May 11, 2017 – The Nighttime Fireworks Show Wishes: A Magical Gathering of Disney Dreams Ends

“Wishes, dream a dream; Wishes, set it free…”

On May 11, 2017, the nighttime fireworks show Wishes: A Magical Gathering of Disney Dreams ended its run at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. It was narrated by Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio. Replacing the Fantasy in the Sky in 2003, the show became popular with guests, with a variation of the show opening in Disneyland Paris on July 16, 2005. Special variations of the show were created to celebrate specific holidays, including Happy HalloWishes: A Grim Grinning Ghost Spooktacular in the Sky; Holiday Wishes: Celebrate the Spirit of the Season; and Fantasy in the Sky: New Year’s Eve Countdown. The show was replaced by the Happily Ever After nighttime spectacular, which focused heavily on projection mapping on Cinderella Castle.

May 5, 2005 – The Action Show Attraction Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show Opens

“Get ready for extreme thrills as this full-throttle, high-octane live stunt spectacular comes roaring in from Disneyland Resort Paris.”

On May 5, 2005, the stunt action show Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show opened in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios park. The show shows guests the behind-the-scenes of extreme stunts, such as physical stunts and car chases through dangerous settings. The Hollywood Studios attraction was based on the show Moteurs…Action! Stunt Show Spectacular from Disneyland Paris. The Hollywood Studios attraction was closed on April 2, 2016, to make way for the new expansion areas of the park.

May 3, 1997 – The Restaurant Ariel’s Closes

“For a storybook celebration in your own underwater realm, this themed event space at Disney’s Beach Club Resort offers the perfect blend of casual elegance and fish-tale fantasy.”

On May 3, 1997, the themed restaurant Ariel’s, located in Walt Disney World’s Beach Club Resort, officially closed. The seafood restaurant was created to match the nautical theme of the resort, and was named after the main character of the animated feature film The Little Mermaid. After closing, the restaurant’s area was used as a reception venue for weddings held in Walt Disney World. It was briefly reopened in 2017 to accommodate guests while the resort’s main restaurant Captain Grille’s was being refurbished.

May 1, 1989 – The Theater of the Stars Opens in Disney-MGM Studios Park

On May 1, 1989, the amphitheater Theater of the Stars opened on Hollywood Boulevard of Disney-MGM Studios park (now Hollywood Studios). The area was known for featuring the stage show version of the animated feature film Beauty and the Beast. It was temporarily closed on May 2, 1993, as the park prepared for the expansion of Sunset Boulevard, and was eventually moved and reopened in the expanded area.

April 29, 2001 – The Timekeeper Attraction Closes in Walt Disney World

“For your safety, I’ve invented rails for you to lean on. I call them, ‘lean rails.’ Please do not sit on the lean rails because…they’re there to lean on.”

On April 29, 2001, the Tomorrowland attraction The Timekeeper closed in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. It was adapted from the Disneyland Paris attraction Un Voyage à Travers le Temps (known as From Time to Time in English), and used the Circle-Vision 360° film technique, along with Audio-Animatronics, to tell a narrative. Guests would wait in the lobby and meet the invention known as 9-Eye (voiced by Rhea Perlman). Guests would then enter the theater and meet the Timekeeper (voiced by Robin Williams), an inventor who created a time machine. He then sends 9-Eye back in time to record her experiences in important times of the past. After the attraction closed, it would reopen seasonally until it officially closed on February 26, 2006; it was eventually replaced by the Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor.

April 28, 1997 – Cinderella’s Royal Table Officially Opens in Walt Disney World

“Fairytale dining at Cinderella’s Royal Table.”

On April 28, 1997, the special dining experience restaurant Cinderella’s Royal Table opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park, located in Cinderella Castle. A restaurant had always existed within the castle, known as King Stefan’s Banquet Hall (named for the king in Sleeping Beauty); after the renaming to Cinderella’s Royal Table, it eventually became a place for character dining, where guests could meet the titular princess along with other Disney princesses.

April 22, 1998 – The Tusker House Restaurant Opens in Disney’s Animal Kingdom

“At this colorful Harambe marketplace eatery, you’ll find a family-focused buffet brimming with African flavors.”

On April 22, 1998, the buffet-style restaurant Tusker House opened in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park, located in Walt Disney World. Guests can experience character dining with Safari Donald Duck and friends, from breakfast to dinner, while enjoying African-themed dishes such as peri peri whole salmon, basmati rice and curry chicken, and banana bread pudding. Guests 21 and older can go to the nearby Dawa Bar, where they can taste South African wines and African beers.

April 7, 1990 – The Nightclub Cage Opens in Walt Disney World’s Pleasure Island

On April 7, 1990, the nightclub Cage opened in Walt Disney World’s Pleasure Island area of Downtown Disney. Pleasure Island was an evening entertainment area that featured a variety of attractions that would keep guests in the resort rather than traveling to downtown Orlando. Cage was the second incarnation of the nightclub, replacing Videopolis East, and featured progressive music as its selling point. Similar to its predecessor, the club also featured music videos showing on at least 170 monitors. The club closed in 1992, only to be replaced by 8 TRAX.

March 26, 2003 – The Circle-Vision 360° Film Wonders of China Ends its Run

“I’ve come to show you modern China.”

On March 26, 2003, the Circle-Vision 360° film Wonders of China officially ended its run in Epcot’s China Pavilion. Having run since October 1, 1982, the film gave guests panoramic views of China, ranging from its landmarks to its culture. The film would also be used in alternation with the film American Journeys in the Circle-Vision Theater in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland from 1984 to 1996. In Epcot, the film was replaced with Reflections of China, which was an updated version of the original film with additions of new areas Hong Kong and Macau, as well as updated looks at several popular cities.

March 22, 1975 – The Store Posh Pets Opens in Lake Buena Vista Village

On March 22, 1975, the specialty pet store Posh Pets opened in the Lake Buena Vista Village shopping area of Walt Disney World. The shop not only sold accessories and had grooming appointments, but also sold unique and exotic live animals, such as varieties of fish, parrots, and albino skunks. The store closed on October 9, 1976, and was quickly replaced by Toys Fantastique.
