January 27, 1998 – The Compilation Album Winnie the Pooh: Friends Forever is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On January 27, 1998, the compilation album Winnie the Pooh: Friends Forever was released through Walt Disney Records. The album featured several original songs about friendship inspired by the Winnie the Pooh series, featuring artists such as Mark Lennon, Nancy Bryan, and the cast of Winnie the Pooh. This album is one of many compilation albums released for the Winnie the Pooh franchise, and features songs with strong Celtic and acoustic influences.

January 3

January 3, 1994 – The Epcot Audio-Animatronic Show Kitchen Kabaret Closes

On January 3, 1994, the Audio-Animatronic show Kitchen Kabaret, located in Epcot’s The Land pavilion, closed, having run for a little over 11 years. The show presented nutrition through the use of Audio-Animatronic food groups, led by Bonnie Appetit, singing songs such as “Veggie Veggie Fruit Fruit” and “Boogie Woogie Bakery Boy.” For most of the show’s run, it had a sponsorship by Kraft; company sponsorships were fairly commonplace within many Epcot attractions. The show was replaced by Food Rocks, which opened on March 26, 1994.

December 19

December 19, 1999 – The Playground Area La Plage des Pirates Opens n Disneyland Paris

“Grab a cutlass and cut loose in this swashbuckling playground for buccaneering boys and girls.”

On December 19, 1999, the playground area La Plage des Pirates, known as Pirates’ Beach in English, opened in Disneyland Paris’ Adventureland. Loosely based on the animated feature film Peter Pan, the area gives younger children a chance to be pirates and search for treasure near Skull Rock. Kids can play in two different playgrounds, complete with slides, rope ladders, and other interesting activities.

December 13

December 13, 1996 – The Merchandise Store Planet M Opens in Tokyo Disneyland

“Welcome to Planet M”

On December 13, 1996, the general merchandise and toy store Planet M opened in Tokyo Disneyland’s Tomorrowland area. The store’s back story includes Mickey Mouse discovering Planet M, which was full of the raw materials toys are made from, and Mickey then started overseeing production of toys via the new shop. The shop sells a variety of things, ranging from toys to rain gear.

December 10

December 10, 1993 – The Greenhouse Tours Begin in Epcot’s The Land Pavilion

On December 10, 1993, the guided Greenhouse Tours began in Epcot’s The Land Pavilion. Replacing the Tomorrow’s Harvest Tours, the Greenhouse Tours were led by agricultural graduate students through working greenhouses filled with various flora and fauna, explaining agricultural concepts used throughout the park such as hydroponics, aquaculture, and drip irrigation. The tour was renamed the Behind the Seeds Tour in September, 1996.

December 9

December 9, 1993 – Le Passage Enchanté d’Aladdin Attraction Opens in Disneyland Paris

“Set foot inside the winding stone passageways of Agrabah and make your own wishes come true.”

On December 9, 1993, the walkthrough attracktion Le Passage Enchanté d’Aladdin opened in Disneyland Paris’s Adventureland area. Guests walk down passageways, reliving the movie one major scene at a time via miniature scenes. It is recommended for younger guests.

December 6

December 6, 1992 – The Store Tinker Bell’s Treasures Opens in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

On December 6, 1992, the shop Tinker Bell’s Treasures opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. The shop began as the Tinker Bell Toy Shoppe, originally opening in November 1971. The store, originally located next to Mickey’s Philharmagic, featured a variety of Disney Princess and Disney Fairy merchandise. There was also an area where kids could, upon finding a small chest, potentially wake up Tinker Bell. The store was closed in 2010, with the area becoming a part of the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.

November 30

November 30, 1995 – Nine New Disney Legends are Inducted

“Since its inception, the [Disney Legends] program has honored many gifted animators, Imagineers, songwriters, actors, and business leaders as having made a significant impact on the Disney legacy.”

On November 30, the ninth group of Disney Legends was honored and inducted in a special ceremony held in the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. Among those honored were Golden Horseshoe Revue performers Wally Boag, Fulton Burley, and Betty Taylor, actor Dean Jones, actress Angela Lansbury, Disneyland publicist Edward Meck, animator Fred Moore, voice actor Thurl Ravenscroft, and Audio-Animatronic Imagineer Wathel Rogers.

November 28

November 28, 1995 – The Walt Disney World Speedway is Dedicated

“Get a dose of adult-style adrenaline behind the wheel of a real NASCAR race car at Walt Disney World Speedway.”

On November 28, 1995, the Walt Disney World Speedway was officially dedicated. The ceremony for the track, built in a section of the Magic Kingdom parking lot, featured several famous Indy Racing League racers, including Davey Hamilton and Eliseo Salazar. The track was originally used for various racing events, starting with the Formula Ford 2000 support race on January 26, 1996. In 1997, the track was used for the Richard Petty Driving Experience, which gave guests the opportunity to be behind-the-wheel in a real racing car and ride-along in stock cars. The Speedway was officially closed on August 9, 2015.

November 25, 1992 – The Toontown Railroad Station Opens in Disneyland

“Make way to and from Mickey Mouse’s animated metropolis.”

On November 25, 1992, the Toontown Railroad Station opened in Disneyland. The area, originally named Fantasyland Station, was created as part of the Disneyland Railroad loop expansion, which also included Tomorrowland. It was then named the Videopolis Railroad Station when the area was opened in 1985, and became the Toontown Station once Toontown was established. The area is located between it’s a small world.
