Academy Award

On February 26, 2012, the 84th Academy Awards were held at the Hollywood and Highland Center Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. The song “Man or Muppet” from the 2011 live-action film The Muppets scored the win for Best Original Song, beating out the other nominee “Real in Rio” from the animated feature Rio. The song is the third Muppet song nominated for an Academy Award, with “Rainbow Connection” and “The First Time It Happens” being the other two; “Man or Muppet” is the first of these songs to win the Academy Award, and is the twelfth Best Original Song for the Disney Studios. The song was written by Bret McKenzie, known as half of the duo The Flying Conchords.

February 19, 2010 – An Endangered Western Lowland Gorilla is Born in Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom

“The newborn gorilla is going well and has already become an integral part of the gorilla family group that includes first-time mother, Kashata, father Gino, and two other females.”

On February 19, 2010, a baby gorilla was born to Western Lowland Gorilla Kashata in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park. This was Kashata’s first baby, and the third gorilla born in the Animal Kingdom. Disney is working in partnership with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, which helps protect and manage threatened or endangered species. The baby was eventually named Lilly to honor the late scientist and vice president of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, Dr. Alecia Lilly.

February 17, 2012 – The Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline Show Begins

“Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline opens for business today at Disney California Adventure park.”

On February 17, 2012, the new show Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline began in Disney’s California Adventure park in Condor Flats. The show uses song from the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s to create a retro-style show that can be enjoyed by old and young guests alike, featuring standards such as “Come Fly With Me,” “Straighten Up and Fly Right,” and “Lady of Spain.” There is also a second medley of songs featuring Disney songs that featuring flying, including “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” from Mary Poppins. The show also features a special talking and singing Minnie Mouse, appearing for the first time in Disneyland’s history. The show ended its run on October 20, 2013.

February 16, 2012 – The Newest Disney Cruise Line Ship, the Disney Fantasy, Sails on its Maiden Voyage

On February 16, 2012, the newest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, the Disney Fantasy, set sail from Germany on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. The ship sailed from Bremerhaven, Germany to New York for its christening ceremony. Only a year earlier, the keel was laid in Meyer Werft shipyard. Currently, the ship is used for cruises to the Caribbean.

February 12, 2010 – The Disney Cruise Line Exhibit Opens

“Starting today, another attraction is waiting for visitors to Meyer Werft.”

On February 12, 2010, the Disney Cruise Line exhibit opened in Meyer Werft’s newly built area of the Visitors Centre. Meyer Werft, one of the world’s leaders of building luxury passenger ships, started building Disney ships in 2007 when Disney awarded the company a shipbuilding contract. The exhibit gave guests an opportunity to see the covered building dock where the Disney Dream was being built. A two-and-a-half-hour tour and walkthrough was offered for special guests as well.

February 2, 2010 – An Endangered White-Cheeked Gibbon is Born in Disney’s Animal Kingdom

On February 2, 2010, the newest member of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, a white-cheeked gibbon, was born. The baby was the fourth gibbon born in the park, and was born to white-cheeked gibbon Melaka. The white-cheeked gibbon is an endangered species, and the birth was part of a survival effort by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, with which Disney’s Animal Kingdom is heavily involved. With gibbons producing offspring once every two to three years, it is important to protect this species from extinction.

January 31, 2015 – Disney Wins Twelve Awards at the 42nd Annie Awards

On January 31, 2015, the 42nd Annie Awards were held at the University of California, Los Angeles’s Royce Hall. Out of 38 nominations – many in the same category – Disney was awarded eleven awards, and one special achievement award for the Walt Disney Family Museum. Disney’s 54th animated feature Big Hero 6 was given 7 nominations, winning one for Animated Effects in an Animated Production. The short film Feast was awarded as the Best Animated Short Subject, while Gravity Falls was awarded as Best Animated TV/Broadcast Production for Children’s Audience. Disney Television Animation did very well at the awards, with Wander Over Yonder winning two and the Mickey Mouse short films winning six. The Walt Disney Family Museum won the Special Achievement Award for “recognizing the unique and significant impact on the art and industry of animation.”
