October 14, 2006 – Previews Begin for Mary Poppins on Broadway

“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!”

On October 14, 2006, the Broadway version of the musical Mary Poppins began previews at the New Amsterdam Theatre. The musical, a joint production between Disney Theatrical Productions and Cameron Macintosh, had Gavin Lee reprising his role as Bert, while Ashley Brown took over the role of Mary Poppins. The show would officially debut on November 16, 2006, and would go on to be nominated for seven Tony Awards, winning one for Best Scenic Design.

August 28, 2003 – The Live Show The Golden Mickeys Premieres on the Disney Cruise Line

“The Golden Mickeys are tonight!”

On August 28, 2003, the live show The Golden Mickeys began performances on the Disney Cruise Line ship Disney Wonder. The show’s premise is that of an awards show, where the titular award is handed out to various Disney characters in specialized categories, including Heroism and Romance. Characters come from such films as Tarzan, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Tangled. The show is hosted by a reluctant crew member, who has to take over the duties when the real master of ceremonies surprisingly doesn’t show. The show has been performed on the Disney Magic (from 2003 until 2010) and the Disney Dream (beginning in 2011); a version of the show was also performed in Hong Kong Disneyland starting in 2005.

July 31, 2005 – The Stage Show On the Record Ends its Run

“In a magical recording studio, Disney’s best loved music comes to life.”

On July 31, 2005, the jukebox stage musical On the Record ended its touring production. The musical, which opened on November 9, 2004, told the story of four recording artists in a studio, with Disney songs helping to tell their story. The original touring company featured Emily Skinner as Diane, Brian Sutherland as Julian, Ashley Brown as Kristen, and Andrew Samonsky as Nick. The touring production traveled around the United States, playing in 24 cities before ending the run in Denver, Colorado.

July 8, 2007 – The Broadway Musical Tarzan Closes

On July 8, 2007, the Broadway version of the animated feature film Tarzan closed after 35 previews and 486 shows at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Having premiered with mixed reviews, the musical failed to find its footing with audiences. Although the Broadway version ended with a loss, Tarzan managed to find its audience within the Netherlands and Germany.

June 4, 2008 – The United Kingdom Tour Production of Mary Poppins Kicks Off

“The supercalifragilisticexpialidocious international hit!”

On June 4, 2008, the United Kingdom touring production of Mary Poppins kicked off at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth. The tour, opening five months after the West End production closed, traveled to many popular venues within the United Kingdom, including the Hippodrome in Birmingham, and the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. It featured Caroline Sheen as Mary Poppins, Daniel Crossley as Bert, Martin Ball as George Banks, and Louise Bowden as Winifred Banks. The tour concluded on April 18, 2009.

May 27, 2016 – The Live Show Frozen – Live at the Hyperion Opens in Disney’s California Adventure

“Delight in the magic of Frozen like never before in an all-new, larger-than-life stage production.”

On May 27, 2016, the live musical show Frozen – Live at the Hyperion premiered at the Hyperion Theater in Disney’s California Adventure Park. The show, based on the animated feature film Frozen, follows the legacy of other animated films becoming live stage shows, such as the show Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular. The hour-long show features the musical numbers from the film, complete with intricate costumes and sets, including puppetry for characters Olaf and Sven akin to the puppetry used in the Broadway production of The Lion King. The show was directed by Liesl Tommy.

April 24, 2015 – The Musical Show King Triton’s Concert Opens in Tokyo DisneySea

“躍動感あふれる新感覚のミュージカルショー”

On April 24, 2015, the new musical show King Triton’s Concert opened in Tokyo DisneySea’s revamped Mermaid Lagoon Theater. Based on the hit animated feature The Little Mermaid, the musical show features an actress playing Ariel suspended on wires and “swimming” above the audience while singing with friends Sebastian and Flounder. The show is about 14 minutes long, and features a variety of special effects and puppetry.

March 20, 2014 – The Broadway Musical Aladdin Officially Opens

“Proud of your boy, I’ll make you proud of your boy, believe me.”

On March 20, 2014, after a little over three weeks of previews, the newest Disney Broadway musical Aladdin officially opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre. The musical, based on the hit 1992 animated feature film, includes several of the popular musical numbers; it also features three songs that were originally cut from the film: “Proud of Your Boy,” “Babak, Omar, Aladdin, Kassim,” and “High Adventure.” Four new songs were also introduced in the narrative: “These Palace Walls,” “A Million Miles Away,” “Diamond in the Rough,” and “Somebody’s Got Your Back.” The show would go on to be nominated for five Tony awards, winning Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for James Monroe Iglehart’s performance as Genie. The original Broadway cast starred Adam Jacobs as Aladdin, Courtney Reed as Jasmine, James Monroe Iglehart as Genie, and Jonathan Freeman as Jafar.

March 9, 1994 – Previews Begin for Beauty and the Beast at the Palace Theatre

“Is this home? Is this where I should learn to be happy?”

On March 9, 1994, the first preview of the new Disney musical Beauty and the Beast took place at the Palace Theatre, moving from its previous location of Houston, Texas. This was Disney’s first foray into the world of Broadway, and cost between 12 and 20 million to produce. The show would run in previews until its official opening date at the Palace Theatre on April 18.

March 3, 2013 – The Broadway Musical Mary Poppins Plays its Final Performance

On March 3, 2013, the Broadway musical Mary Poppins played its final performance at the New Amsterdam Theatre, after 2,619 performances over six years. The final performance featured Steffanie Leigh as Mary Poppins, Nicolas Dromard as Bert, Karl Kenzler as George Banks, and Megan Osterhaus as Winifred Banks.
