April 27, 2009 – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Hosts “Milt Kahl: The Animation Michelangelo, A Centennial Celebration”

On April 27, 2009, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hosted a special event titled “Milt Kahl: The Animation Michelangeo, a Centennial Celebration” at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Celebrating the life and works of Disney Legend and Nine Old Men member Milt Kahl, the event was hosted by animator Andreas Deja, and featured a panel of those that worked with or knew the man, including Kathryn Beaumont, Brad Bird, Ron Clements, John Musker, and Floyd Norman. The event featured clips of Kahl’s animation, interviews, and an in-depth analysis of Kahl’s work.

April 14, 1962 – The First Spring Fling is Held at Disneyland

“If you were a teen in Southern California during the 1960s, then Disneyland’s Spring Fling was the place to be and be seen.”

On April 14, 1962, the first dance event known as the Spring Fling took place in Disneyland. Teenagers dressed to the nines and came to the park to dance the night away to popular 60s sounds, with the occasional celebrity guest in attendance, including Annette Funicello. The first Spring Fling featured special prizes for guests, including the chance to win a new car, a trip to San Francisco, and Disneyland tickets. Tickets could cost up to $4.40.

May 24, 2013 – The Monstrous Summer 24 Hour Event Starts at Disneyland and Walt Disney World

“Three Disney theme parks celebrate the beginning of summer with a ‘Monstrous’ bi-coastal All-Nighter.”

On May 24, 2013, to celebrate the release of the Pixar film Monsters University, the three American Disney Parks held an event called “Monstrous Summer,” where the parks were open for a full 24-hours of fun and exciting events. There were limited pieces of merchandise available only during this event, along with special character greetings, parades, and dance parties. A distinctive nighttime spectacular called “Celebrate the Magic” also began during this celebration, and lasted all summer, lighting Cinderella’s Castle with summer-themed images from Disney movies Lilo and Stitch and The Little Mermaid, with a few others. Sweet monster-themed treats were available as part of the celebration, including a Mike Wazowski cake-pop.

January 17, 2005 – The Nighttime Event Cinderellabration: Lights of Romance Begins in Tokyo Disneyland

On January 17, 2005, the nighttime event Cinderellabration: Lights of Romance began its run at Tokyo Disneyland. The event tells the story of the coronation of Cinderella and the ensuing celebration. The area in front of Cinderella’s Castle was transformed into a special garden with a central fountain decorated with crystal sculptures of scenes from the animated film. The entertainment provided for guests included a fortune teller, a shoe merchant selling glass slippers, and various street performers. The Royal Coronation event had Mickey and Minnie Mouse, with other characters, appearing to wish happiness to Cinderella and her prince. After the ceremony, Cinderella tours the garden in her royal coach to greet their guests. The event ended March 18, 2005.

October 1, 1960 – The First Dixieland at Disneyland Event is Held

“See, hear, and dance to these great Dixieland bands!”

On October 1, 1960, the first Dixieland at Disneyland event was held for one night only. Several bands were featured at the event, including Bob Crosby and the Bob Cats, The Elliot Brothers and the Dixie Dandies, Teddy Buckner, Joe Darensbourg and the Dixie Flyers, and Disneyland’s own Disneyland Strawhatters, who had been featured at the park since 1956. The show consisted of a floating Mardi Gras-style parade down the Rivers of America, with several firework effects. The grand finale of the parade was all the bands featured together on the Mark Twain riverboat, playing “When the Saints Come Marching In,” and the bands would disembark and go to six separate locations in the park to perform for guests until midnight. At midnight, the bands would gather together once again and play as an ensemble until 1 am.

September 27, 2008 – The Inaugural Expedition Everest Challenge Takes Place

“Race through Disney’s Animal Kingdom park on a unique course filled with obstacles, clues and wild scenery!”

On September 27, 2008, the inaugural Expedition Everest Challenge took place at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom park. The challenge is a 5K, an obstacle course, and scavenger hunt through the park near the Forbidden Mountain; finishers were awarded a special compass medal. Participants could take the challenge in teams, or try out for the solo challenge. More than 3,000 competitors participated in this inaugural challenge, which took place at night. The winner of the challenge was Thomas Kish from Woodstock, Georgia, finishing the course in 45 minutes, 22 seconds, beating the nearest competitor by at least three minutes.

 

August 18

August 18, 1956 – Carnation Plaza Gardens Opens in Disneyland

On August 18, 1956, the Carnation Plaza Gardens opened in Disneyland. The area, situated between Fantasyland and Frontierland, was home to several entertainment and fast-food stalls, and was home for the Date Nite at Disneyland events, which started in 1957. Several well known swing bands performed at the Gardens, as well as scholastic bands from all over the country. The area was closed in 2012 to make way for the new Fantasyland expansion known as Fantasy Faire; three final Jump, Jive, Boogie Swing Parties were held in the area before it closed on April 30th.

June 28, 1957 – The First Date Nite in Disneyland Event is Held

“Let’s dance at Disneyland! Date Nites are late nights at Disneyland!”

On June 28, 1957, the first Date Nite in Disneyland event was held in the Carnation Plaza Gardens. The park’s hours were extended until 1 AM on Fridays and Saturdays during the summer season, and couples would come in to dance the night away with some of the best names in entertainment. Several bands were invited to play in sections of the park, including The Elliott Brothers, who headlined at the Plaza Gardens. The Golden Horseshoe Saloon was also featured as a venue for dancing, as was the Space Bar in Tomorrowland. In 1958, an album by the Elliot Brothers called “Date Night at Disneyland,” which featured recordings of the band playing popular songs of the time that would have been played during the event, including a track called “Let’s Dance at Disneyland.”

January 16, 1994 – The First Walt Disney World Marathon Takes Place

“Welcome to the 1994 inaugural Walt Disney World Marathon!”

On January 16,1994, 8,500 runners ran the very first Walt Disney World Marathon. The 26.2-mile run took place through the then-three theme parks, including normal and backstage roads. The winner was Leonid Shetsov of Russia with a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 27 seconds. The event took off, and has grown significantly, adding several half-marathons and a 10-miler. The event celebrated its 20th anniversary in January 13, 2013, with a special medal created for the event.
