March 16, 1911 – Artist, Imagineer, and Disney Legend Harper Goff is Born

On March 16, 1911, Ralph Harper Goff was born in Fort Collins, Colorado. His family moved to Santa Ana, California, where he would later attend the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. Afterwards, he moved to New York where he worked as a magazine illustrator. During World War II, Goff was asked to help design camouflage paint at a research facility at Fort Belvoir. After the war, Goff returned to California to work as a set designer for Warner Brothers, with his work being used in such classics as Casablanca, Sergeant York, and Captain Blood. He moved up the ranks to work as an associate producer and art director. After a chance meeting in London in 1951, Goff was invited by Walt Disney to work at the studio to sketch storyboards for a project, which would later evolve into the live-action feature film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The film would go on to win two Academy Awards: one for art director, and one for special effects. Goff was also instrumental in designing concepts for several pavilions for Epcot’s World Showcase in 1975, including Japan, Italy, and the United Kingdom. He was also known for playing the banjo in the Disney Dixieland jazz band Firehouse Five Plus Two. He was inducted as a Disney Legend in 1993; the same year, Goff passed away at the age of 81.

March 12, 2011 – Imagineer and Disneyland Art Director Kim Irvine is Awarded the Themed Entertainment Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award

“The greatest thing about [this award] is it honors the entire on-site group of Imagineers – not just Disneyland by Walt Disney World and Paris, Tokyo, and Hong Kong too.”

On March 12, 2011, the Themed Entertainment Association awarded their lifetime achievement award, also known as the Buzz Price Thea Award, to Imagineer and Disneyland Art Director Kim Irvine. Irvine, who started at Disney in 1970, has had several prominent projects in the park, including the design of the Disneyland Dream Suite, the updated version of Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, and the refurbishment of it’s a small world. Irvine also founded the Disneyland Imagineering office in the early 1980s.

March 11, 2010 – The Sherman Brothers are Honored with a Window on Disneyland’s Main Street

On March 11, 2010, a window dedication ceremony was held for the Sherman Brothers, honoring them for their long legacy of creating memorable tunes for Disney films and park attractions. Richard Sherman was on hand to help unveil the window along with Mickey Mouse, with several prominent members of the Disney Company recalling all the places in the park where you can hear a Sherman Brothers’ song, and the impact it has had on people all over the world. There were also performers at the ceremony to sing a medley of Sherman Brothers’ songs, including songs from their most well-known work, Mary Poppins.

March 9, 2014 – The Festival of Fantasy Parade Debuts in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom

On March 9, 2014, the newest daytime parade, the Festival of Fantasy Parade, debuted in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park. The parade aimed to combine Fantasyland with its newest expansion New Fantasyland, culminating in a parade of grandiose parade floats, special new costumes, and a soundtrack of Disney music featuring old classics and new favorites. Ranging from Peter Pan to Frozen, the parade also features special technological and theatrical elements to give a snapshot of each film, with the most impressive being the Maleficent dragon, a clockwork dragon that has since become the symbol of the parade.

March 6, 2013 – The First Renderings of Shanghai Disney Resort are Revealed at the Annual Company Meeting

On March 6, 2013, the annual Disney shareholders meeting was held in Phoenix, Arizona. Among other announcements, the first renderings of the Shanghai Disney Resort were unveiled by CEO Robert Iger. The park, then scheduled to open at the end of 2015, was a mix of Disney and Chinese stylings, a blend that would be spread over 950 acres, with two hotels, several square feet of retail, and several other entertainment areas.

March 1, 1999 – The Maharajah Jungle Trek Attraction Opens in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park

On March 1, 1999, the Maharajah Jungle Trek attraction opened in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park. Located in Asia, guests are sent into the Anandapur Royal Forest, a former hunting ground turned animal preserve, where they can encounter several types of animals. The area is part of Disney’s commitment to wildlife conservation, providing several endangered species a home with a natural environment, including waterfalls and other jungle flora and fauna. Guests are able to tour the area by themselves, exploring “abandoned temples” while seeing animals in their natural habitats.

February 28, 2003 – The Attraction Test the Limits Lab Opens in Innoventions

On February 28, 2003, the new interactive attraction hosted by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. called Test the Limits Lab opened in Ecpot’s Innoventions area. The area hosted five exhibits for kids to test, acting in the role of an engineer to test products in an effort to teach guests about product safety. The exhibits included tests on firefighters’ helmets and television screens. The attraction closed on January 6, 2015.

February 18, 2000 – The Nighttime Fireworks Show Believe…There’s Magic in the Stars Begins in Disneyland

On February 18, 2000, the nighttime fireworks show Believe…There’s Magic in the Stars began in Disneyland Park. The show, replacing Fantasy in the Sky that had run since 1956, was created to help celebrate the park’s 45th anniversary, and was the most complex show to date. For the holiday season, the show was retooled to Believe…In Holiday Magic. The show used clips and music from several Disney animated features, as well as an interwoven song created just for the show. The song was later released on the park’s official album. The show closed on November 1, 2004, and was replaced by Imagine…A Fantasy in the Sky.

February 17, 2012 – The Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline Show Begins

“Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline opens for business today at Disney California Adventure park.”

On February 17, 2012, the new show Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline began in Disney’s California Adventure park in Condor Flats. The show uses song from the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s to create a retro-style show that can be enjoyed by old and young guests alike, featuring standards such as “Come Fly With Me,” “Straighten Up and Fly Right,” and “Lady of Spain.” There is also a second medley of songs featuring Disney songs that featuring flying, including “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” from Mary Poppins. The show also features a special talking and singing Minnie Mouse, appearing for the first time in Disneyland’s history. The show ended its run on October 20, 2013.

February 2, 2010 – An Endangered White-Cheeked Gibbon is Born in Disney’s Animal Kingdom

On February 2, 2010, the newest member of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, a white-cheeked gibbon, was born. The baby was the fourth gibbon born in the park, and was born to white-cheeked gibbon Melaka. The white-cheeked gibbon is an endangered species, and the birth was part of a survival effort by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, with which Disney’s Animal Kingdom is heavily involved. With gibbons producing offspring once every two to three years, it is important to protect this species from extinction.
