May 17, 2013 – Hong Kong Disneyland’s Mystic Point Land Opens

“You will be invited to ride in [Lord Henry Mystic’s] latest invention the ‘Mystic Magneto-Electric Carriage,’ and treated to a front row experience of the precious collection!”

On May 17, 2013, the third and final land of Hong Kong Disneyland’s land expansion project, Mystic Point, opened to the public. The area includes Mystic Manor, a Haunted Mansion-style attraction; Garden of Wonders, a garden area filled with 3D illusionary sculptures; and Mystic Point Freight Depot, where guests can take pictures with recreations of famous antiquities from around the world. The Explorer’s Club Restaurant gives guests a chance to dine on Korean, Japanese, and South East Asian delicacies, while being surrounded by décor from Egypt, Russia, Morocco, India, and China. Guests can also buy very special souvenirs at the Archive Shop, including an explorer’s hat with Mickey Mouse ears.

May 6, 1988 – The Norway Pavilion Opens in Epcot’s World Showcase

“Norway all the way!”

On May 6, 1988, the Norway Pavilion opened in Epcot’s World Showcase at Walt Disney World. This is the most recent country to be added to the showcase. The area features the Maelstrom attraction, a boat ride that explores the heritage of Norway, as well as the myth of the trolls; also featured is the Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe, a quick service bakery filled with Norwegian delicacies, including the famous “School Bread” – a sweet bun filled with vanilla crème custard and topped with toasted coconut. Norway is represented by the Stave Church Gallery, which features an exhibit of the culture and history of the country that inspired the animated film Frozen. Norway also houses the Akershus Royal Banquet Hall, which features a special character dining experience of breakfast with the Disney Princesses.

May 1, 1989 – The Quick-Service Shop Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction Opens

“Dinosaur Gertie’s…was built as a tribute to ‘Gertie the Dinosaur,’ one of the first well-known animated cartoon stars.”

On May 1, 1989, the quick-service ice-cream shop Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction opened in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios. The shop sells several well-known Disney park favorites, including a Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar and a Waffle Cone. The shop was built as a tribute to Windsor McCay’s “Gertie the Trained Dinosaur,” one of the first popular characters in the history of animated film. Walt considered McCay and his creation to be pioneers in the field of the animated film. There are also dinosaur footprints in the concrete leading to the shop, attesting to the attention to detail each Imagineer brings to a project.

April 20, 1991 – The Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant Opens in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios

On April 20, 1991, the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant opened in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios park. Designed to resemble classic drive-in theaters, guests are seated in a car-shaped booth and treated to clips from campy ‘50s films while they enjoy standard American fare like fried dill pickles and the “Famous All-American Picnic Burger.” Guests 21 and older can enjoy alcoholic concoctions, including the Long Island Lunar Tea and the Orbiting Oreos. During Star Wars Weekends, the restaurant is also home to character dining, featuring Darth Vader and Boba Fett among others.

April 12, 1995 – The Walt Disney World Restaurant ‘Ohana Opens

On April 12, 1995, the restaurant ‘Ohana opened at Walt Disney World’s Polynesian Resort, replacing the Papeete Bay Verandah which had closed in September of 1994. The restaurant features an interactive experience for guests, with family style dining while the food is cooked in a fire pit on skewers up to three feet long. Guests are encouraged to participate in several activities, including coconut races, dancing, and fun with hula hoops. The restaurant also features character dining, mainly featuring Lilo and Stitch, but including other characters such as Mickey Mouse.

March 21, 1997 – The Disneyland Restaurant Carnation Café Opens

On March 21, 1997, the Disneyland patio restaurant Carnation Café opened on Main Street. Along with the rest of the street, Carnation Café is designed to have a feel of the turn-of-the-century, and provides standard American dishes for consumption. Carnation Café offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with highlights of the menu including Walt’s homemade meatloaf, parmesan and panko coated fried pickles, and Chef Oscar’s choice breakfast: two eggs, potatoes, a biscuit, and a choice of bacon or sausage. On June 13, 2012, the café was expanded into the area previously occupied by the Blue Ribbon Bakery, giving the café a new dining room; the menu was revamped to match the changes of the restaurant.

March 18, 1967 – The Blue Bayou Restaurant Opens in Disneyland’s New Orleans Square

On March 18, 1967, the Blue Bayou Restaurant opened in the New Orleans Square area of Disneyland. The restaurant is considered one of the most attractive dining areas in the entire park, and has also been considered a “must-do” part of any Disneyland visit. Located in the same building as the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, diners are able to watch as guests travel through the attraction while enjoying a special nighttime atmosphere reminiscent of summers in the bayou. Versions of this restaurant have been opened in Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris.

March 10, 1996 – The Fulton Crab House Restaurant Opens in Walt Disney World’s Pleasure Island

On March 10, 1996, the Fulton Crab House restaurant opened in Walt Disney World’s Pleasure Island part of Downtown Disney. The restaurant was built on the former Empress Lilly riverboat, which was a moored riverboat that featured three restaurants and was considered the most elegant dining experience in the park. Fulton’s features a decadent seafood menus, as well as the choicest cuts of beef; the restaurant is also an 11-time winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, with their wine cellar holding over 2,000 bottles.

January 8, 1962 – The Popular Frontierland Restaurant Swift’s Chicken Plantation Closes

“Swift’s Chicken Plantation House was Walt’s reply to the incredibly successful chicken restaurant at Knott’s Berry Farm in nearby Buena Park.” – Sam Gennawey, The Disneyland Story.

On January 8, 1962, the popular Disneyland Frontierland restaurant known as Swift’s Chicken Plantation closed. It had been open since the park’s opening on July 17, 1955, and was known for serving the best meals in the park. The restaurant was sponsored by Swift’s Meats, and served those products. It was located on the shores of the River of America. During the expansion of Frontierland and the building of New Orleans Square, the decision was made to close the restaurant and tear it down to make best use of the space.

December 29, 2011 – Cast Member Oscar Martinez Celebrates 55 Years Working at Disneyland

On December 29, 2011, Carnation Café cook celebrated his 55th anniversary working at Disneyland. Martinez began employment as a busboy, and has become a favorite of many guests through his tenure, as well as having trained several thousands of cast members. Martinez was the first cast member to reach this milestone, and was awarded a special Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs-themed service award by George A. Kalogridis, the president of the Disneyland Resort at a special ceremony held at the Main Street Opera House. At the ceremony, Martinez was asked if he was ready to retire, to which he responded that it would be a while before he “[hung his hat] up.”
