April 12, 1992 – The Merchandise Store Sir Mickey’s Boutique Opens in Disneyland Paris

“Cross the stone floor to claim your prized Disney toy, accessory or plush.”

On April 12, 1992, the merchandise store Sir Mickey’s Boutique opened in Disneyland Paris’ Fantasyland. The store, decorated in the style of classic Disney short films Mickey and the Beanstalk and Brave Little Tailor, mainly sells toys and plush dolls, along with a limited variety of related accessories. A similar store opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park in 1996, replacing the Mickey’s Christmas Carol and The AristoCats shops.

February 12, 2016 – Disney CEO Bob Iger is Named to the Toy Industry Hall of Fame

On February 12, 2016, the Toy Industry Association inducted the newest member of the Toy Industry Fall of Fame: CEO of The Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger. Iger was added thanks to his contributions to the toy industry, as well as the “impact his work has had on the lives of children worldwide.” Iger was also recognized for growing the Disney portfolio with the acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, and creating new creative platforms for each of them. He was inducted in a special presentation at the 16th annual Toy of the Year Awards ceremony at the 113th North American International Toy Fair, which also celebrated the Toy Industry Association’s centennial.

February 3, 1930 – Disney Signs First Merchandising Contract

On February 3, 1930, Roy Disney signed The Walt Disney Company’s first merchandising contract of what was to become a multi-million dollar merchandising empire. The contract was with the George Borgfeldt Company of New York, giving them the right to create figurines and toys of Mickey and Minnie Mouse; the first license that the Borgfeldt Company made was with a Swiss firm that created handkerchiefs with the characters’ likenesses. The returns on the products were not great for Disney, as they only received a 2.5% royalty on items that were 50cents or less (about $8.00 today), and 5% royalty on more expensive items.

December 13, 1996 – The Merchandise Store Planet M Opens in Tokyo Disneyland

On December 13, 1996, the general merchandise and toy store Planet M opened in Tokyo Disneyland’s Tomorrowland area. The store’s back story includes Mickey Mouse discovering Planet M, which was full of the raw materials toys are made from, and Mickey then started overseeing production of toys via the new shop. The shop sells a variety of things, ranging from toys to rain gear.

December 6

December 6, 1992 – The Store Tinker Bell’s Treasures Opens in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

On December 6, 1992, the shop Tinker Bell’s Treasures opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. The shop began as the Tinker Bell Toy Shoppe, originally opening in November 1971. The store, originally located next to Mickey’s Philharmagic, featured a variety of Disney Princess and Disney Fairy merchandise. There was also an area where kids could, upon finding a small chest, potentially wake up Tinker Bell. The store was closed in 2010, with the area becoming a part of the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.

October 3, 1996 – World of Disney Opens in Walt Disney World’s Downtown Disney Area

On October 3, 1996, the World of Disney store opened in Walt Disney World’s Downtown Disney Marketplace area. The store is the largest Disney merchandise store in the world, with twelve rooms spanning 50,000 square feet. The store’s contents range from collectible pins, to clothing, to kitchenware, and everything in between. Similar stores have since been built in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney area in 2001, and on Fifth Avenue, New York, in 2004.

September 9, 2011 – Robert Chapek Named President of Disney Consumer Products

“I’m excited about the opportunity to lead our newly expanded team and to grow our brands, franchises, and movie properties in the fast-changing retail and licensing marketplace.”

On September 9, 2011, President and CEO of The Walt Disney Company Bob Iger announced the promotion of Robert Chapek to President of Disney Consumer Products. The naming of Chapek came at the time of the formation of the consolidated consumer products organization, combining the retail lines within the Walt Disney Studios, Pixar, Marvel, and the related consumer and interactive product lines. Chapek was promoted from being the President of Distribution, a role which was then assumed by Alan Bergman, the President of the Walt Disney Studios.

July 5, 1996 – The 500th Disney Store Opens in Phoenix, Arizona

On July 5, 1996, the 500th Disney Store opened in Phoenix, Arizona, making it the state’s sixth Disney Store location overall. Since opening in 1987, the growth of the chain exploded, with stores located in four continents; 100 stores alone were opened in the previous year. In 1996, the Disney Store was Japan’s largest foreign retailer without a Japanese partner, and many stores located oversees were built in popular and prestigious locations, such as Regent Street in London and the Champs Ellysees in Paris.

November 17, 2001 – Build-a-Bear Workshop Opens in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney

On November 17, 2001, the Build-a-Bear Workshop store opened in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney area, across from the WonderGround Gallery. A special event was held for the opening, including a meet-and-greet with the store’s mascot Bearemy, a sweepstakes with the chance to win special store-related prizes, and a Stuffed with Hugs special event for the first 200 guests. The store features, along the usual Build-a-Bear selections, special Disney styles, which guests can take home as a souvenir.

October 6, 2014 – Memento Mori Opens in Walt Disney World

“The Victorian-era phrase ‘Memento Mori’ reminded people of that age ‘to live life to the fullest as everyone is mortal.’”

On October 6, 2014, the Haunted Mansion themed store Memento Mori opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. The store, located in Liberty Square, features special merchandise created to celebrate one of the park’s most popular attractions, including Dooney and Bourke purses, open edition pins, and special “spirit photography” that allows guests to transform into spirits that similar to the other 999 happy haunts.
