September 30, 2012 – The Store Big Top Souvenirs Opens in Storybook Circus

“Come one, come all and gather ‘round this three-ring extravaganza for a magical circus packed with zesty snacks, sweet treats and unforgettable souvenirs…”

On September 30, 2012, the themed merchandise stop Big Top Souvenirs opened in the Storybook Circus area of Magic Kingdom Park, Walt Disney World. Replacing the County Bounty store of the old Mickey’s Toontown Fair area, the store is located just outside of Pete’s Silly Sideshow. The store is a mix of merchandise ranging from Mickey ears to kitchen goods; the store also sells a variety of sweet treats ranging from special drinks to designed candy apples.

September 22, 1991 – The Surprise Celebration Parade Kicks Off in Walt Disney World

“One of 20 spectacular new reasons to visit this year!”

On September 22, 1991, the Surprise Celebration Parade began its run in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. Thrown to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of Walt Disney World, the parade featured 40-feet-tall character balloons that celebrated different festivals from around the world. The parade ran until June 4, 1994, and was followed by the Mickey Mania Parade.

June 20, 1995 – The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter Attraction Opens in Walt Disney World

“If something can’t be done with X-S, then it shouldn’t be done at all.”

On June 20, 1995, the Tomorrowland attraction The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter opened in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. A joint production between Disney and George Lucas, it was a dark sci-fi themed interactive sensory adventure, using binaural sound and other effects to enhance the experience. The attraction’s story takes place in the laboratory for X-S Tech, which is giving guests a demonstration of their new interplanetary teleportation device; this goes awry when an alien is accidentally transported into the lab and terrorizes the guests. The attraction was officially closed on October 11, 2003. On November 16, 2004, Stitch’s Great Escape! opened in its place, using most of the technology from the previous attraction.

May 22, 2015 – Walt Disney World Kicks Off “Coolest Summer Ever” 24-Hour Event

“I can’t wait to kick-off the ‘Coolest Summer Ever’ in Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort!”

On May 22, 2015, the 24-hour even “Coolest Summer Ever” kicked off at 6 a.m. in the Magic Kingdom Park of Walt Disney World. Using Olaf from the animated feature Frozen as the event’s mascot, the event was filled with special shows and treats for guests, including a pajama party as the park stays open through the night, special appearances by the characters from Frozen at the Welcome Show, and appearances from Disney Channel Stars in the Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade.

February 14, 2013 – “A Celebration of True Love” Event is Held at Walt Disney World

“On February 14, you’ll have a special chance to re-commit your promise of love with your significant other during ‘A Celebration of True Love’ at Magic Kingdom Park.”

On February 14, 2013, as part of the Limited Time Magic promotions at the Disney Parks, a special event called “A Celebration of True Love” was held at Walt Disney World. Fifty couples gathered at the steps of Cinderella Castle to renew their vows and celebrate the magic of love and Disney. There was a special appearance by Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora, along with their princes, as well as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, to help the couples celebrate with fireworks and heart-shaped confetti.

January 14, 2014 – The FastPass+ Service Rolls Out in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

On January 14, 2014, the new FastPass+ service was rolled out in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. This new service aims to streamline ride reservations for both on- and off-site guests, and eliminating the legacy FASTPASS services that created paper tickets. Guests could go to one of four FastPass+ kiosks (Pete’s Silly Sideshow, Diamond Horseshoe, Stitch’s Great Escape, and Mickey’s Philharmagic) and choose up to three experiences within the park. Magic Kingdom was the second park to implement the new FastPass+ program, with Animal Kingdom being the first after starting in January.

August 27, 1998 – The Town Square Exhibition Hall Opens in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park

On August 27, 1998, the Town Square Exhibition Hall opened in the Magic Kingdom Park of Walt Disney World. The area housed the Camera Center (hosted by Kodak), and featured camera and photography related exhibits; it also featured a mini theater with Disney cartoons continuously playing, and an exhibit about the history of Walt Disney. The Camera Center closed in 2010, making way for new meet and greets with Mickey Mouse, the Disney Princesses, and Tinker Bell.

May 26, 1990 – Mickey’s Starland Area Opens in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park

“I brought you friends from near and far, you’ll meet them now, each one’s a star.”

On May 26, 1990, the Mickey’s Starland area opened in the Magic Kingdom Park of Walt Disney World. The area replaced the Mickey’s Birthdayland area, which closed on April 22, 1990, at the conclusion of Mickey’s 60th birthday. Many special features from Mickey’s Birthdayland remained, and the new area included a live show called Mickey’s Magical TV World show, with several of the Disney Afternoon characters, including Darkwing Duck and Baloo from TaleSpin. In 1996, the area was revamped and turned into Mickey’s Toontown Fair.
