WWHW_1

“Just because you don’t miss it, doesn’t mean it isn’t missing.”

On June 16, 2006, the Disney Channel Original Movie Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior premiered. The film garnered 5.7 million viewers on its premiere, making it the fifth highest viewed Disney Channel Original Movie, as well as breaking viewing records in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Europe. It was also the second Disney Channel Original Movie to be released on iTunes, and the first to air on the Disney owned ABC Family. The film overall received good reviews, with many praising lead actress Brenda Song as the title character. It was mostly filmed in Auckland, New Zealand, with excutive producer for the Power Rangers series Koichi Sakamoto acting as the action unit director; many actors that have been in the Power Rangers series were also featured in the film. The film was written by Vince Cheung, Ben Montanio, Lydia Look, and Mark Seabrooks. It was directed by John Laing, and stars Brenda Song as Wendy Wu, Shin Koyamada as Shen, Ellen Woglom as Jessica, and Tsai Chin as Grandma Wu.

The film begins in Mongolia, where soldiers are training in a courtyard. One soldier in particular named Shen is able to best all the others, when he is called forward to take on the task of defeating an ancient evil, and is sent to retrieve an ancient warrior in California. Meanwhile, Wendy Wu is sitting in class, not paying attention as usual, and dreams of being Homecoming Queen. She is competing against a girl named Jessica, and is angry that she may lose the crown. Little by little, Wendy is displaying fighting skills, which begins to frighten her. Shen arrives in California and begins his search.

Late that night, at the Civic Museum in Fair Springs, California, a mysterious package is delivered and taken to the archives where the artifacts for the Chinese exhibit are being held. The box glows ominously, killing a nearby flower. Shen, meanwhile, arrives at Wendy’s house, and when Wendy opens the door, she is scared by his proclamation that she is a warrior named Miaozhen, a warrior born in the Wei Dynasty, sworn to defeat evil. She begins to fight him, displaying her innate skills of being an ancient warrior, and manages to send him away. As this occurs, the item inside the strange box at the museum begins to cast a spell before it escapes, possessing a security guard. It recognizes Wendy from the picture on her mother’s desk, and possesses Wendy’s brother Peter when he comes to deliver a pizza. Shen, waiting outside Wendy’s house, spies Peter returning home, and senses an evil spirit within him. He infiltrates the house to protect her, fighting Peter while Wendy sleeps, oblivious. After Peter is defeated, the evil creature possesses the family dog instead.

The next morning, Wendy wakes up to discover a protective necklace around her neck, and removes it, thinking it to be a joke by her brother. Shen keeps a close watch on the house as everyone leaves for their day. He enters the house and finds Wendy’s grandmother holding the necklace, asking if Wendy is the warrior, and then asks him to protect her. Shen promises he will, then runs after her, demanding that she wear the necklace for protection and warns her that she is in danger. During a soccer match, Wendy once again shows her innate skills, while her dog enters the school, looking for her. The principal is soon possessed by the evil spirit. Shen finally catches up with Wendy and tries to explain everything. Wendy is rather rattled by what he says, and doesn’t wish to start training. He tells her friends that he is her cousin from China, and wishes to keep it a secret. Shen continues to guard her, whether she likes it or not, and Wendy’s grandmother makes sure Wendy wears the necklace, certain that her granddaughter will be a great warrior.

Shen arrives at the school the next day, preventing the principal from attacking Wendy, with the spirit soon possessing her history teacher, Mr. Medina. Meanwhile, Wendy’s nemesis Jessica has made it her mission to prevent Wendy from being Homecoming Queen, including disqualifying her from the nominations altogether. Dismayed, Wendy believes there is no way to pass her history class. Shen offers to help her with passing her history midterm on China, only if she wears the medallion. She finally agrees, just as Mr. Medina is about to attack Wendy. The spirit soon moved on to a janitor. Wendy and Shen begin to train, with Wendy not taking it as seriously as she should. She finally understands, and begins to meditate everywhere, even at school. She then passes the midterm with an A, and is able to focus her mind and begin her training, although she goes back to her homecoming campaign, leaving Shen dismayed.

