October 11, 2005 – The Cheetah Girls Album Cheetah-licious Christmas is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On October 11, 2005, the Christmas album Cheetah-licious Christmas by the Cheetah Girls was released through Walt Disney Records. It was the first album released by the group that wasn’t a film soundtrack, but does not serve as the group’s official debut. The album featured covers of classic Christmas songs, including “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” and “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus;” the album also features five original Christmas-themed songs, with two of these songs released as promotional singles: “Cheetah-licious Christmas” and “Five More Days ‘til Christmas.” The album peaked at number 74 on the Billboard charts, and a promotional tour was held through the winter of 2005.

October 10, 1961 – Actress, Voice of Ariel and Barbie, and Disney Legend Jodi Benson is Born

“I pretty much came out of the womb singing. I think I was born with the gift to be able to sing, so I can’t take credit for it.”

On October 10, 1961, Jodi Marie Benson was born in Rockford, Illinois. She originally attended college to major in Pre-Law with a minor in theater, but soon switched to pursue a BFA in Musical Theater. She was cast in the musical Smile, which closed after six weeks; there, she met lyricist Howard Ashman, who would invite her to audition for The Little Mermaid, along with all the other girls in the cast. Benson made a reel-to-reel tape, and was selected to be the voice of the main character, Ariel. This role has become Benson’s most famous role to date, and has stated on record that her winning the role was God-ordained. She has continued to voice the character in the television series, the prequel and sequel films, and video games including the character, such as the Kingdom Hearts series. Benson has also re-recorded her signature song “Part of Your World” for the World of Color show at Disney’s California Adventure, and has voiced Ariel once again in the Ariel’s Undersea Adventure attraction. Benson has also voiced the character of Barbie in the Disney Pixar films Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3, and played the character Sam in the live-action Disney feature Enchanted. In 2011, Benson was awarded the honor of being inducted into the Disney Legends. On getting the call for the honor, Benson remarked, “When they called and said we’d like to honor you, I was silent. I thought I would be retired, I thought you had to be dead to get that award…to say thank you to the people who for 25 years have loved and supported me was a blessing.”

September 23, 2008 – Demi Lovato’s Debut Album Don’t Forget is Released Through Hollywood Records

On September 23, 2008, the debut album of recording artist and Disney Channel star Demi Lovato, entitled Don’t Forget, was released through Hollywood Records. The songs on the album were mostly written by Lovato and the Jonas Brothers, and capitalized on the success of the Disney Channel Original Film Camp Rock. The album debuted and peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 charts, and was eventually certified Gold by the RIAA. Two singles were released to promote the album: “Get Back,” and “La La Land.” “Get Back” was released on August 12, and peaked at number 43 on the Billboard Hot 100; “La La Land” was released on April 10, 2009, and peaked at number 52 on the Billboard Hot 100.  “La La Land” was also the first song of Lovato’s to be released internationally.

August 26, 2003 – Hilary Duff’s Debut Album Metamorphosis is Released Through Hollywood Records

On August 26, 2003, Disney Channel star Hilary Duff released her debut album on Hollywood Records, titled Metamorphosis. Released shortly after leaving her hit show Lizzie McGuire, the album was a way for Duff to reach a more mature audience. At the time, Duff had embarked on a storm of projects as she tried to branch away from her Disney image, which included two feature films, clothing and accessory lines, and several marketing lines. The album was promoted heavily on MTV, especially her first single, “So Yesterday.” Three singles were released to promote the album: “So Yesterday,” “Come Clean,” and “Little Voice,” with the third single only being released in Australia. The album received mixed reviews from critics, as many considered it to be a gimmick for Duff rather than anything substantial. The album debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200, selling 203,000 copies in its first week of release; it then peaked at number 1 the next week, despite a drop in sales to 131,000 copies. The album eventually sold 5 million copies worldwide. The success of the album gave Hollywood Records a needed boost in its industry and corporate profile, and helped pave the way for other Disney Channel stars releasing albums, as well as launching brands of Hannah Montana and High School Musical.

August 12, 2008 – The Demi Lovato Single “Get Back” is Released

On August 12, 2008, the first single from the Demi Lovato album Don’t Forget, titled “Get Back,” was released in digital format. It was written by Lovato and the Jonas Brothers, and produced by the Jonas Brothers and John Fields. An edited version of the song for Radio Disney was also released for digital download, and a music video of the single was released on August 22. The single spent six weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, peaking at number 43; the song would also chart on the Canadian Hot 100 (peaking at 93) and the Australian ARIA Hitseekers chart (peaking at 10). The song received positive reviews from critics, with most noting that it sounded like a catchy early ’80s track.

