StF_2

“I’m not ready to be a princess, I don’t have what it takes. I’m too short for gowns, I look bad in crowns, and I’m gonna make a bajillion mistakes.”

On November 22, 2012, the animated movie Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess premiered on Disney Junior after a premiere on Disney Channel on November 18th. It was created as the lead-in to the animated series Sofia the First, which premiered on January 11, 2013. The movie was directed by Jamie Mitchell, and was written by Craig Gerber. It stars Ariel Winter as Sofia, Darcy Rose Byrnes as Amber, Sara Ramirez as Queen Miranda, Wayne Brady as Clover, Travis Willingham as King Roland, Tim Gunn as Baileywick, Russi Taylor as Fauna, Barbara Dirickson as Flora, Tress MacNeille as Merryweather, and Jennifer Hale as Cinderella.

The movie begins in with Flora, Fauna, and Merriweather introducing the story of Sofia, who lives in a kingdom of Enchancia. She lived a simple life with her mother Miranda, a shoemaker, and one day they are summoned to the castle to make shoes for King Roland the Second. The moment Miranda and Roland’s eyes meet, they fell in love, and are soon married. Sofia and her mother are soon taken to live at the castle, and are joined by several woodland creatures, unbeknownst to Sofia. Roland’s children Amber and James are asked to make Sofia feel welcome, but Amber is not quite warm to the idea of a new stepsister. As the crowd cheers for the new additions to the royal family, the Royal Sorcerer Cedric makes a large storm appear, although Roland informs him that he wanted “flowers,” not “showers.”

After the family heads inside, Sofia bumps into Cedric, and she is excited to meet him, although he gets angry about the “parlor tricks” he’s performing for the king before he makes himself disappear. Sofia then meets Baileywick, the Steward of the Castle, and directs her to the banquet hall. During their meal, Roland lets Sofia know that they will be throwing a ball in her honor as a way of welcoming her into the family. She and Roland will be dancing the first waltz, and Sofia is nervous about this. She is then taken to her own room, and she is shocked at how large it is. Although she is grateful for her new life, she’s still nervous about everything and thinks she’s not ready to be a princess. She goes to talk to Miranda, who reassures her that she’ll be fine. Roland then gives Sofia a present of a special amulet, and she must promise to never take it off. Amber sees Sofia receive the gift and storms off in a huff of jealousy. Sofia is once again reassured that everything will be okay, and heads back to her room. She runs into Cedric again, and he is very interested in her amulet. Cedric heads back to his room and reads up on the amulet, known as the Amulet of Avalor, and vows to take it from Sofia so he can take over the kingdom.

The next morning, Sofia is woken up by the woodland creatures that had followed her, but they are soon driven out of the room by Baileywick. Soon after, Sofia heads off to school with Amber and James in a carriage pulled by flying horses. When they arrive at the school, she meets the headmistresses Flora, Fauna, and Merriweather. They give her the tour of the school, and take her to her first class. She is greeted by her classmates, including Amber, but drops all of her books when she reciprocates. Amber smirks, but soon her jealousy grows when other students rush over to help Sofia. Amber gets James to take a ride on the enchanted swing set, and everyone watches as the swing throws Sofia into the fountain. Sofia tries to take it in stride, but one of the other students gives James a hard time for tricking his sister in such a mean way. As Sofia walks away, she hears a strange sound, and finds a baby bird that has fallen from its nest. She returns the baby to its mother, and her amulet glows. As she heads back to the school, she hears the mother bird say her thanks, but she thinks she imagined it.

After school, Sofia rushes inside without a word to her siblings, although James wants to apologize. Sofia runs into Cedric again, who offers to give her a private tour of his lair, and she accepts. She discovers the book he has about her amulet, and he explains the powers of the amulet: “with each deed performed for better or worse, a power is granted – a blessing, or a curse.” He tries to take the amulet for her, but she remembers her promise to never take off the amulet, and is quickly shown out. The next morning, the animals wake her up again, and she can hear what the animals are saying. The rabbit, named Clover, explains that the animals always help the princesses, but all they want is a little bit of food for their trouble. Sofia prepares the animals a basket of food, and they set up a picnic outside. Soon, she has to go to school, but Clover reminds her to keep her eye on the ball – the royal ball. She is cheered by his pep talk, and heads to school with renewed enthusiasm. After making several mistakes, she soon masters the skills, and makes several new friends.