Later, Wendy asks her grandmother if she misses China, and her grandmother responds that she does, recalling memories of the village where she grew up, including a story of a young female yin warrior named Miaozhen. She then reveals that her own mother was a yin warrior, and Wendy needs to accept the honor. The family then meets Shen, who pretends to be a distant relative of Wendy’s grandmother. He offers to help Wendy’s mother with her terracotta warrior exhibit, and she gratefully accepts. He then wins over the rest of the family, except for Wendy’s father, who suddenly gets moody. Wendy then takes Shen to the mall for her own kind of training: dressing Shen like an American teenager. Late that night, Wendy’s mom and dad talk, with Wendy’s dad feeling guilty that he’s turned his back on his Chinese heritage. The two decide to incorporate more of their Chinese heritage into their lives.

The two open up to each other, with Wendy dismayed to find that Shen must die in battle

Wendy soon discovers that she’s growing bored of her boyfriend Austin, and discovers she’s developing feelings for Shen. Shen warns Wendy that she will need to train harder than any of the past yin warriors to defeat the evil spirit, as it grows stronger and stronger each 90-year cycle. The two then discuss their lives, and Wendy admits that she doesn’t love her boyfriend, and is only with him because everyone says they look good together. As the two bond, Shen reveals that he will die during the battle, that it is his destiny to sacrifice himself to save Wendy, as it has been over the thousands of years he has been reincarnated. She is dismayed by this, but he has no regrets. Wendy then brings him to a party to act like a teenager, and is upset by the attention he gets, as she wants to spend time with him. She breaks up with Austin, and watches as Shen impresses everyone at the party. When a girl kisses him, however, she storms out of the party and tosses aside the medallion, unaware that her best friend Tory is now possessed by the evil spirit. She confesses everything to Tory, but Tory attempts to attack Wendy, until Shen steps in to save her. Tory is then knocked into the pool, and Shen and Wendy leave to continue training. The evil spirit then possesses Jessica through Jessica’s camera.

At training, Shen lets Wendy know they’ve reached the final part of her training, where she will be trained by five ancient masters: the tiger, the snake, the leopard, the crane, and the dragon. Shen reveals he is the dragon, which is the last lesson, and they begin training with the snake, who is Shen’s master from the temple. Wendy doesn’t feel comfortable beating up an old man, so Shen has the spirits of the ancient masters possess her teachers from school, starting with her gym teacher Coach Gibbs as the snake. Her principal becomes the leopard, teacher Mr. Tobias becomes the crane, and her history teacher Mr. Medina becomes the tiger. Wendy completes her lessons, and Shen informs her that she’s now become a yin warrior. Soon after, Wendy finds out that she’s been named Homecoming Queen, but thanks Shen sincerely for his help and invites him to homecoming as her date. He refuses, and she remembers that he has to die in battle, which will occur the next day during homecoming. She is upset that he didn’t tell her that it would occur during the homecoming event, and walks away from him.

Jessica, possessed, awakens the terra cotta soldiers

Jessica, possessed, awakens the terracotta soldiers

Jessica, possessed by the evil spirit, brings the terracotta soldiers to life as its army. Wendy’s grandmother presents her with a fighting outfit, and is dismayed to find that Wendy is going to homecoming rather than battle evil. Shen goes to battle the evil spirit by himself, but doesn’t have enough strength to do it on his own. As she leaves for homecoming, the ancient masters arrive to take her to the fight, but she still refuses to go, until they tell her that Shen has gone on his own to fight. Wendy finally shows up with the masters and saves Shen before she fights Jessica. As she fights, her grandmother shows up and presents Wendy with her great-grandmother’s fighting robes, which Wendy quickly dons. The terracotta soldiers are soon destroyed by the masters, leaving Wendy alone with Jessica. The spirit soon leaves Jessica, but the battle isn’t over, as it creates a new form from the broken terracotta soldiers. Shen attempts to battle the evil spirit, as does Wendy, but he is too strong for either of them. Shen attempts to sacrifice himself, but Wendy refuses to let him die, using everything she’s learned to keep Shen alive. The two then fight together, defeating the evil spirit once and for all. As the legend ends, the masters reveal that this is Shen’s last life, and he can stay with Wendy, and the couple run off together.

