April 19, 2009 – Walt Disney World’s Space Mountain Attraction Closes for Refurbishment

“When renovation work finishes on the Space Mountain attraction at Walt Disney World Resort, it’ll be the same classic experience with a few new surprises.”

On April 19, 2009, the popular Walt Disney World attraction Space Mountain closed down for a much needed refurbishment. Although it was the first of all the Space Mountain attractions to be built, the Walt Disney World version’s rebuild was done after Disneyland Paris’ and Disneyland’s versions. Major changes to update the classic attraction included asteroid blasting games to play while in the queue, which extends the ride’s overall story to those waiting in line; the overall look of the attraction was updated to make it appear less dated and more 21st Century. The attraction was reopened to guests in November, 2009.

April 16, 2008 – Disney Theatrical Productions Honors Alan Menken

On April 16, 2008, Disney Theatrical Productions hosted an evening at the Hudson Theatre honoring the music and legacy of composer Alan Menken. Hosted by Thomas Schumacher, the evening featured Broadway performers Josh Strickland, Ashley Brown, Sierra Boggess, and Sherie Rene Scott; Donny Osmond, who played Gaston for a stint in Beauty and the Beast, also stopped by to liven the evening. Menken, who made his Broadway debut with Little Shop of Horrors with lyricist Howard Ashman, is better known for his work with Disney animated features beginning with The Little Mermaid; several of the animated features have made it to the Broadway stage. The evening focused in his lesser-known work, with the performers paying homage to a Broadway great.

April 11, 2008 –Disney Announces Philippe Gas as President of Euro Disney S.A.S

On April 11, 2008, an announcement was released that Philippe Gas was named to the top position of President of Euro Disney S.A.S, the management company and operator of Disneyland Paris. Gas was named to succeed Karl Holz, who was moving on to a new position as President of New Vacation Operations for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. Gas joined Disney in 1991 after completing his law degree from the University of Paris Assas, working as a finance controller and as part of the opening team of Disneyland Paris, then known as Euro Disney. After a promotion in 1997 to the Director of Corporate Compensation, Gas moved to the Walt Disney Company Headquarters in Burbank, California. He had another promotion in 2000 to the Regional Vice President of Human Resources for The Walt Disney Company Asia-Pacific, overseeing HR practices in 13 countries, including Japan and Hong Kong. He returned to Disneyland Paris in 2004 as Senior Vice President of Human Resources, and continued to climb the organization until he was named the Executive Vice President of Human Resources, Diversity & Inclusion for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts worldwide in 2006. Gas was scheduled to fully assume his new appointment as president on September 1, 2008.

April 10, 2003 – Disneyland’s Space Mountain Attraction Closes for Refurbishment

“Journey throughout the cosmos to the furthest reaches of the galaxy and back!”

On April 10, 2003, the Disneyland version of the popular thrill ride attraction Space Mountain closed for refurbishments. The attraction, along with most of Tomorrowland, had been repainted in 1998 to a new color scheme that included metal tones; the 2003 refurbishment was necessary to return Space Mountain’s exterior to its original white color, as well as to update some of the ride mechanics inside. The attraction was closed for a little over two years during this rebuild, opening once again on July 16, 2005.

April 9, 2005 – The Thrill Attraction Space Mountain: Mission 2 Opens in Disneyland Paris


On April 9, 2005, the thrill ride attraction Space Mountain: Mission Open officially opened in Disneyland Paris. The attraction originally opened as Space Mountain: De la Terre a la Lune on June 1, 1995, but was closed for a carefully timed refurbishment to coincide with the attraction’s tenth anniversary. It is the fourth version of the popular Space Mountain attraction, which had opened in Walt Disney World in 1975. The Disneyland Paris attraction has since been closed for another refurbishment giving it a new Star Wars theme, which is planned to open in May, 2017.

April 7, 2001 – The Interactive Attraction Who Wants to Be a Millionaire – Play It Opens in Disney-MGM Studios

“Where in the world can YOU get into the hot seat?”

On April 7, 2001, the interactive attraction Who Wants to Be a Millionaire – Play It opened in Disney-MGM Studios in Walt Disney World. Based on the hit ABC game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, hosted by Disney Legend Regis Philbin, contestants could compete to win points that could be redeemed for special prizes, including the top prize of a Disney Cruise Line vacation. The attraction proved popular enough to be replicated in Disney’s California Adventure, opening on September 14, 2001. The original version of the attraction lasted longer than the DCA version, with the Disney-MGM attraction closing on August 19, 2006.

March 27, 2007 – The Soundtrack for Meet the Robinsons is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“These little wonders, these twists and turns of fate.”

On March 27, 2007, the soundtrack for Disney’s 47th animated feature film Meet the Robinsons was released through Walt Disney Records. The soundtrack features popular artists The All-American Rejects, Rufus Wainwright, and Rob Thomas, the latter of which wrote the song “Little Wonders” which was featured during the film’s ending and credits. The band They Might Be Giants were also featured, singing a cover of the Disney Park attraction song “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” from the Carousel of Progress. March 26, 2000 – “You’ll Be in My Heart” Wins Academy Award

“You’ll be here in my heart, always.”

On March 26, 2000, the 72nd Academy Awards were held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. Recording artist Phil Collins managed to walk away with a win for Best Original Song for the song “You’ll Be in My Heart” from the Disney animated film Tarzan; this was the film’s only nomination and win. The song won against “Blame Canada” from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut; “Music of My Heart” from Music of the Heart; “Save Me” from Magnolia; and “When She Loved Me” from Toy Story 2.

March 22, 2005 – The Album Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“Classic instrumental love songs for your happily-ever-after”

On March 22, 2005, the instrumental album Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings was released through Walt Disney Records.  The album features instrumental versions of Disney favorites, including “Beauty and the Beast” and “Bella Notte,”along with less well known songs such as “Endless Night” from The Lion King musical and “Lavender Blue (Dilly Dilly)” from So Dear to My Heart.

March 19, 2008 – Disney Cruise Line Announces Agreement with Port Canaveral

“We’re thrilled that Disney has committed to stay here long-term and are looking forward to the two new ships home porting here.”- Port Canaveral CEO Stan Payne

On March 19, 2008, Disney Cruise Line officially announced that they reached an agreement with Port Canaveral in Florida, which extended their home port contract for fifteen more years. This agreement was officially ratified by the Port Authority Commissioners. The agreement included an expansion and modification of the existing port facility, including a parking structure scheduled to be completed in 2011. Disney stated in the press release that they were going to work with Port Canaveral staff to add the special Disney touch to the planned “state of the art facility.”
