March 14, 2008 – The Pixar Themed Parade Block Party Bash Begins at Walt Disney World

“All right people, we are ready to celebrate! Let’s launch Mission: Block Party!”

On March 14, 2008, the Pixar-themed parade and stage show Block Party Bash premiered at Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios. The parade came to Walt Disney World three years after it was introduced at Disney’s California Adventure to coincide with Disneyland’s 50th Birthday celebrations. Block Party Bash replaced the Disney Stars and Motor Cars Parade that had previously been show at Hollywood Studios. The parade featured four Pixar films: Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc., and The Incredibles. A combination of stage show and parade, it featured several floats that included a trampoline unit, scooters, and several flying props. The parade ended its run on January 1, 2011, and was replaced with Pixar Pals Countdown to Fun later that year.

July 5, 2003 – The Nighttime Parade Fantillusion Begins in Disneyland Paris

“Mesdames et Messieurs et vous les enfants. Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls. Disneyland Park est d’heureux de vous presenter – proudly presents: the Disney’s Fantillusion Parade!”

On July 5, 2003, the nighttime parade Fantillusion began its run at Disneyland Paris. Based on the parade of the same name from Tokyo Disneyland, the Disneyland Paris version of the parade was presented in three acts: Mickey’s Magical Garden, The Disney Villains, and The Happy Ending. The Paris version of the parade is much smaller than the Tokyo version, using only 15 floats instead of Tokyo’s 31. The parade itself included almost 50 performers a night, along with 400,000 lights and 60 km of cables. The show’s run came to an end on October 31, 2012, and was replaced with The Main Street Electrical Parade.

June 1, 2001 – The Tokyo Disneyland Electrical Parade Dreamlights Resumes its Run

“A nighttime parade full of lights.”

On June 1, 2001, the Tokyo Disneyland Electrical Parade Dreamlights resumed its run after its original closing on June 21, 1995, which was replaced at the time by Disney’s Fantillusion. The parade is Tokyo Disneyland’s version of the Main Street Electrical Parade, the popular nighttime parade that first started in Disneyland on June 17, 1972. The parade begins near the Haunted Mansion and travels past Cinderella’s Castle; it features several beloved Disney characters, including the Genie, Tinkerbell, and, of course, Mickey Mouse. Several albums of music from the parade have been released in Japan, which usually includes the sound effects and character voices from the show. On rainy nights when this parade is cancelled, a special version called “Nightfall Glow” runs, with Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck as the hosts of this mini parade. This mini parade starts in Toontown and runs through Westernland and Fantasyland.

May 23, 1997 – The Light Magic Nighttime Show Begins its Run at Disneyland

“…to dream and to believe that those dreams can come true.”

On May 23, 1997, the nighttime street show Light Magic began its run in Disneyland, replacing the Main Street Electrical Parade. Much like its predecessor, Light Magic was a show presented on four floats, each 80 feet long and 11 feet wide, and featured lights, special effects, and, of course, Disney characters. The show began between the “it’s a small world” attraction and the Matterhorn, and made its way down Main Street. It ended its run on September 1, 1997.

January 11, 1990 – The Party Gras Parade Begins in Disneyland

“Fun and excitement soar to new heights with the biggest, most spectacular parade we’ve ever dreamed up, Party Gras!”

On January 11, 1990, the Party Gras Parade began its run through Disneyland’s Magic Kingdom. It was a celebration of Disneyland’s 35th anniversary, and included floats of Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, Pluto, and Roger Rabbit with giant balloons of the characters. The parade lasted until November 18, 1990, and was also featured in the Sing Along Songs video Disneyland Fun. A version of this parade was created for the Tokyo Disneyland resort, running from 1991 to 1993; another version was created for the Walt Disney World 20th anniversary celebration, called the 20th Anniversary Surprise Celebration Parade.

