January 24, 1993 – The Gag Factory – Toontown Five and Dime Shop Opens in Disneyland

On January 24, 1993, the merchandise store Gag Factory – Toontown Five & Dime opened in Disneyland’s Toontown area. It specializes in general park merchandise, including ear hats, autograph books, apparel, and snacks; it also provides a variety of seasonal souvenirs. The store is decorated to fit the “toon” theme of the park area, with the factory elements heightened to comedic proportions.

July 10, 1993 – The Television Special Disneyland Presents Tales of Toontown Premieres

On July 10, 1993, the television special Disneyland Presents Tales of Toontown premiered on television, distributed by Disney and ABC Domestic Television. The feature was used to promote the newest land in Disneyland, which opened on January 24, 1993. The hour-long special featured Jerry Hawkins as detective Spence Dempsey, who is brought to Toontown by his pal Goofy to discover the cause of the craziness occurring there. Written by Wayne A. Brown, Lisa Cappel, and Robin Mensinger, it starred Ray Johnson as the Gatekeeper, Steve Glaudini as the Toon Docotr, Dave Burkhart as the Planning Commissioner, Wayne Allwine as Mickey Mouse, Tony Anselmo as Donald Duck, and Bill Farmer as Goofy. It was directed by Bruce Stuart Greenberg.

January 26, 1993 – Mickey’s Toontown Holds Opening Dedication Ceremony

“Now we’re happy that you found your way to Mickey’s Toontown, today!”

On January 26, 1993, the opening dedication for Mickey’s Toontown was held at Disneyland. Many celebrities were on hand to help celebrate the new section of the park, including Robin Williams, Danny DeVito, and George Lucas. Actor Harry Anderson served as Toontown’s honorary mayor, standing alongside Michael Eisner as they dedicated the new area.

January 24, 1993 – The Attraction Acorn Ball Crawl Opens in Disneyland’s Toontown

On January 24, 1993, the attraction Acorn Ball Crawl opened in Disneyland’s Toontown area. Located in Chip & Dale’s Treehouse, the attraction was essentially a giant ball pit filled with yellow and red rubber balls. The attraction was short lived, however, as it closed and was removed in early 1998.
