January 24, 2000 – Robert Iger is Named President of The Walt Disney Company

On January 24, 2000, Robert Iger was named as the President of the Walt Disney Company, filling the spot left open after Michael Ovitz left in 1996. Iger had started his career with ABC in 1974 and rose through the ranks to become the President and COO in 1994. After ABC’s merger with Disney, Iger remained the head of ABC before switching in 1999 to the President of Disney’s International Operations. Along with his promotion to the number 2 executive position within the company, Iger was also appointed to the board of directors.

January 8, 2007 – The New Disney.com Portal is Unveiled at the International Consumer Electronics Show

On January 8, 2007, President and CEO of the Walt Disney Company Bob Iger was on hand at the International Consumer Electronics Show, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, to present several new technological advancements for the company, including the new Disney.com portal. Among the advancements mentioned were the acquisition of Pixar in early2006, the hit ABC show Lost and its distinction as one of the first series offered on iTunes, ESPN’s updated media presentation for Monday Night Football, and virtual games including Pirates of the Caribbean Online.

January 4, 1956 – The First Part of “When Knighthood Was in Flower” Premieres on Television

On January 4, 1956, the first part of the two-part television episode “When Knighthood Was in Flower” premiered on the Disney anthology series Disneyland. This two-part episode was the premiere of the live-action feature film The Sword and the Rose, which had been released to theaters on July 23, 1953, edited for a television audience and broadcasted in black and white. The title for the television airing is taken from the book on which the film was originally based, written by Edwin Caskoden (pen name for American author Charles Major). The second episode would premiere on January 11, 1956.

December 29, 1954 – The Disney Anthology Episode “Beaver Valley/Cameras in Africa” Premieres on ABC

On December 29, 1954, the Disneyland episode “Beaver Valley/Cameras in Africa” premiered in ABC. Part of the Disney anthology series, this episode showed an edited version Disney’s True-Life Adventure featurette Beaver Valley along with some behind the scenes footage of the filming for The African Lion. The footage for the latter segment included a look with Alfred and Elma Milotte, who shot many of the True-Life Adventures for the company, as they film many of Africa’s wildlife. The African Lion would go on to premiere in theaters on September 14, 1955. This episode would eventually be rerun under the title “Cameras in Africa/Beaver Valley.”

December 22, 1954 – The Disney Anthology Episode “A Present for Donald” Premieres

On December 22, 1954, the Disney Anthology episode “A Present for Donald” premiered on ABC. The episode is a holiday special, and features segments from the animated feature film The Three Caballeros, though Donald is receiving Christmas presents rather than birthday presents.

December 3, 2010 – Disney Announces Ben Sherwood as New President of ABC News

On December 3, 2010, the Disney/ABC Television Group released an announcement that journalist and author Ben Sherwood would take over as the president of ABC News. Sherwood, a former executive producer of Good Morning America and best-selling author of The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud, began working with ABC News in 1989 as an investigative associate producer and producer for PrimeTime Live, leaving in 1997 to join NBC’s Nightly News with Tom Brokaw as a broadcast producer. He returned to ABC in 2004 to serve as the executive producer of Good Morning America, leading the programs to two of its most successful seasons in the show’s history.

October 27, 2015 – The Live-Action Series Wicked City Premieres on ABC

On October 27, 2015, the live-action procedural series Wicked City premiered on ABC. Set in Los Angeles in 1982, the series follows two detectives on the trail of a pair of serial killers running loose on the Sunset Strip. However, due to poor reviews from critics and little interest from viewers, only three episodes aired before the series was pulled and cancelled, with the five remaining episodes made available on Hulu later that year. The series was created by Steven Baigelman, and starred Jeremy Sisto as Jack Roth, Taissa Farmiga as Karen McClaren, Gabriel Luna as Paco Contreras, Jaime Ray Newman as Allison Roth, Evan Ross as Diver Hawkes, Ed Westwick as Kent Grainger, Anne Winters as Vicki Roth, Karolina Wydra as Dianne Kubek, and Erika Christensen as Betty Beaumontaine.

September 17, 2004 – Eleven New Inductees are Named Disney Legends

On September 17, 2004, the newest group of Disney Legends were honored at a special ceremony at the Disney Legends Plaza at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. The ceremonies were presided over by then CEO Michael Eisner, who originally created the honor in 1987. The honorees that were present participated in the handprint ceremony, with their handprints then hung in the plaza for all to see. Among those honored were film and television producer Bill Anderson, actor Tim Conway, Imagineer Rolly Crump, Imagineer Alice Davis, actress Karen Dotrice, actor Matthew Garber, ABC Chairman of the Board Leonard Goldenson, Imagineer Bob Gurr, conductor and orchestrator Irwin Kostal, Imagineer Ralph Kent, and animator and story man Mel Shaw.

September 14, 2002 – The Animated Series Disney’s Fillmore! Premieres on ABC Kids

On September 14, 2002, the animated series Disney’s Fillmore! premiered on the ABC Kids programming block. The series revolved around main character Cornelius Fillmore, a teenage delinquent with a choice of redemption through his work with the Safety Patrol at X Middle School. The series was cancelled after two seasons with 26 episodes released, and has since attracted a strong, loyal fanbase. The series was created by Scott M. Gimple, and featured Orlando Brown as Cornelius Fillmore, Tara Strong as Ingrid Third, Horatio Sanz as Horation Vallejo, Lauren Tom as Karen Tehama, Danny Tamberelli as Joseph Anza, Kyle Sullivan as Danny O’Farrell, and Wendie Malick as Dawn S. Folsom.

September 10, 2012 – The Daytime Talk Show Katie Premieres on ABC

On September 10, 2012, the daytime talk show Katie premiered in syndication on ABC. The show was hosted by former ABC correspondent Katie Couric, who used the show to talk about a variety of issues, which Couric described as “…the news and issues that I think people care about, whether it’s bullying or the effect technology has on our kids.” ABC affiliates were encouraged to air the program at 3pm EST. Although the show was the number one new syndicated talk show of the 2012-2013 season, ABC and Couric mutually decided to cancel the show on December 19, 2013, with the last episode premiering on July 30, 2014.