January 2, 1979 – The Dumbo’s Circus Parade Begins in Walt Disney World

“In 1979, Walt Disney Entertainment brought a parade inspired [by Dumbo] to life in the Magic Kingdom Park in the form of Dumbo’s Circus Parade…”

On January 2, 1979, the Walt Disney World parade Dumbo’s Circus Parade began its run through the Magic Kingdom. Based on the scene in the 1941 film Dumbo when the circus arrives to town, the parade features a float of the train Casey Jr., with various Disney characters playing the part of circus performers. Mickey Mouse played the part of the ringmaster, leading a three ring circus behind the train that featured Donald Duck as a snake charmer, and Goofy as a circus weightlifter. A barrage of clown characters followed behind this, featured on a float that acted as the clown headquarters. The parade lasted until December 21, 1979, and was replaced with the Tencennial Parade on October 1, 1981, which celebrated Walt Disney World’s tenth anniversary.

December 21, 1992 – The Aladdin’s Royal Caravan Parade Begins at Walt Disney World’s Disney-MGM Studios

“Prince Ali, fabulous he, Ali Ababwa, genuflect, show some respect, down on one knee!”

On December 21, 1992, the Aladdin’s Royal Caravan parade began its run at the Disney-MGM Studios park in Walt Disney World. Based on the hit Disney animated feature Aladdin, released November 25, 1992, the parade featured the song “Prince Ali,” sung by actor Robin Williams. One feature of the parade were the spitting camel floats, which had their heads turning side to side and shooting water at the crowds. These camels would eventually be a part of the Magic Carpets of Aladdin attraction in Adventureland of the Magic Kingdom. The parade lasted until August 27, 1995, and was replaced by Toy Story – The Parade.

November 26, 1992 – The New “Santa Goofy” Balloon Premieres in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

“Santa Goofy took the spotlight in 1992, appearing as the “new” balloon in the year’s parade.”

On November 26, 1992, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was held in New York City, New York. One of the newest balloons introduced in the parade was of Goofy, who was dressed as Santa Claus, draped in a wreath and sporting Macy’s stars. This is Goofy’s first appearance in the parade, as Mickey had been introduced in 1934, and Donald Duck had been introduced in 1935. Goofy first appearance was accompanied by 6,000 tap dancers wearing Mickey Mouse Ears, setting a world record for the Largest Assembly of Tap Dancers.

October 21, 1972 – The Three-Day Winnie the Pooh for President Parade and Campaign Begins

On October 21, 1972, a three-day campaign and parade for the election of Winnie the Pooh for President began at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Pooh announced his run for the Demo-Pooh-blican party, with over 50 kids under the age of seven in attendance at the announcement in front of Cinderella’s Castle. His platform was said to have been “disclosing the ‘bear facts’ and bottomless honey jars.” This was the second of three runs Pooh took for political office, with the first being in 1968 as part of On Stage U.S.A, and the third in 1976; the second and third times were tie-ins with the national elections occurring in early November. Pooh was given a special ticker-tape parade down Main Street, and a live stage show with Eeyore and Tigger playing his campaign manager and press secretary, respectfully.

June 17, 1972 – The Main Street Electrical Parade Begins its Run in Disneyland

“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, Disneyland proudly presents our spectacular festival pageant of nighttime magic and imagination, in thousands of sparkling lights, and electro-syntho-magnetic musical sounds: the Main Street Electrical Parade!”

On June 17, 1972, the Main Street Electrical Parade began its run in Disneyland. Originally a summer parade, the lights were dimmed throughout the park as a half a million tiny lights on floats traveled from “it’s a small world” down Main Street to the Town Square. Synthesizer music was used for the parade, with the music a variation of a piece called the “Baroque Hoedown,” with well-known Disney songs woven throughout. The parade was replaced in 1975 with the America on Parade celebrating America’s bicentennial, but returned in 1977 with an new version; an “Honor America” float was then added to the parade in 1979. The parade ended its run in Disneyland on November 25, 1996, with huge crowds lining the street to wish it farewell. In 1999, the floats were sent to Walt Disney World in Florida for their version of the parade, but were sent back in 2001, as Disneyland began the parade again through Disney’s California Adventure under the new name Disney’s Electrical Parade. This newer version of the parade ended its run on April 18, 2010, and was once again sent to Walt Disney World, where it currently still runs.