Sofia arrives home, exhausted, and is cheered up when she sees her friends Jade and Ruby waiting for her in the garden. While attempting to pour tea, James comes over and assists her as his way of apologizing for the prank. He offers to help train her for the ball, and Sofia accepts. Amber is strolling through the garden and overhears Sofia admitting she can’t dance, and gets a wicked idea in her head on how to embarrass Sofia. The next day at dance class, Sophia is given a special pair of shoes to wear by Amber, and when she dances with the teacher, the shoes start acting up, making Sofia jump around the room like crazy. She realizes that Amber has tricked her, and after she is able to get the shoes off, she heads to the carriage, upset. She goes to see Cedric before the ball, asking for a spell to make her a better dancer. He gives her a spell to say when the waltz starts, but he gives her a spell to put everyone to sleep, and will only reverse the spell if Sofia gives him the amulet. Before the ball begins, James confronts Amber, angry at his sister’s actions, and is hurt when he tells her that everyone likes Sofia more than they like her, especially after her horrible actions.

In the end, Sofia is able to case the counter-spell to save everyone

When Sofia casts the spell, everyone in the palace is put to sleep, leaving Sofia in a panic

Sofia attends the ball and is greeted by Roland, who takes her to the floor for the first dance. Sofia recites the spell, and is shocked when everyone falls asleep. Cedric, excited that his spell worked, didn’t count on the spell working on him as well, and falls to the floor in a sound slumber. Sofia frantically runs around the castle looking for help, and a tear lands on the amulet. She turns around to find Cinderella there waiting to help her. Cinderella can’t undo the spell, but can help her find her way. Cinderella relates her only regret: not making amends with her step-sisters. After her story, she takes her to see Amber, and convinces Sofia to give Amber a second chance. She takes Amber to the ballroom, and explains what happened. Amber apologizes for her prank which caused Sofia to get a spell, and the two make amends, with Amber calling Sofia her sister for the first time. The two head to Cedric’s lair to find a counter-spell, with some assistance from Clover and the other animals. Amber and Sofia find the counter-spell book, and before they wake everyone, Amber helps teach Sofia how to dance. After reciting the counter-spell, Sofia has her first dance with Roland, which goes off successfully, except that Roland admits that he can’t dance very well. During the dance, the whole family dances together, and all is well.

JC_2

“Why rush to face the future? Take every day in stride! Life’s one long, lazy river, boys. Relax, enjoy the ride.”

On October 5, 1996, the animated series Jungle Cubs premiered on ABC. Based on the 1967 animated feature film The Jungle Book, the series takes those characters back to their younger days, along with two original characters: the buzzards Cecil and Arthur. This is the second animated series to feature these characters, with the first being TaleSpin in 1990, although TaleSpin is not considered a true spin-off or parody of The Jungle Book. The series ran for two seasons, with 21 episodes in total. It was created by Mark S. Bernthal, and starred Jim Cummings as Kaa, E.G. Daily as Bagheera, Jason Marsden as Shere Khan and Louie, Rob Paulsen as Hathi, Pam Segall as Baloo, Michael McKean as Cecil, and David Lander as Arthur.

The first episode, “A Night in the Wasteland,” begins with a view of the jungle, and Shere Khan trying to capture a fish from the river, when it is taken by a large bird. Baloo laughs at Khan’s misfortune, as well as Louie. Khan is not happy to hear that they placed bets on his ability to capture fish, and threatens them before he walks off. Baloo and Louie aren’t scared by his threats, and head back to Louie’s palace to tell the tale of Khan’s bad luck. Bagheera warns them not to make fun of Khan, as one day he’ll grow up, and they’ll all be in trouble. Baloo reminds him to relax, as they’ll all grow up one day, but there’s no need to rush. Louie acknowledges that one day, Khan will rule the jungle, but his mishap showed that he’s still scared of some things. Khan shows up and intimidates Louie for telling everyone about the incident, and then chases him around the palace. The rest of the group breaks up the fight. While Khan intimidates the others into admitting he’s not afraid of anything, he overhears Louie talking about Khan’s greatest weakness: The Wasteland. The Wasteland is home to Mahra, the meanest baboon in the jungle, although Khan decides he wants to go there to prove he’s not afraid, and will roar from the top of Pinnacle Rock to prove he was there.