“I didn’t know that I would even be considered until, of course, Mr. Disney heard the recordings, and that’s when the excitement started, that’s when all the butterflies started batting around inside of my stomach, when I was called to see Mr. Disney.”

On May 5, 1929, Jacqueline Ruth “Ilene” Woods was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She began acting at the age of two, and at the age of 15, she was hired to sing on “The Philco Hall of Fame” radio show, which led to her own radio show The Ilene Woods Show. In 1948, David and Livingston asked Woods to record a few songs for them, which were presented to Walt Disney for inclusion in the animated feature film Cinderella. After hearing the demo recordings, Disney himself asked Woods to voice the titular character. Woods accepted, and was surprised to learn that she had won the role against almost 400 people. April 28, 2006 – The Touchstone Pictures Feature Film Stick It is Released to Theaters

vlcsnap-2013-04-28-08h40m28s199

“For someone who hates being judged, you’re one of the most judgmental people I’ve ever met.”

On April 28, 2006, the live-action feature film Stick It was released to theaters through Touchstone Pictures, an alternate film label of the Walt Disney Studios. The film was written and directed by Jessica Bendinger, and stars Missy Peregrym as Haley Graham, Jeff Bridges at Burt Vickerman, Vanessa Lengies as Joanne Charis, Maddy Curley as Mina Hoyt, Nikki SooHoo as Wei Wei Yong, Kellan Lutz as Frank, and John Patrick Amedori as Poot.

The film opens at construction site, with three kids playing in an empty pool, performing tricks with their bikes. Some skateboarders show up and challenge the three bikers for control of the pool. The skateboarder falls, and one of the bikers is able to perform some great moves, until they break through a window of one of the houses, and the alarm is accidentally set off, sending all of the kids on the run. The one who broke through the window is revealed to be 17-year-old Haley Graham, who is soon taken to court. Instead of jail, the judge give Haley two options that Haley’s father is willing to pay for: Texas Military Academy, or a place called VGA. Haley immediately picks the military academy, but the judge picks VGA.

Haley is sent to VGA, where she has a tense meeting with coach Burt Vickerman

She runs into her friends Frank and Poot, the other pair at the pool, who ask where she’s going. She lies and says she’s heading to juvie, and they give her a phone to keep in touch with them. VGA, however, is the Vickerman Gymnastics Academy, and it is revealed that Haley was a well-known gymnast, who walked out on the World’s Competition and cost USA the gold medal. Haley doesn’t take it seriously at all, and is taken by Burt Vickerman, the owner, to a separate gym to train. Haley and Vickerman don’t get along in the beginning, as Haley doesn’t respect him, and Vickerman won’t put up with her antics. Haley immediately makes enemies with Joanne Charis, a girl she used to compete with all the time, and the other gymnasts, who lock her out of the dorm, as they still have a grudge against her walking out at the World Competition.

Vickerman gives Haley an option: if she trains and wins the money at the Classic Competition, she can pay her restitution and go back to regular life. At first, she rebukes his offer, but then decides she wants out, and winning the money at the Classic is the only way, so she begins to train. Frank and Poot break into VGA to help Haley escape, but are soon caught by the moms of the other gymnasts. They have a brief reunion with Haley, but are soon sent away by Vickerman, as Haley needs to prepare for the Classic. After intense training, Vickerman announces to the gym who will be competing in the Classic, and Haley is angered to find she is not on the list. Vickerman then suggests that they have an in-house competition to determine who will go to the Classic. Wei-Wei wins the in-home, followed by Mina, with Haley coming in third. Joanne comes in as an alternate, and is furious. Fortunately for her, the fourth place winner gets injured, and Joanne goes to the Classic.

