September 14, 2001 – The Attraction Who Wants to Be a Millionaire – Play It Opens in Disney’s California Adventure

“Where in the world can YOU get into the hot seat?”

On September 14, 2001, the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire – Play It interactive attraction opened in Disney’s California Adventure (DCA) park. Based on the hit ABC game show hosted by Regis Philbin, contestants would play at certain intervals, competing for points that could be redeemed for prizes, including the grand prize of a Disney Cruise Line vacation for four. The DCA attraction was similar to the Walt Disney World, which opened on April 7, 2001. A Fastpass was available for the attraction throughout its run, until it closed on August 20, 2004.

February 27, 2007 – Muppet Mobile Lab Has its Test Run in Disney’s California Adventure

“Would you like to help run a battery of tests on all these people?”

On February 27, 2007, the audio-animatronic attraction Muppet Mobile Lab had its first test in front of the public at Disney’s California Adventure. Similar to Push the Talking Trash Can, the audio-animatronic “mobile lab” featuring Muppet characters Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker travel around the park, interacting with guests with the use of special features. Muppet performer Dave Goelz, who created the character of Bunsen, was brought to Glendale to assist with the project, making sure that the Imagineers portrayed the characters correctly. The figure was also tested in Walt Disney World and Hong Kong Disneyland.

February 8, 2001 – The Thrill Attraction California Screamin’ Opens

“The biggest blast on the Boardwalk!”

On February 8, 2001, the thrill attraction California Screamin’ opened in Disneyland California Adventure. The roller coaster was made to be reminiscent of the wooden roller coasters of the Boardwalk, and is the longest steel looping coaster in the world; it is the fastest roller coaster at the Disneyland resort. Guests are taken up an incline of 120-feet before plunging into the ride. Pictures are taken of guests at a specific point in the ride, and are available for purchase at the end of the ride. Although the ride whizzes by quickly, guests are given an aerial tour of Paradise Pier, stretching out for a little over a mile.

June 15, 2012 – Cars Land Opens in Disney’s California Adventure

“Zoom through the desert landscape of Cars Land, inspired by the Disney-Pixar movie Cars.”

On June 15, 2012, the themed expansion area of Disney’s California Adventure, Cars Land, opened. Designed to resemble Radiator Springs from the hit Disney-Pixar Movie, the 12-acre area features several attractions and dining options. One attraction, Radiator Springs Racers, takes guests through the area, letting them view all parts of Radiator Springs while racing against each other. Highlights include Luigi’s Flying Tires (similar to the Flying Saucers attraction from the early days of Disneyland), Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, and Flo’s V8 Café.

June 11, 2010 – The Nighttime Show World of Color Premieres in Disneyland’s California Adventure

“Watch images of characters come to life on a veil of mist, while water forms fanciful shapes in time to memorable music.”

On June 11, 2010, the nighttime show World of Color premiered at Disneyland’s California Adventure park. The show takes place at Paradise Bay in the Paradise Pier area, and is an outdoor light and music extravaganza, with over 1,000 fountains shooting enough water to create a 19,000 square-foot screen, where 28 projectors display clips from classic Disney movies. Music plays in time with the projected clips, ranging from all across Disney film history. The show has become immensely popular, and is frequently updated for special events or holidays. Special “Glow with the Show” ear hats are also available for guests to purchase, and the ears glow to match the rhythm of the show.

May 4, 2009 – The Mickey’s Fun Wheel Attraction Opens in Disney’s California Adventure

“Sail up and over the beaming face of Mickey Mouse aboard this spin-sational Ferris wheel!”

On May 4, 2009, the Mickey’s Fun Wheel attraction opened in Disney’s California Adventure. The original attraction, named the Sun Wheel, was closed on October 13, 2008 for this remodeling. The attraction includes 24 gondolas: 8 that are stationary, and 16 that swing and glide on the rails. It is one of only two “wonder wheel” style of Ferris wheels still operating in the United States. Each gondola gives guests a view of Paradise Bay during the nine-minute ride.
