February 25

February 25, 1991 – The Frontierland Shop Bearly Country Closes

On February 25, 1991, the store Bearly Country, located in Walt Disney World’s Frontierland in Magic Kingdom Park, closed. Open since June 6, 1985, the shop specialized in merchandise that featured the Country Bears from the Country Bear Jamboree. After closing in 1991, the store then became the Prairie Outpost Supply, and changed its wares to a more generic Southwestern theme.

February 16, 1991 – The Live Action Show Dick Tracy Starring in Diamond Double-Cross Closes

“Tess, you’re one in a million!”

On February 16, 1991, the live action show Dick Tracy Starring in Diamond Double-Cross held its final performance in Walt Disney World’s Disney-MGM Studios. Opening on May 21, 1990, the show was created to help promote the Touchstone Pictures live action feature film Dick Tracy, which was released on June 15, 1990. The show’s plot featured Breathless Mahoney wishing to acquire the Balonian Diamond. When the diamond is stolen by Big Boy Caprice’s henchmen, Dick Tracy is on the case after being interrupted when trying to propose to Tess Trueheart.

February 5, 1996 – Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe Opens in Walt Disney World

“Feel free to celebrate Christmas any day at this Liberty Square shop selling Disney ornaments, stockings, toys and more.”

On February 5, 1996, Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe opened in Walt Disney World’s Liberty Square in Magic Kingdom Park. The store replaced the Olde World Antiques and the Silversmith, and features Christmas and Hanukkah decorations and ornaments with the Disney touch. There is also a small Christmas tree that is decorated by a chosen guest once a day.

February 1

February 1, 1995 – The Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. Opens in Walt Disney World

On February 1, 1995, the Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. merchandise stop and arcade opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park, just at the exit of the popular Space Mountain attraction. The shop provides general merchandise, and was one of the first spots within Walt Disney World to provide personalized retail MagicBands, where guests could customize their MagicBands, or cell-phone cases with Disney-related designs.

January 30

January 30, 1995 – The Lion King Soundtrack Wins at American Music Awards

“And can you feel the love tonight? It is where we are, it’s enough for this wide-eyed wanderer that we got this far.”

On January 30, 1995, the 22nd American Music Awards (AMAs) were held, and were broadcast by ABC. The soundtrack for the animated feature film The Lion King was the winner for Favorite Pop/Rock Album, beating out nominees Mariah Carey (for Music Box) and Counting Crows (for August and Everything After.) It was the only nomination and win for the album at the AMAs, but was amongst its many accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best Musical Album for Children.

January 26

January 26, 1993 – Mickey’s Toontown Holds Opening Dedication Ceremony

“Now we’re happy that you found your way to Mickey’s Toontown, today!”

On January 26, 1993, the opening dedication for Mickey’s Toontown was held at Disneyland. Many celebrities were on hand to help celebrate the new section of the park, including Robin Williams, Danny DeVito, and George Lucas. Actor Harry Anderson served as Toontown’s honorary mayor, standing alongside Michael Eisner as they dedicated the new area.

January 24

January 24, 1993 – The Attraction Acorn Ball Crawl Opens in Disneyland’s Toontown

On January 24, 1993, the attraction Acorn Ball Crawl opened in Disneyland’s Toontown area. Located in Chip & Dale’s Treehouse, the attraction was essentially a giant ball pit filled with yellow and red rubber balls. The attraction was short lived, however, as it closed and was removed in early 1998.

January 23

January 23, 1992 – Bonnet Creek Golf Club Opens

On January 23, 1992, the Bonnet Creek Golf Club Opened in Walt Disney World. The club was designed by Pete Dye, and included at the time the Eagle Pines and Osprey Ridge courses. On February 1, 2005, the club was renamed Eagle Pines & Osprey Ridge Golf Club, to represent the two courses that make up the club. The club has been considered one of the top 100 golf courses in the state of Florida. In March 2007, Disney sold the golf club to Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.

January 15

January 15, 1999 – The World Premiere Food Court Opens in Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort

“Get the red-carpet treatment at this cinema-themed food court with 5 stations!”

On January 15, 1999, the World Premiere Food Court quick service station opened in Walt Disney World’s All-Star Movies Resort. Designed like a movie theater concessions stand, this quick service station provides guests with five separate stations for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night dining; dishes provided include pizza, burgers, and ice cream.

January 14

January 14, 1990 – The Person of the Century Event Kicks Off in Epcot

On January 14, 1990, a new experience called Person of the Century began running in Epcot’s CommuniCore West area. The idea was to give guests a chance to vote on who they believe was the most influential person of the century from a list of 89 nominees; some of these nominees include Winston Churchill, Mother Teresa, and of course, Walt Disney. The voting was supposed to last until January 1, 2000, but the voting was pulled from Epcot a little over a year after the machines were put in place. Rumor has it that the machines were pulled due to cast members tampering with the voting and making one of their own of the main nominees.