Everyone at the Classic gives Haley a less-than-friendly welcome, with one girl throwing her drink at her, saying, “That was for Worlds.” Haley tells Wei-Wei and Mina that they should push it instead of sticking to cookie-cutter routines. Vickerman is angry that Haley is upstaging his coaching with the other girls. Haley, however, follows her own advice, and soon shows up on the leader board. Joanne, however, psychs Mina and Wei-Wei out, convincing them that Haley has been telling them to push it so they will screw up and she will win the purse. Haley is soon distracted by her mother showing up, telling her that Vickerman doesn’t respect her and has her father paying him off to keep her at VGA, as no other gym wanted to take her. With everyone seemingly turning against her, Haley can’t take it anymore, and walks out of the competition after her beam routine, refusing to finish. When Vickerman tries to figure out why she’s leaving, he finds out the real reason Haley never finished Worlds: her mother was having an affair with her old coach, and she found out right before the floor competition at Worlds. Frank and Poot pick her up, and they drive away together.

Haley soon meets with the judge, and finds that Vickerman has written a letter to the judge, using the payments from her father to pay her restitution. She continues to hang out with Frank and Poot, but goes back to VGA to thank Vickerman. She decides to stay and take the gym to championships. When she convinces Vickerman to try trampolining again, he gets injured and leaves the girls alone. Frank and Poot show up, taking all the girls out for the evening. Poot scores with Joanne, and he invites her to prom. Joanne is ecstatic about going to prom, but her mother forbids it. Vickerman, however, tells Joanne’s mother that Joanne’s chances of getting to the Olympics are slim to none. Angered, Joanne’s mother pulls her out, but Joanne chooses to stay at VGA.

The judges are biased against Vickerman, as they believe his routines cause more injuries than winners

The National Competition arrives, and Haley tries to make amends for what happened at Worlds. Haley has a problem with what the judges say, as do many of the other contestants, as it’s “not about how well you do, it’s how well you follow their rules.” Although she doesn’t qualify for Worlds, Haley has a chance to compete at the individual events. Mina performs and dominates a difficult vault move, but is distraught that she got a deduction for a silly technicality – her bra strap was showing. The contestants are pissed, and Haley decides to take action against the biased judging: she pulls out her bra straps, and intentionally scratches the event finals. Joanne, in a rare act of kindness, decides to follow Haley’s lead, intentionally scratching. The competitors follow suit, making Mina the automatic winner of the vault event. Joanne then comes up with the idea that the competitors decide the winner of the events rather than the judges.

Wei-Wei gets ready for the beam routine, with the judges rather annoyed with their antics. Tricia Skilken, the winner of the all-around event, steps in and decides to compete, making Wei-Wei nervous, but she decides to give it her all, adding some break dancing moves to her routine. Haley is picked to win on the floor routine, up against Tricia, who is still angry at Haley for walking out at Worlds. Haley is about to go on the floor, when Vickerman pulls her aside and tells her that he is very proud to be her coach, and she shouldn’t dare hold back. This is all Haley wanted to hear, and she gives it her all on the floor routine. Inspired by the actions of the other gymnasts, and by the raw power exerted by Haley, Tricia decides to put aside her pride and scratch, making Haley the new Floor Champion. The film ends with Vickerman informing her that several colleges have looked to scout her for NCAA gymnastics.

April 18, 1946 – Actress and Disney Legend Hayley Mills is Born

vlcsnap-2013-04-17-21h58m54s254

“Walt was very fond of Hayley Mills, as he should be, because she was a wonderful little  actress, and he wasn’t very impressed with most actors and actresses, but as a young girl he thought she had the charm that he wanted in pictures like Pollyanna .” – Matte Artist Peter Ellenshaw

On April 18, 1946, Hayley Catherine Rose Vivien Mills was born in London, England, to actor Sir John Mills and writer Mary Hayley Bell. At the age of 12, Mills played the lead role in the 1959 British crime drama film Tiger Bay. After seeing her performance, Lillian Disney suggested to her husband Walt that Mills would be perfect for the lead role in the upcoming live-action feature film Pollyanna. The role shot her to super-stardom, and she was awarded a special Academy Award  for Most Outstanding Juvenile Performance; she would be the last person to receive this award. She was then cast in the dual role of twins Susan and Sharon in the 1961 film The Parent Trap, which helped cement Mills’ star status. She had a song in the film written by the Sherman Brothers called “Let’s Get Together,” which became a hit song on the Billboard Charts, peaking at number 8. This song lead to the release of an album on the Buena Vista label, called “Let’s Get Together with Hayley Mills.” which had one other hit song, “Johnny Jingo.” She acted in four more films for Disney: In Search of the Castaways, Summer Magic, The Moon-Spinners, and That Darn Cat!.