In the Wasteland, Mahra is watching her three sons tear apart her animal skin, and she berates them, ordering them to get a new blanket. Khan soon heads off to the Wasteland, thinking that Mahra has gone south. Baloo, Louie, and Kaa head out to see if Khan actually made it, and Bagheera, after seeing the night bats out before dark, realizes that Mahra’s back, and they’re all in terrible danger. He and Hathi rush off after the group to warn them. Meanwhile, Khan continues his journey, but he is frightened by some strange noises he hears. Louie decides to sneak up behind Khan and scare him, although he, Baloo, and Kaa are frightened themselves. They flee after hearing some strange noises, and end up in the graveyard, which is a shortcut to Pinnacle Rock. Louie gets an idea to use some of the bones to scare Khan, which works a little too well, and the three end up caught by Mahra’s sons. Khan leaves them behind, but they are soon saved by Hathi and Bagheera. Unfortunately, Mahra appears and sends them home, except for Baloo, as she wants his skin to create a new blanket. Khan appears from the top of Pinnacle Rock and saves the group by scaring Mahra. The next day, he questions them, but no one has a good answer, save for Bagheera. Khan doesn’t believe them, and reminds them that he saved them. The group admits that Khan is the bravest and strongest, although they find that his greatest weakness is his mother, who angrily calls for him.

Nicky and Milo tell her that it’s not noticeable, but Pepper Ann continues to let her imagination run away with her, imagining a worst case scenario where she can only get a low wage job in the future. She asks her mom Lydia to buy her the pimple cream, but Lydia doesn’t seem to notice. Lydia asks her to go to Abe’s Mall to buy the cream and some film, but Pepper Ann refuses to go to what she calls the “Abys-mall,” as only geeks and old people shop there. In the end, she decides to go there, although she seems to run into everyone from school on the way there.

Pepper Ann finally makes her way to Abe’s Mall, and sneaks inside wearing a disguise. Unfortunately, the pimple cream refuses to be rung up, and she dives across the cash register thanks to her embarrassment. What she doesn’t realize, however, is that the photographer is taking the last picture of the day of Pinkeye Pete, a student constantly struggling with conjunctivitis. She arrives home to find her friends have been kidnapped by her mother for a photo shoot. The next day, Pepper Ann’s pimple has disappeared, but the photographer has to cancel thanks to a severe case of pinkeye. In class, Pepper Ann’s secret about going to Abe’s Mall is out, as their teacher announces that she saw her there. When she gets home, she finds that Abe’s Mall is on television being promoted by her favorite band as the “coolest shopping place in the colonies,” and there’s a shot of Pepper Ann shopping there. The next day at school, she’s touted by the other students as “fashion forward,” and gets the attention of popular eighth-grader Craig Bean. Unfortunately, her good mood is soon ruined when she finds out who is taking the yearbook photos: her mother.

The first half episode, “Boara Boara,” begins with Timon and Pumbaa being washed up on the shore of an island, although they were hoping to end up in a snowy place for a ski vacation. They decide to make the best of it and enjoy the beach. Unfortunately, they aren’t alone, as a tribe in the island has decided to take Pumbaa to make them their meal. Timon panics when he can’t find his friend, while Pumbaa is being served up to the king of the tribe. The King, however, beats his henchmen when they realize that Pumbaa resembles their god. Timon braves through the jungle to find his friend, and is irritated to find his friend being revered. When he attempts to take Pumbaa away, the tribe captures Timon and takes him to the volcano as a sacrifice, although Timon mistakes it as them making him King. When they reach the top of the volcano, Timon is thrown into the lava, and barely manages to make it out alive, and begs the tribe to keep him alive, offering to do anything. The anything he ends up doing though is serving Pumbaa hand and foot. After a while, Pumbaa is asked to make fire for the tribe, but is soon revealed as an imposter. Timon and Pumbaa attempt to escape, when they decide instead to distract the tribe with a samba. In the end, the tribe members decide to leave, and Timon and Pumbaa head back to the beach, where they discover that developers have taken over.