August 8, 1925 – Voice Actress and Disney Legend Ginny Tyler is Born

“And I was raving away to Walt how wonderful Disneyland was, he said, ‘And that goes for my Disneyland Storyteller, too.’ I have never felt prouder in my entire life.”

On August 8, 1925, Merrie Virginia Erlandson was born in Berkeley, California; her family then moved to Seattle when she was a young girl. Steeped in a tradition of storytelling and imitations, Tyler began her career as a voice actor in the 1930s on the radio show Make Believe Island. By the 1950s, the show had been moved to television and renamed Magic Island. In the 1960s, Tyler was hired by the Disney Studios to narrate vinyl records for classic films Bambi and Babes in Toyland, and was known as one of the “Disneyland Storytellers.” Tyler was also a voice actress in several feature films, playing the amorous squirrel in The Sword in the Stone, several barnyard animals in Mary Poppins, and the bees in Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree. When the Mickey Mouse Club was in syndication, Tyler was hired as the Head Mouseketeer for the repackaged show, recording segments live from Disneyland’s Mickey Mouse Club Headquarters, located inside the Main Street Opera House. In 2006, Tyler was inducted as a Disney Legend. She passed away in 2012 at the age of 86,

August 2, 2001 – Stage 2 of the Walt Disney Studios is Dedicated as the Julie Andrews Stage

On August 2, 2001, Stage 2 of the Walt Disney Studios was dedicated as the Julie Andrews Stage in a special ceremony. The stage itself, opening in April of 1949, is the second oldest stage on the studio lot, and one of the largest in the Los Angeles area. It has served many purposes, from filming of The Mickey Mouse Club, to hosting the building of Disneyland attractions. Two of Andrews’ films were filmed on this stage: Mary Poppins and The Princess Diaries. Attending the ceremony to honor Andrews were Roy Disney, Chairman of the Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group Richard Cook, director of The Princess Diaries Gary Marshall and its star Anne Hathaway, Dick Van Dyke, and Richard Sherman of the Sherman Brothers songwriting team.

July 28, 1998 – The First Disney Cruise Land Ship, the Disney Magic, is Christened

“The Disney Magic…is a cruise liner that blends classic beauty and grace with all the modern luxuries, technologies, and comforts that make cruising a pleasure.”

On July 28, 1998, the first ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, known as the Disney Magic, was christened. The christening with a bottle of champagne was done by Roy E. Disney’s wife Patty, who is known as the ship’s Godmother; also in attendance were actor Sidney Poitier, voice actress Jodi Benson, and then-CEO Michael Eisner. Its maiden voyage would take place two days later as it headed to the Caribbean from Port Canaveral, Florida. The ship was built by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, with a cost of $400 million to build. The ship holds around 2,700 passengers in 875 cabins, and weighs 83,000 tons. The idea behind the Disney Magic was to bring back the days of the “golden age” of ocean travel with luxury liners, with an interior built in an Art Deco design. The statue in the lobby of the ship is of Mickey Mouse as a helmsman.

July 20, 1890 – Character Actress Verna Felton is Born

On July 20, 1890, Verna Felton was born in Salinas, California. She began her career in radio, working on Red Skelton’s radio series and The Jack Benny Program. In 1941, Felton was hired as a voice actress for the Disney animated feature film Dumbo as Mrs. Jumbo (Dumbo’s mother) and the Elephant Matriarch. She would continue to be hired by the studio in a variety of roles, including the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella, the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland, Aunt Sarah in Lady and the Tramp, Flora in Sleeping Beauty, and Winifred the Elephant in The Jungle Book. The Jungle Book would be her last role, as she would pass away from a stroke on December 14, 1966, the day before Walt Disney passed away.

July 10, 2007 – Recording Duo Aly & AJ Release Their Third Album Insomniatic Through Hollywood Records

On July 10, 2007, the third studio album by recording duo Aly & AJ, entitled Insomniatic, was released through Hollywood Records. This would be the last release through the label, and after its release, the duo changed their recording name to 78violet. The name of the album was a word the duo created to describe “a state of mind where one becomes addicted to the deprivation of sleep caused by an epic revelation of joy.” The album had two singles released to promote it: “Potential Breakup Song,” released June 26th; and “Like Whoa,” released January 21, 2008. The album features an electronic rock sound, with many of the songs lyrics featuring heartache and loss. ­The album was well received by critics, and peaked at number 15 on the Billboard Charts, selling over 39,000 albums in the first week.
