November 4, 2002 – The ABC Soap Opera Bistro Closes in Disney California Adventure

“Cast your favorite entrée to appear with a bistro salad.”

On November 4, 2002, the restaurant ABC Soap Opera Bistro, located in Disney California Adventure’s Hollywood Pictures Backlot, closed. Open for only almost two years, the table-service restaurant was themed after ABC’s collection of soap operas, including General Hospital and All My Children. Guests could not only dine in themed areas of the restaurant, but also buy themed merchandise, including costumes worn by the cast members of the represented soap operas. The restaurant struggled to stay afloat; after it closed, the former restaurant became home for the live-action show “Playhouse Disney – Live on Stage.”

October 20, 2008 – The Blue Sky Cellar Preview Center Opens in Disney California Adventure

“Step into the minds of Walt Disney Imagineers to see how “blue-sky” ideas turn into reality—from concept to completion.”

On October 20, 2008, the preview center Blue Sky Cellar officially opened in Disney California Adventure. Replacing the Seasons of the Vine Theater, the area served as a place where Imagineers could show sketches and models depicting proposed and upcoming attractions; attractions presented there have included Mickey’s Fun Wheel, Silly Symphony Swings, World of Color, Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, Goofy’s Sky School, Cars Land, Buena Vista Street, Fantasy Faire, Mickey & the Magical Map, Market House, and Pixar Pier. Although it originally closed on September 29, 2013, it was reopened on April 13, 2018, as it was used to showcase the plans for what would become Pixar Pier.

October 14, 2010 – Duffy the Disney Bear Makes Official Debut in American Disney Parks

“He’s Mickey’s very own teddy bear…made with love by Minnie herself.”

On October 14, 2010, the character of Duffy the Disney Bear made his official debut in the North American Disney Parks, particularly Epcot in Walt Disney World and Disney California Adventure. A popular character in Tokyo DisneySea, the character was introduced as Mickey’s special bear given to him by Minnie before he set off on a long adventure; the bear originated in Wat Disney World’s Once Upon a Toy as a Disney-themed teddy bear, but was given a backstory when he was brought over to Japan. Duffy, in his character meet-and-greets, wears a special sailor suit. In addition to being added to parks as a meet-and-greet and in merchandise, Duffy got a special program in Epcot where younger guests could take a Duffy mask from country to country, where they could learn about the countries in the World Showcase and earn special Duffy stamps.

October 8, 2010 – The ElecTRONica Promotion Event Kicks Off in Disney California Adventure

“This will be a cool opportunity to peek inside the world of this movie, and it’s available only to visitors of Disney California Adventure park.”

On October 8, 2010, as part of the promotions for the live action feature film Tron: Legacy, the event ElecTRONica kicked off within Disney California Adventure park. The event featured a nighttime dance party; a bar called End of the Line Club; and Flynn’s Arcade, which featured a variety of arcade games from the 1980s. The dance party also featured a variety of live performers amidst the glowing accessories and laser displays. The event ended on April 15, 2012, and was replaced by the Mad T Party.

September 19

September 19, 2010 – Duffy the Disney Bear Premieres in Disney California Adventure

“Together, Duffy and Mickey travel the world sharing adventures and making friends along the way.”

On September 19, 2010, the character Duffy made his first U.S. appearance in Disney California Adventure for Annual Passholders. A popular figure in Japan’s Tokyo DisneySea, the character was introduced as Mickey’s special bear given to him by Minnie before he set off on a long adventure. Duffy, in his character meet-and-greets, wears a special sailor suit; guests can buy their own Duffy and customize his outfits in a variety of ways. Duffy would officially premiere at all U.S. Disney Parks on October 14, 2010.

September 7

September 7, 2011 – The Cupola is Installed at the Carthay Circle Theater

“The Disney Parks Blog video team was on hand to catch some great footage of the cupola as it was raised into position on top of the theatre – take a look!”

On September 7, 2011, the Carthay Circle Theater restaurant was given its crowning feature by Walt Disney Imagineering: the cupola, modeled after the one on the original Carthay Circle Theater, where the world premiere of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was held. A cupola is a high bell tower-like structure; the Disneyland version of the classic theater is a replica of the original theater, which was demolished in 1969.

August 28, 2003 – Lucky the Dinosaur is Introduced in Disney California Adventure

“If you’re not familiar with Lucky, he’s a free-roaming, people-loving, 12-foot-long, 450-pound dinosaur who has occasionally appeared at Disney Parks.”

On August 28, 2003, the first audio-animatronic figure to walk freely and interact with guests, known as Lucky the Dinosaur, was introduced in Disney California Adventure park. It took Imagineers five years to create the nine feet tall, 450-pound figure. Lucky is also notable for walking on two legs and pushing a cart of flowers, as well as personally interacting with passing guests. After working in Disney California Adventure, Lucky was moved to Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2005, and then was relocated to Hong Kong Disneyland.

June 15

June 15, 2012 – Big Top Toys Opens in Disney California Adventure

“Big Top Toys features innovative and interactive toys, games and plush inspired by Disney characters.”

On June 15, 2012, the merchandise stop Big Top Toys opened in Disney California Adventure park. Themed after the animated feature film Dumbo, the shop was a gigantic toy store, featuring all sorts of Disney toys, ranging from princess dolls to plush toys.

May 23, 2014 – The “Rock Your Disney Side Party” Kicks Off in Disney Parks

“We’re Rockin’ our Disney Side for 24 hours – from 6 a.m., May 23 to 6 a.m., May 24, 2014, local time!”

On May 23, 2014, the 24-hour Disney Park event “Rock Your Disney Side” kicked off in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park, Disneyland Park, and Disney California Adventure Park. Guests were encouraged to embrace their “Disney Sides,” particularly if they were showing their #Heroside or #Villainside. The event began at 6:00 am in the parks’ respective time zones, and featured special character meet and greets, including an appearance by villain Maleficent.

March 20

March 20, 2015 – The Smokejumpers Grill Opens in Disney California Adventure

“Before your hunger blazes out of control, combat your fiery appetite with favorites like chili cheeseburgers, smokin’ onion rings and more.”

On March 20, 2015, the Smokejumpers Grill quick-service restaurant opened in the Grizzly Creek Airfield area of Disney California Adventure. Replacing the Taste Pilots’ Grill, the restaurant fits in with the theme of the airfield by basing it off of the men and women who fight the California wildfires. The menu features “classic” dishes, including a bacon cheeseburger, Campfire Chili Cheeseburger, and chili cheese fries made with bison and black beans.