The second half, “Saskatchewan Catch,” begins with Timon and Pumbaa bug hunting in a forest for the best-tasting bug in the universe: the Saskatchewan Sky-High Beetle. Timon is just about to catch it when he falls from his perch and lands on a branch. A flying squirrel falls from a height and hits Timon, and the two fall to the ground. Pumbaa then states that Timon has fallen sixteen times, and maybe they could use some help. Pumbaa suggests that they get the help of the flying squirrel, and Timon tries to butter her up to help her. She promises to help them, only if they help her get the affections of another flying squirrel. Timon sets to work in getting the male squirrel’s attention, but to no avail. They are finally able to capture the male squirrel, and they trick him into having dinner with the female squirrel. He is taken with her on first sight, and the romance between them begins to bloom. However, Timon disagrees with the male’s take on love, as the male squirrel wants to give up all of his freedom to be with woman. In the end, although they get the lovers together, they are unable to get the bugs that they wanted, as the squirrels fly off into the night together.

April 30, 2012 – The Disney XD Original Series Motorcity Premieres

vlcsnap-2014-04-30-18h47m36s33

“Down here in Motorcity, we’ve got a motto: Live Fast, Live Free. And my friends and I are gonna fight Kane with everything we’ve got to make sure we can do just that.”

On April 30, 2012, the Disney XD original animated series Motorcity premiered. The series took place in an alternate universe version of Detroit, with a group of rebels known as the Burners fighting billionair Abraham Kane, who built his version of utopia over the old city of Detroit, now known as Motorcity. The series was a co-production between Titmouse, Inc. and Disney Television Animation. The series only lasted for one season, with 20 episodes, and ended its run on January 7, 2013. It was created by Chris Prynoski, and was directed by Prynoski and Juno Lee. It starred Reid Scott as Mike Chilton, Kate Micucci as Julie Kane, Nate Torrence as Chuck, Kel Mitchell as Dutch, Jess Harnell as Texas, Brian Doyle-Murray as Jacob, and Mark Hamill as Abraham Kane.

The first episode, “Battle for Motorcity,” begins with Mike and his friend Chuck attempting to go down in the inner depths of Motorcity to find a fusion battery. While they uncover the jackpot of parts that they need, Julie warns them that Kane’s forces are about to storm the East Gate. The East Gate falls as Julie warns them, and they hurry back with the battery as the place falls apart around them, thanks to Mike pulling some skull decoration lodged in a wall. The two scramble their way back to the surface and back to Mike’s car, where he places the skull on the selection lever and speeds his way out through the wreckage of Motorcity, with Chuck leading his way out. While Julie waits for the battery, Kane makes an appearance on the Easy Gate screen, telling them all that he will take the entire city out, and has sent a “friend” to help him do so: a giant robot. Mike arrives just in time to place the battery close the gate, destroying more of the robot, with Mike taking care of the rest. Kane then calls Mike a coward for “abandoning his post,” as Mike used to be a cadet with Kane’s army.

After Kane's public attack on Mike's character, Julie checks to see if Mike is okay

After Kane’s public attack on Mike’s character, Julie checks to see if Mike is okay

Back in his office, Kane remarks that Mike is giving Motorcity residents hope, and “hope is a dangerous thing.” He then thinks that if he had spotted Mike’s traitorous behavior early enough, all of Detroit would have been his already. Back at the Burners’ garage, everyone is fixing up their cars, while Julie cheers up Mike, who wishes he could fight Kane face to face. Julie then heads off to her internship at Kane Co., as she is the Burners’ inside connection. Kane then announces that he will be appearing at Kane Co. Square, in person, to reveal something new. Mike decides this is the perfect opportunity to take Kane down, although Dutch and Tex are less than thrilled with the idea. Dutch fixes up Mike’s car for the event, though, which Mike is thrilled about. The gang then heads to Detroit Deluxe to take Kane down. Julie tries to figure out what the announcement is, and realizes that she needs to warn the Burners. Her warning comes too late, and she tells them that she needs to turn around, but Mike refuses to listen. When Mike thinks he has Kane cornered, he realizes that he’s been tricked, and the gang is quickly trapped. Kane then sends his robots through the defense matrix to trap them.

