April 10

April 10, 1988 – The Attraction America Sings Closes in Disneyland

“Yes folks, that was America’s first popular song! And that’s what this show is all about: America’s music.”

On April 10, 1988, the Tomorrowland attraction America Sings officially closed in Disneyland. Open since June 29, 1974 and taking the place of the GE Carousel of Progress, the attraction featured over 100 anthropomorphized animals taking guests on a history of popular music in America. The show was narrated by Sam the Eagle, whose narration is often interrupted by a weasel. After the attraction closed, many of the characters were added to the Splash Mountain attraction.

April 5

April 8, 1973 – The Walt Disney Story Attraction Opens in Disneyland

“But good ol’ Walt, he was the best friend a mouse could have. He gave me my start, you know.”

On April 8, 1973, the Main Street attraction The Walt Disney Story opened in Disneyland’s Opera House. Taking the place of Great Moments wit Mr. Lincoln, the attraction was a movie narrated by Walt Disney himself, providing insight into his life. The attraction also included memorabilia from the Walt Disney Archives, including letters, awards, and a replica of his office in Disney Studios, which was created thanks to photographs and blueprints. Guests, however, missed the Lincoln attraction, and the film ended its run on February 12, 1975; Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln returned to the theater soon after. The film was also an attraction in Walt Disney World from April 15, 1973 through October 5, 1992.

April 7

April 7, 1990 – The Nightclub Cage Opens in Walt Disney World’s Pleasure Island

On April 7, 1990, the nightclub Cage opened in Walt Disney World’s Pleasure Island area of Downtown Disney. Pleasure Island was an evening entertainment area that featured a variety of attractions that would keep guests in the resort rather than traveling to downtown Orlando. Cage was the second incarnation of the nightclub, replacing Videopolis East, and featured progressive music as its selling point. Similar to its predecessor, the club also featured music videos showing on at least 170 monitors. The club closed in 1992, only to be replaced by 8 TRAX.

March 30

March 30, 1996 – The Mike Fink Keel Boats Attraction Reopens in Disneyland

On March 30, 1996, the Mike Fink Keel Boats attraction reopened in Disneyland after being closed for two years. The attraction, named after the boats from the Davy Crockett television serial (specifically the episode “Davy Crockett’s Keel Boat Race”), had originally been open since December 25, 1955, before it closed in 1994. This reopening was short-lived, however, as the attraction was closed permanently on May 17, 1997. Versions of the attraction were available in Walt Disney World (opening on October 1, 1971), and Disneyland Paris (also known as River Rogue Keelboats, and opening April 12, 1992).

March 26

March 26, 2003 – The Circle-Vision 360° Film Wonders of China Ends its Run

“I’ve come to show you modern China.”

On March 26, 2003, the Circle-Vision 360° film Wonders of China officially ended its run in Epcot’s China Pavilion. Having run since October 1, 1982, the film gave guests panoramic views of China, ranging from its landmarks to its culture. The film would also be used in alternation with the film American Journeys in the Circle-Vision Theater in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland from 1984 to 1996. In Epcot, the film was replaced with Reflections of China, which was an updated version of the original film with additions of new areas Hong Kong and Macau, as well as updated looks at several popular cities.

March 22

March 22, 1975 – The Store Posh Pets Opens in Lake Buena Vista Village

On March 22, 1975, the specialty pet store Posh Pets opened in the Lake Buena Vista Village shopping area of Walt Disney World. The shop not only sold accessories and had grooming appointments, but also sold unique and exotic live animals, such as varieties of fish, parrots, and albino skunks. The store closed on October 9, 1976, and was quickly replaced by Toys Fantastique.

March 19

March 19, 1995 – The House of Magic Closes in Magic Kingdom Park

“Magic Tricks, Monster Masks, Sleights of Hand”

On March 19, 1995, the House of Magic shop, located in Magic Kingdom Park’s Main Street, officially closed. Open since Walt Disney World opened on October 1, 1971, the store specialized in magic tricks and special gags, with several cast members on hand to perform several of the more popular illusions. It was closed to make room for the Main Street Athletic Club (which also required the closing of the Penny Arcade and the Main Street Book Shop).

March 17

March 17, 2005 – The Live Show Cinderellabration Opens in Walt Disney World

“Of course we all know that Cinderella married the prince and became princess of the kingdom, but would you like to see how it all happened? Would you like to see Cinderella crowned a princess?”

On March 17, 2005, the live show Cinderellabration began performances in front of Cinderella Castle in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. This was a revised version of the stage show that was created for the 20th anniversary celebration of Tokyo Disneyland, which told the story of Cinderella’s coronation; it was also included as an aspect of the “Happiest Celebration of Earth” festivities. Cinderella is joined by several other beloved Disney Princesses, including Snow White, Aurora, Jasmine, and Belle. The stage show closed on September 16, 2006, and was replaced with Dream Along with Mickey.

March 14

March 14, 1975 – The Magic Carpet ‘Round the World Film Attraction Closes in Walt Disney World

On March 14, 1975, the film attraction Magic Carpet ‘Round the World, located in the Tomorrowland Circle-Vision Theatre, officially closed. Open since March 16, 1974, the 360-degree film gave guests majestic views of some of the world’s most beautiful places. After it was closed, it was replaced by an updated version of the attraction’s predecessor, America the Beautiful. The film would be revived in Tokyo Disneyland, opening on April 15, 1983, and closing on May 16, 1986.

March 11

March 11, 1996 – Grandma Duck’s Farm Closes in Walt Disney World

“Minnie Moo, who lives at Grandma Duck’s Farm at Mickey’s Starland, was born sporting the familiar Disney corporate symbol as a ‘birthmark’ on her hide.”

On March 11, 1996, the petting farm Grandma Duck’s Farm closed in the Mickey’s Birthdayland area of Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. Open since June 18, 1988, and sponsored by Friskies, the area was named for the comic book character of Donald Duck’s grandmother. The area was famous for hosting Minnie Moo, a cow that happened to have a Mickey Mouse-shaped mark on her hide; after the petting farm closed, Minnie Moo was moved to Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort.
