April 13, 2012 – The Premiere of the Disneynature Film Chimpanzee is Held in Downtown Disney

“Disneynature joined forces with the Jane Goodall Institute for a special ‘See Chimpanzee, Save Chimpanzees’ program.”

On April 13, 2012, a red carpet world premiere event was held for Disneynature’s newest film Chimpanzee. The world premiere was held at Downtown Disney in Florida’s Walt Disney World Resort, and included guests of all types, including producer Don Hahn, Jane Goodal, and special Disney Channel stars. The event was planned with the Jane Goodall Institute, with Disneynature making a donation through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to the JGI program with every ticket sold for the film in its first week.

October 6, 2007 – The Documentary Film The Pixar Story Premieres at the Mill Valley Film Festival

“For the last twenty years, a group of artists and scientists have transformed two-dimensional drawings into their own three-dimensional worlds.”

On October 6, 2007, the documentary film The Pixar Story premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival in San Rafael, California. The film tells the story of the creation of Pixar studios from its humble beginnings, as well as discussing the development of computer animation. Interviewees include John Lasseter, Ed Catmull, Steve Jobs, Alvy Ray Smith, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, Tom Hanks, and Tim Allen. The film was written and directed by Leslie Iwerks, and narrated by Stacy Keach. It was included as a bonus feature on the DVD/Blu-Ray release of the Pixar feature film WALL-E.

May 7, 2011 – The Premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Takes Place at Disneyland

“Ye come seekin’ adventure with salty old pirates, eh?”

On May 7, the premiere of the live-action film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides took place at Disneyland. This premiere made history, as it was the first-ever 3D outdoor film premiere. While tickets were available for $1000 each, funds from ticket sales went directly to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. A limited number of park guests were able to attend the red carpet arrivals event for free, with hopes of catching a glimpse of the many celebrities invited, including the stars of the film. The “red carpet,” as it were, was a black carpet for the premiere, keeping with the dark tones of the film. The film would later be generally released on May 20th.

November 13, 1999 – Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 2 Premieres at the El Capitan Theater

On November 13, 1999, Disney/Pixar’s third computer animated feature Toy Story 2 had its official premiere at the Disney owned El Capitan Theater in Los Angeles, California. It was a star studded event, with the cast of the film in attendance with director Jon Lasseter, co-directors Ash Brannon and Lee Unkrich, and producers Helene Plotkin and Karen Robert Jackson. Also in attendance were the likes of Nicholas Cage, Jerry Seinfeld, and Haley Joel Osment. The event began at noon, with the actual screening of the film beginning at 2 p.m. The film would be released in an exclusive engagement at the El Capitan on November 19, with a general release nationwide on November 24.

August 7, 2004 – The World Premiere of The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement  is held at the AMC Downtown Disney Theaters

On August 7, 2004, the world premiere for the feature film The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement was held at the AMC Downtown Disney Theaters in Disneyland. Many characters from Disney films were present, including Mickey and friends, as well as several of the Disney Princesses and their princes. Several celebrities were in attendance to view the film, including Marcia Gay Harden, Emma Roberts, and Ed Begley Jr. Many members of the cast and crew were on hand for the event, including director Garry Marshall, executive producer Whitney Houston, and actors Chris Pine, Julie Andrews, and Anne Hathaway. American Idol Winner Kelly Clarkson, whose single “Breakaway” is featured in the film, also made an appearance at the premiere. The film would have its general release on August 11.

July 26, 1951 – Alice in Wonderland Premieres at London’s Leicester Square Theater

On July 26, 1951, the world premiere of Walt Disney’s 13th animated feature film Alice in Wonderland took place in London’s Leicester Square Theater. Walt Disney attended the premiere, as did Kathryn Beaumont, the voice of Alice. The film was also due to premiere the same day in New York City, but the date was delayed two days, as it coincided with the release of another adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s work: a feature-length puppet version by French filmmaker Lou Bunin (this film would fail at the box office). Unfortunately, the film was criticized for “Americanizing” a British classic, and was a disappointment on its release, earning only $2.4 million at the box office. Walt Disney would later say that the film failed because the character of Alice had no “heart.” It would find its audience in the 1970s, and became a success on home video.

December 21, 1937 – Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Premieres at the Carthay Circle Theater

“Walt Disney, who created these lovable characters, brings to motion pictures a new medium for a greater art. And it looks like a ‘Snow White’ Christmas for all!”

On December 21, 1937, after beginning production in 1934, Walt Disney’s first full-length animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, premiered at the Carthay Circle Theater in Los Angeles, California. Many of those who attended had called the film “Walt’s Folly;” many celebrities also attended the premiere, including Shirley Temple, Marlene Dietrich, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, Ginger Rogers, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, and Charlie Chaplin. There were even actors in dwarf costumes, and a special appearance by Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and Donald Duck. Life size replicas of the dwarfs’ cottage were created for the event. The film received a standing ovation, and grossed more than $8 million, which was quite a feat at the time, since a movie ticket cost about 10 cents. Snow White was the highest grossing film of all time, until it was surpassed by Gone With the Wind. The film was generally released on February 4th, 1938.