As Julie heads off to help the guys, she is stopped by Kane, who wants to give his daughter a hug. Kane is completely unaware of her fight against him. In Motorcity, the residents scramble to survive against the robot attacks, while Julie works on a way to get out of the guys out of their pods. The guys are finally free, and they head back to Motorcity to save the residents. Kane torments Mike, telling him it’s too late to save Motorcity, but Mike refuses to take the bait. The Burners work fast to take down the robots, and Kane arrives in the last robot to fight Mike one on one. Mike declares that his fight is for Motorcity, especially after Kane betrayed him, and wins the battle. The Burners celebrate and fix their cars back at the base after watching Kane announce that he is tripling his efforts to eradicate the Burners.

April 6, 1991 – The Animated Series Darkwing Duck Premieres on the Disney Channel

vlcsnap-2014-04-06-10h13m17s251

“I am the terror that flaps in the night!”

On April 6, 1991, the original animated series Darkwing Duck premiered on the Disney Channel, after a sneak peek on March 31. The first episode, “Darkly Dawns the Duck,” was an hour-long special that also served as the series pilot. The series itself was a spin-off from the DuckTales series, and the first original series to be a genre parody. The show proved to be highly popular, and began syndication on September 7, 1991. Overall, the series had three seasons with 91 episodes. It was created by Tad Stones, and starred Jim Cummings as Darkwing Duck/Drake Mallard, Terry McGovern as Launchpad McQuack, and Christine Cavanaugh as Gosalyn Waddlemeyer.

“Darkly Dawns the Duck” begins in the city of St. Canard, where Darkwing is dropping off some criminals at the police station. He hopes to receive media attention for his good deeds, but no one knows anything about him. He arrives back at his hideout the next morning and decides to cook his breakfast before he goes to sleep. His routine of getting his breakfast also acts as a workout, which he handles with ease, save for the milk. He declares that “there’s not a street punk in this city that isn’t afraid of Darkwing Duck,” before he heads off to sleep, although he wishes he could get a shot at a real big-time criminal. As he laments, big-time criminal Taurus Bulba is chastising his henchmen for questioning his plan. It is soon revealed that Bulba is actually in prison, but has a fancy lair setup that disappears with the press of a button when the warden stops by.

As Darkwing searches for danger, a suspicious condor flies past him carrying a trunk

As Darkwing searches for danger, a suspicious condor flies past him carrying a trunk

Darkwing spends the next night at the top of his lair, scouring the city for any wrongdoing, when he sees a condor flying by with a trunk. Thinking this is suspicious, he quickly gets on his motorcycle and follows the condor. Bulba’s henchmen are quickly at work catching a nearby train that has something guarded by military guards. As they prepare to take off with the weapon, Darkwing arrives on the scene. He recognizes the henchmen as belonging to Bulba, and gets excited that this could be his chance to hit the big time. He appears in front of them in a cloud of smoke and knocks the guards unconscious, but stops for a photo op. The carriage containing the weapon flies off, with Darkwing attached, and he is disconnected from the carriage by the condor. Darkwing falls into a nearby barn, and is quickly attacked by Launchpad McQuack, who mistakes Darkwing as a thief. When he does recognize Darkwing, he admits that he’s the hero’s greatest fan, which pleases Darkwing immensely. Launchpad then helps Darkwing chase after the carriage in one of Launchpad’s planes, but the condor is there once again to drop Darkwing to his death.

As Darkwing plummets, Launchpad quickly takes the plane over to catch him. Both are pursued by the condor, and as Launchpad tries to take some evasive measures, the plane crashes, leaving the enemy to get away. When Launchpad asks what happens next, Darkwing angrily proclaims that he works alone, and never wants to see Launchpad ever again. The next day in the prison, Bulba finds the weapon available for him, but is unable to use it as he doesn’t know the arming code. The creator, Professor Waddlemeyer, died in an “accident” the year prior, so Bulba orders his henchmen to get his granddaughter from the St. Canard Orphanage. Bulba’s main henchman, Hammerhead, goes to the orphanage claiming to be a friend of the family, and takes Waddlemeyer’s granddaughter Gosalyn for a walk. She vents to him about how she isn’t a problem child, but no one wants to adopt her, but one day she’ll meet someone who understands her. Hammerhead is touched by Gosalyn’s story, but then attempts to kidnap her. She is then is taken by Darkwing as he drives by on his motorcycle, although she at first doesn’t believe he’s a hero. As they speed around town, joined by Launchpad, Darkwing tries to take Gosalyn to the safety of the police station, only to find that the police are firing at him. Gosalyn grabs a newspaper and finds an article accusing Darkwing of stealing a train. As they drive off a pier into the ocean, Launchpad loses Darkwing and Gosalyn, but the two are safely in Darkwing’s lair.