After her contract with Disney, she starred in the 1966 film The Trouble with Angels, then returned to England, hoping to break out of her girl-next-door image. She played a mentally challenged teenager in the film Sky West and Crooked, written by her mother and directed by her father. She then starred in the films The Family Way, Pretty Polly, Endless Night, and The Kingfisher Caper, after which she left the film business for a few years. She returned to UK series acting in 1981 in the television miniseries The Flame Trees of Thika, and made some other appearances in television work, including appearances in The Love Boat. In 1987, she starred in the Disney Channel series, Good Morning, Miss Bliss as the title character. The show was cancelled after thirteen episodes, and the rights were purchased by NBC, with the show being retooled as Saved by the Bell. Mills also reprised her roles as Sharon and Susan for three made-for-television sequels to The Parent Trap: The Parent Trap II, The Parent Trap III, and The Parent Trap IV: Hawaiian Honeymoon. In 1998, Mills was honored as a Disney Legend.

“Walt Disney called me, and he said, ‘You have a warm, warm voice, and it expresses love from your heart. Also, your voice is so naturally placed that you can use your signing voice as an extension of speech…I want you to drop all of the colors and the things that you feel about Briar Rose to your vocal palette, and I want you to paint with your voice.’”

On April 5, 1930, Mary Costa was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. Her family moved to Los Angeles, California, where, after high school, she entered the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, studying with Gaston Usigli. She was featured on Edgar Bergen’s radio show with his character Charlie McCarthy. In 1952, she auditioned for the role of Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty. March 29, 2011 – Body of Proof Premieres on ABC

BoP_3

“The answers are all here. Because that’s what we do. I honor the body for what it tells me about Angela Swanson’s life, and how that life came to an end. The body is the proof, and will tell you everything you need to know, if you just have the patience to look.”

On March 29, 2011, the new medical series Body of Proof premiered on March 29, 2011, with its pilot episode. The series is about Dr. Megan Hunt, a talented medical examiner, who tries to juggle her personal life with her new job after a serious car accident forced her out of her old position as a neurosurgeon. The series currently is on its third season, and has been met with mixed reviews. It was created by Christopher Murphey, and stars Dana Delany as Megan Hunt, Jeri Ryan as Kate Murphy, John Carroll Lynch as Detective Bud Morris, Nicholas Bishop as Peter Dunlop, Sonja Sohn as Samantha Baker, Mark Valley as Tommy Sullivan, and Elyes Gabel as Adam Lucas.

The episode begins with Dr. Megan Hunt getting a CAT scan, who has been pressuring people for more medical tests for her condition, but the doctors inform her that they can’t find anything wrong with her. Megan had been in a horrible car accident four years prior, and her career as a neurosurgeon is over. She has a new career as a medical examiner, and is soon called to a crime scene, as a body of a female jogger is pulled out of a river. Her partner, medical investigator Peter Dunlop, helps her with the scene, and she meets Detectives Bud Morris (with whom Megan does not get along) and Samantha Baker, who seems impressed at Megan’s skill from the initial meeting.

Megan arrives back at the Philadelphia County Medical Center, where she is highly regarded by the staff for her expertise. She calls her daughter’s cell phone, and it is revealed that she is estranged from her daughter and ex-husband, and is not even invited to attend her daughter’s birthday party. She then heads to the autopsy on the runner, where she frustrates Detective Morris again. Detective Baker then questions Megan as to why, if she used to be a big-shot neurosurgeon, is she working as a medical examiner. Megan replies simply that you can’t kill someone if they’re already dead.

