November 20, 1993 – The Dedication Ceremony for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame Plaza is Held in Disney-MGM Studios

On November 20, 1993, a dedication ceremony was held in Disney-MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios) to honor the installation of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame Plaza. Mirroring the hall of fame located in California, the area features busts of trailblazers and icons in the field of television that have been honored with the award, ranging from Oprah Winfrey to Lucille Ball, and of course featuring Walt Disney. The exhibit is outdoors, and open from park open to close.

October 22

October 22, 2010 – The Rolling Stage Show “Disney Channel Rocks!” Premieres in Disney’s Hollywood Studios

On October 22, 2010, the rolling stage show “Disney Channel Rocks!” premiered in Disney’s Hollywood Studios Park. The show traveled along Hollywood Boulevard before stopping for its main performance in front of the Sorcerer’s Hat. It was similar to its predecessor, “High School Musical 3: Senior Year – Right Here! Right Now!” in its format and showcasing song structure. The show itself featured music from several popular Disney Channel films, including Camp Rock and StarStruck. It closed on April 6, 2013.

August 24, 1989 – The Ewok Village Area Opens in Disney-MGM Studios

On August 24, 1989, the Ewok Village area opened at Disney-MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios) at the entrance of the Star Tours attraction. Based on the village found on forest moon of Endor from the Star Wars film Return of the Jedi, guests queue around the village on their way to the attraction. At night, the area is lit up to give the illusion that the Ewoks are around, and they can be heard talking and singing as guests make their way to Star Tours.

April 22, 1999 – The Sound Effects Show Sounds Dangerous Opens in Hollywood Studios

On April 22, 1999, the audio sound effects show Sounds Dangerous opened in the ABC Sound Studio, located in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios. The show was hosted by comedian Drew Carey, best known for ABC’s The Drew Carey Show and Whose Line is it Anyway?, playing the part of an undercover detective named Foster. Guests were given headphones and told they would be participating in a test pilot for a new show called Undercover Live. The attraction was altered in 2009, when it was told it would operate seasonally. On May 18, 2012, the attraction was officially closed; the space has since been used to show previews of new Disney films.

April 3, 1989 – The Walt Disney World Park Disney-MGM Studios is Covered in Newsweek

“Disney World Unveils a $1 Billion Movieland”

On April 3, 1989, an issue of Newsweek was released featuring Mickey Mouse on the front cover as Sorcerer Mickey. The cover article focused on the opening of Walt Disney World’s newest park, Disney-MGM Studios (now known as Hollywood Studios), which was scheduled to open on May 1st of that year. Newsweek was allowed to go behind the scenes of the creation of the new park and explored other areas of Disney success in the process, including Cast Members and their standards, and, of course, then-CEO Michael Eisner. Other potential ventures were explored in the article, including the water park Typhoon Lagoon, Epcot’s Wonders of Life pavilion, and the new resorts The Swan and The Dolphin.

March 15, 1999 – The Live Show Disney’s Doug Live Opens at Disney-MGM Studios

On March 15, 1999, the live stage show Disney’s Doug Live opened at Walt Disney World’s Disney-MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios). It replaced SuperStar Television at the ABC TV Theater, and was based on the Disney cartoon Doug, which Disney acquired in 1996. The live show featured actors portraying the well-known characters, including the titular character, his crush Patti Mayonaise, and his dog Porkchop. The story for the show consisted of Doug winning tickets to see his favorite band, The Beets, and trying to ask Patti to accompany him, although many of his attempts go awry. The show closed on May 12, 2001.

December 17, 1990 – The Honey I Shrunk the Kids Adventure Zone Attraction Opens in Disney-MGM Studios

“Discover what it’s like to be the size of a bug at this large-scale, backyard-themed play space.”

On December 17, 1990, the Honey I Shrunk the Kids Adventure Zone interactive attraction opened in Walt Disney World’s Disney-MGM Studios (now known as Hollywood Studios). Based on the 1989 live-action film, the area gives guests the feeling of having been shrunk by inventor Wayne Szalinski and have to make their way through the backyard, including 30-feet-tall blades of grass, giant bumblebees, and enormous ants. The area is a popular attraction for younger kids and preschoolers.

December 16, 1990 – The Commissary Opens in Hollywood Studios

On December 16, 1990, The Commissary restaurant opened in Hollywood Studios. The quick-service restaurant is decorated in an Art Deco style, reminiscent of the style of Old Hollywood. Its menu features popular dishes such as a chicken club, New York strip steak, and roasted salmon. On July 1, 1997, the restaurant was renamed ABC Commissary, named after the Disney owned television channel, and features trailers and behind-the-scenes looks of popular ABC shows on its many television screens.

September 16, 1991 – The Live Show Muppets on Location: Days of Swine and Roses Begins in Disney-MGM Studios

On September 16, 1991, the live show Muppets on Location: Days of Swine and Roses began its run in Walt Disney World’s Disney-MGM Studios. The show ran behind the area of the Muppet*Vision 3D attraction, and ran until January 23, 1994. Featuring a plot about the Muppets filming a movie, the characters included favorites Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo the Great, Bean Bunny, and the Electric Mayhem. The characters would interact with the audience during the show, signing autographs and helping amp up audience participation.

August 25, 1989 – The Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular Opens in Walt Disney World’s Disney-MGM Studios

On August 25, 1989, the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular opened in Walt Disney World’s Disney-MGM Studios (now known as Hollywood Studios). Guests are taken behind the scenes of the hit film series to learn how the special effects and stunts are performed. A select number of guests are picked from the audience to act as extras, wearing costumes to fit the scene. After the show, guests can stick around to take pictures with Indy.