Gosalyn stands amazed at the size of Darkwing’s lair, hidden in the city’s bridge

Gosalyn is amazed at Darkwing’s hideout, and asks if she can stay with him. He refuses, but she threatens to tell people where his hideout is. Bulba finds out the bad news from Hammerhead, and plans on drawing Darkwing out to get the girl. Bulba then makes his escape from the prison in a flying ship, and decides that it’s finally time to meet Darkwing Duck. Meanwhile, in his hideout, Darkwing deals with Gosalyn, as she starts messing with things she shouldn’t be. She sets off his breakfast training session, and is able to handle it better than Darkwing. She lectures him on safety, but he just thinks he’s adorable. She then asks if he’ll ever take off his mask, but he refuses. He lets her sleep in his bed, and explains to her why Bulba wants her, but she just gets upset when recalling her grandfather. When Darkwing remarks on how much spirit she has, she lights up and gives him a kiss on the cheek, as that’s what her grandfather used to say about her. She then asks Darkwing to sing her a lullaby, and she teaches him the lullabye her grandfather used to sing her. He continues the song, lulling her to sleep. Later, he realizes that the lyrics to Gosalyn’s lullaby is the arming code, although she doesn’t realize it herself.

A light shines through the window, alerting Darkwing. The light is actually signaling morse code, with the message: “Taurus Bulba, the criminal genius, recognizing the error of his ways, is offering to surrender himself, but only to Darkwing Duck.” Darkwing quickly recognizes the code, and Gosalyn wakes up at his excitement. Gosalyn is suspicious of the message, and starts mocking Darkwing. Angered, he says that once he captures Bulba, Gosalyn will go back to the orphanage, greatly upsetting her. He heads out of his hideout, unaware that Bulba’s condor was watching to find where Darkwing’s hideout is, and Bulba sends his men to go get Gosalyn. Darkwing meets up with Bulba, and Bulba starts mocking him, asking why he should surrender to Darkwing. The police are D to the scene and capture Darkwing, while he panics that Bulba is going to get Gosalyn. When the henchmen arrive to take Gosalyn, she defends herself with Darkwing’s breakfast training set, but she is soon captured by Bulba’s condor.

Just when things look hopeless for Darkwing, Launchpad appears and saves the day

Just when things look hopeless for Darkwing, Launchpad appears and saves the day

Darkwing is sitting in jail, lamenting his fate, and worried about Gosalyn. When he feels he has nothing left, Launchpad breaks into the prison by accident and helps him escape, although he admits he was coming by to bail Darkwing out. The two make their way to Bulba’s hideout in Launchpad’s secret weapon: the Thunderquack, a flying machine that looks like Darkwing. Darkwing, appreciative, calls Launchpad his sidekick. They reach the airship and narrowly dodge the Bulba’s attack. They create a hole in the ship, and Darkwing breaks in, looking for Gosalyn. It looks like Darkwing is outnumbered, and the two are taken hostage. Bulba threatens to kill Gosalyn unless Darkwing tells him the code. Darkwing enters the code from the lullaby, and the machine is armed. Bulba uses the machine to steal gold bars from the federal gold depository, and decides to kill Gosalyn, but Launchpad is able to save the girl. Darkwing then destroys the machine, and Bulba’s airship is sent crashing into the ocean. Bulba attempts to kill Darkwing, and the machine explodes, with Gosalyn and Launchpad watching in terror.

Back at the orphanage, Gosalyn sits in her room, depressed, not wanting to meet any prospective parents. When she hears the voice of a Drake Mallard, she recognizes it immediately and runs out to find him in the main office. She tackles him with a hug, and he tells her that he now needs a secret identity, as he has an adopted daughter to take care of, with Launchpad to help him out. Launchpad, true to form, accidentally reverses the car into the wall of the orphanage.

“There’s no case too big, no case too small, if you need help, just call!”

