December 6, 2012 – The Interactive Attraction Enchanted Tales with Belle Opens in Walt Disney World’s New Fantasyland

“Enjoy an interactive story adventure featuring Belle, Lumiere, and you!”

On December 6, 2012, the interactive attraction Enchanted Tales with Belle opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom as part of the New Fantasyland expansion. Guests are taken to Maurice’s cottage, where they find that Belle and Beast gave him a magic mirror to visit Belle at the castle any time he wishes; guests are then taken through the mirror to the castle, where they are selected to play special roles to tell the story of Beauty and the Beast for Belle, who is getting ready to meet the Beast for dinner and dancing that night. Lumiere acts as the narrator for the story, and directs the guests in a chance to surprise Belle with a wonderful story. All guests that are selected to be a part of the story get their picture taken with Belle, a special PhotoPass card, and a special gift as a thanks for participating.

September 16, 1991 – The Live Show Muppets on Location: Days of Swine and Roses Begins in Disney-MGM Studios

On September 16, 1991, the live show Muppets on Location: Days of Swine and Roses began its run in Walt Disney World’s Disney-MGM Studios. The show ran behind the area of the Muppet*Vision 3D attraction, and ran until January 23, 1994. Featuring a plot about the Muppets filming a movie, the characters included favorites Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo the Great, Bean Bunny, and the Electric Mayhem. The characters would interact with the audience during the show, signing autographs and helping amp up audience participation.

August 24, 2012 – Goofy’s Paint ‘n’ Play House Attraction Opens in Tokyo Disneyland

On August 24, 2012, the Goofy’s Paint ‘n’ Play attraction opened in Tokyo Disneyland’s Toontown area. The attraction uses a special computer program called the Toontone Splat Master paint applicator, which gives guests the change to redecorate Goofy’s house in any manner they wish, ranging from a beach theme to a jungle theme. Guests grab the handle of the paint applicator and either push a button, turn a handle, or pull a string to make the effect work.

July 2, 1993 – The Dinner Theater Area Aladdin’s Oasis Opens in Disneyland

On July 2, 1993, the dinner theater-style entertainment area Aladdin’s Oasis opened in Disneyland, replacing the Tahitian Terrace. The show was released to capitalize on the success of the 1992 animated feature film. The area gave guests a show filled with songs and dances by characters from the film while they enjoyed Americanized-versions of Middle Eastern food, including papadam wafers and tabbouleh. The show was discontinued after a couple of years, but the restaurant was still in operation until 1997, when it became a storytelling area; it has since become a meet-and-greet area where guests can meet Aladdin and Jasmine.

June 19

June 19, 1998 – DisneyQuest Opens in Downtown Disney

On June 19, 1998, the interactive indoor attraction DisneyQuest opened in Walt Disney World’s Downtown Disney West Side. The area features five floors of activities, randing from virtual reality games, to animation instruction, to classic video games. Many of the games feature popular Disney characters, including Aladdin (Aladdin’s Magic Carpet Ride virtual game) and Buzz Lightyear (Buzz Lightyear’s Astroblasters). A second DisneyQuest opened in Chicago on June 16, 1999, but closed in 2001 due to low attendance. Although other attempts to take DisneyQuest outside the park were planned, the projects were shelved indefinitely due to the closing of the Chicago location.

June 11, 2010 – The Nighttime Show World of Color Premieres in Disneyland’s California Adventure

“Watch images of characters come to life on a veil of mist, while water forms fanciful shapes in time to memorable music.”

On June 11, 2010, the nighttime show World of Color premiered at Disneyland’s California Adventure park. The show takes place at Paradise Bay in the Paradise Pier area, and is an outdoor light and music extravaganza, with over 1,000 fountains shooting enough water to create a 19,000 square-foot screen, where 28 projectors display clips from classic Disney movies. Music plays in time with the projected clips, ranging from all across Disney film history. The show has become immensely popular, and is frequently updated for special events or holidays. Special “Glow with the Show” ear hats are also available for guests to purchase, and the ears glow to match the rhythm of the show.

May 31, 2013 – The Interactive Game A Pirate’s Adventure: Treasures of the Seven Seas Begins in Walt Disney World

“Discover hidden treasures, fend off enemies, and join Captain Jack on an interactive adventure of a lifetime.”

On May 31, the interactive park game A Pirate’s Adventure: Treasures of the Seven Seas began in Walt Disney World. Similar to Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom, guests first go to an area called The Crow’s Nest and are given a map to find spots hidden in Adventureland of the Magic Kingdom on one of five searches for treasure: Heads You Lose, Guardian’s Curse, Haven Defense, A King’s Ransom, and Blackbeard. The adventures are based on the Pirates of the Caribbean series of films, including the characters of Jack Sparrow and Captain Barbossa. Any guest is able to play the game, and each mission takes about twenty minutes, although guests can stop and resume at any time.

May 19, 1971 – The Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes Attraction Opens in Disneyland’s Critter Country

“Travel back to a time when water was the fastest mode of transportation.”

On May 19, 1971, the Critter Country attraction Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes opened. Originally a Frontierland attraction called Indian War Canoes, the attraction was closed in 1971 and moved to Critter Country. The dock of the attraction has moved several times due to the natural changes of the banks of the Rivers of America. This is one of the only attractions that requires a large amount of guest participation, as guests must use the paddles to move the 35-foot long canoes around Tom Sawyer Island. The Disneyland version has been replicated in other parks, including Walt Disney World (the attraction closed in 1993) and Tokyo Disneyland (the attraction was renamed the Beaver Brothers Explorer Canoes in 1992).

February 22, 2012 – The Interactive Game Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom Launches at Walt Disney World

“Roam Magic Kingdom park in search of clues and use your newfound magical powers to defeat dastardly Disney Villains.”

On February 22, 2012, the interactive role-play game Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom launched after weeks of testing. Taking place in the Magic Kingdom park of Walt Disney World, guests are asked to assist Merlin in his quest to stop Hades from taking over the Magic Kingdom and collecting the pieces of the Crystal of the Magic Kingdom. There are three levels of gameplay: easy, medium, and hard. Guests are given a key card and a pack of cards, which are free with admission to the park, and are sent to special portals throughout the park to defeat a series of Disney villains the likes of Scar, Yzma, and Maleficent. There are seventy cards for guests to collect, each card with a different spell that interacts with the magic portals. After defeating all eight villains, guests have a final battle against Hades; after winning, guests are free to pick up a new pack of cards and begin a new game.

July 6, 2012 – Agent P’s World Showcase Adventure Opens in Walt Disney World’s Epcot

“Attention secret agents! Your mission, beginning now, is to join Agent P in Epcot’s World Showcase to help him thwart the plans of the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz.”

On July 6, 2012, the Phineas and Ferb interactive game “Agent P’s World Showcase Adventure” was launched it Epcot’s World Showcase at Walt Disney World. Based on the hit Disney Channel animated series Phineas and Ferb, guests join the character Agent P to track down and stop the plans of the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Guests are given a device called a F.O.N.E (Field Operative Notifications Equipment) at one of four kiosks located in Norway and Italy pavilions in the World Showcase. Through the F.O.N.E, clues are provided to help guests locate several “Inators,” inventions by Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Two to four agents are able to use the F.O.N.E, with each mission lasting between 30 to 45 minutes.