Megan and Peter head to see the study of the brain samples, and finds that Angela has been hit on the head before, which could lead to several conclusions. It turns out that Angela had been pushed down a flight of stairs by her ex-boyfriend and put her in a coma a couple of years ago. When questioning the ex-boyfriend, Megan determines that the ex-boyfriend didn’t do it, once again annoying Morris. Megan and Peter head to Angela’s parents house, and find that her personality did change after her coma. Hearing about how Angela became loving to her family as she had been when she was younger makes Megan miss her daughter all the more, and reveals to Peter that everything spiraled out of control after her accident. Peter advises her to try and have some fun with her daughter rather buy her love, but Megan gets angry and dismisses Peter’s advice. Megan continues to study the body, looking for clues, and finds finger impressions on Angela’s neck. The also find that Angela did have sex before she died, and that the man in question had to have been married.

Megan has lunch with a friend an colleague, asking for his help to find the identity of the mystery lover. He then asks her if this “New Megan” that cares for the dead is for real, or is she just trying to work off the guilt of accidentally killing someone on the operating table. Megan responds weakly that it’s both, and he agrees to help without breaking doctor-patient confidentiality. When they question the man Bradford Paige, Megan jumps into the question of if he slept with Angela. Paige is furious and Megan is thrown out of his office. The case takes a turn when it is revealed that Angela had recently made partner in the law firm after a high-profile case, and Angela had given her client privileged information, which ties in with the personality change from after the coma.

Back at the medical center, Megan is pulled into the chief’s office, where her methods of asking for expensive medical tests are called into question, but Megan once again proves her worth and that she was right. Late at night, Peter finds her still in the lab, and he once again tries to help her see how to reach her daughter. However, the conversation is cut short by a phone call informing the two that Angela’s ex-boyfriend has been taken into custody for Angela’s murder. While he admits that he was in the park at the same time Angela was there, he says he only wanted to confront her about the incident that landed him in jail. Detective Morris, however, thinks he’s guilty. When Megan tells Morris that he has the wrong guy, he angrily suggests that Megan return to her old profession, and the truth of why Megan quit neurosurgery is revealed. When Peter asks her about it, she tells him she learned more about the woman she’d killed on the autopsy table than she ever did while she was alive, and that means a lot to her.

Megan heads to her ex-husband's to give her daughter a special birthday present

Once more at the medical center, Megan works on a hunch and asks some tests be done on Angela’s stomach contents for prescription drugs, and then attends her daughter’s birthday party, invited or not. The present she gives her daughter was a key to Megan’s apartment, telling her daughter she’ll always be welcome there if she just wants to escape from the world. Without really waiting for a response, Megan walks away and heads back to work. The tox screen reveals that Angela has ingested amoxicillin, when she was supposed to be taking another drug. The detectives, Megan, and Peter head to Paige’s house to test Megan’s theory. While Paige finally admits that he did have an affair with Angela, Megan reveals that it was Paige’s wife that killed Angela, who found out about Paige’s affair thanks to Paige passing on strep throat to Angela after catching it from his son. She poisoned Angela’s sports drink with amoxicillin, which Angela was deathly allergic to, causing Angela to go into anaphylactic shock and drown in the river. Detective Morris begrudgingly acknowledges that she was right. Back at the morgue, she is met by Kate, Megan’s boss, who is impressed with Megan’s dedication, but warns her that if she lets every case get too personal, she’ll burn out quickly. Megan then heads home, and finds that her daughter left her some birthday cake on the kitchen counter. Megan samples the cake with a smile.

On March 14, 2010, Princess Tiana’s official induction into the Disney Princess Line took place in Manhattan’s New York Palace. Joined by the other eight members of the line, Tiana arrived in a horse and carriage down Madison Avenue, with many celebrities —  including Audra McDonald, Melissa Joan Hart, Nigel Barker, and Alessandra Ambrosio – and their children waiting to meet her. Anika Noni Rose, the voice of Tiana in The Princess and the Frog, was also there. Once reaching New York Palace, Tiana walked down the processional aisle flanked by fanfare trumpeters to the ceremony stage, where the other princesses greeted her. A royal proclamation of Tiana’s status was read, and she was then crowned by Prince Naveen. This ceremony aligned with the March 16th release of the animated film on Blu-Ray and DVD, and presented the upcoming line of Tiana-themed toys, costumes, and other merchandise. The character has proven to be highly popular, with many products featuring the character becoming either top-sellers or selling out completely.