On March 4, 1989, the animated series Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers premiered on the Disney Channel with the episode “Piratsy Under the Seas.” The series entered syndication on September 18, 1989. After the success of Duck Tales in 1987, three series were created to be part of a line-up on the Disney Channel: Chip ‘n’ Dale, TaleSpin, and a show that would eventually become Darkwing Duck. The original version of Chip ‘n’ Dale did not feature the chipmunk duo; it was due to the urging of Michael Eisner that Chip and Dale were used, as it was thought to be better to use established Disney characters than create new ones. Chip was given the clothes of the original conceived character Kit, who was seen as an Indiana Jones-style explorer. Dale’s attire resembled that of Magnum, P.I., a popular detective series of the 1980s. The show was added to the Disney Afternoon lineup and, along with the other shows in that programming block, was very well received. The series was created by Tad Stones and Alan Zaslove, and starred Tress MacNeille as Chip and Gadget, Corey Burton as Dale and Zipper, and Peter Cullen as Monterey Jack.

The first episode, “Piratsy Under the Seas,” begins with Chip waking up to find the treehouse a mess. He angrily asks Dale why he insists on living like a slob, and the two continue to argue until Gadget enters the room. Dale is then ordered to clean up by Chip, Gadget, and Monterey Jack. Chip watches and laughs as Dale trips into the trash can, but is alarmed to find that the garbage man is there for the daily pickup, and can only watch as Dale is thrown into the garbage truck. Chip and the team quickly follow after the truck in one of Gadget’s gadgets, but they hit a bump and are all thrown into the same garbage truck as it’s stopped at a stoplight. The gang then finds themselves drifting out to sea on a barge full of garbage and, thanks to Dale’s clumsiness, Chip and Dale get stuck inside a bottle. Gadget spots a barrel in the water, and a pirate flag springs from the top. The pirates set out a net to gather some of the trash from the barge, and captures Chip and Dale, dragging them into the ocean. Monterey and Gadget quickly attempt to follow them.

As they are pulled below, Chip and Dale manage to spring themselves free from the net, but are soon captured by an angry octopus, who pulls them down again. As the two finally manage to wrangle themselves free, they end up inside a wrecked ship, and are greeted by the pirates inside. They save them from “Billy the Squid,” and introduce themselves. The pirates are led by Jolly Roger, who invites Chip and Dale to a pirate’s feast. Meanwhile, on the surface, Gadget is still trying to concoct something that will help them travel underwater. Chip and Dale are at the feast, and Dale is happily surprised to find that the pirates are as messy as he is. As Dale rushes to join them on a treasure hunt, Chip lectures Dale that, as Rescue Rangers, they have a job to do, but Dale wants to play with the pirates for a while. Dale leads the pirates to the treasure, and Chip then attempts to leave, but the pirates tell them that, since they have seen the treasure, they will have to stay with the pirates for the rest of their lives. Gadget finally finishes her creation, and the rest of the team heads underwater, but end up running into Billy the Squid. They quickly escape and head inside the wreckage, narrowly avoiding Billy’s grasp. They end up in the treasure room, and Gadget tricks Billy into slamming his arm into a nearby treasure chest.

Monterey and Zipper search through the ship for Chip and Dale, while Gadget works on creating another vehicle. Monterey finds Chip and Dale locked up in a cage, and gets an idea to pretend to be the missing captain Long Lost Lafitte, who had disappeared over 200 years prior. The pirates are a bit suspicious, and call for Young Ned, who was the original captain’s cabin boy. Monterey passes the cabin boy’s test, and orders Dale and Chip free. Although Monterey reluctantly refuses to take the treasure with him to the surface, he is unable to resist the special cheese of Captain Lafitte, which Young Ned had been saving all those years. His disguise falls off as he runs to the cheese and, realizing he’s been tricked, the Jolly Roger and his crew tie up the Rescue Rangers and makes them walk the plank. Chip comes up with an idea, and the gang works together to stop themselves from becoming Billy the Squid’s food. Gadget then has the idea of sending the entire ship up to the surface, surmising that the weight of the treasure is what’s holding the wreckage down. Gadget, Chip, and Dale use a cannon to blast the treasure out of the ship, while Monterey and Zipper act as a distraction. Once the cannon is fired and the treasure freed, the ship quickly heads to the surface. The pirates are delighted to find that they can live on the surface again and have real adventures, and the Rescue Rangers wave them goodbye as they sail away.
