October 11, 2005 – The Cheetah Girls Album Cheetah-licious Christmas is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On October 11, 2005, the Christmas album Cheetah-licious Christmas by the Cheetah Girls was released through Walt Disney Records. It was the first album released by the group that wasn’t a film soundtrack, but does not serve as the group’s official debut. The album featured covers of classic Christmas songs, including “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” and “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus;” the album also features five original Christmas-themed songs, with two of these songs released as promotional singles: “Cheetah-licious Christmas” and “Five More Days ‘til Christmas.” The album peaked at number 74 on the Billboard charts, and a promotional tour was held through the winter of 2005.

September 17, 2002 – The Compilation Album Disneymania is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On September 17, 2002, the first album in the Disneymania series, Disneymania (also known as Disneymania 1) was released through Walt Disney Records. The idea of the album was to have popular modern musical artists perform various Disney standards, with some songs having music videos released on the Platinum Releases of Disney animated films. The album peaked at number 52 on the Billboard 200 chart, and achieved Gold certification status from the RIAA. Artists involved in this project included Usher, N’Sync, Hilary Duff, and Jessica Simpson. Four singles were released to promote the album: “Reflection” by Christina Aguilera, “Beauty and the Beast” by Jump5, “Colors of the Wind” by Ashanti and Lil’Sis Shi Shi, and “I Wanna Be Like You” by Smash Mouth.

August 17, 2010 – The Album Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On August 17, 2010, the album Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin was released through Walt Disney Records. Wilson was approached by an executive from the Disney Pearl label (a section of Walt Disney Records dedicated to more mature-sounding Disney recordings) to release an album of Disney covers; Wilson agreed, but only if they would let him release an album of Gershwin covers first. Disney agreed, and Wilson was given assistance from Adam Gershwin, who runs the Gershwin Trust. The album was well received by critics, charting at number 26 on the Billboard 200, and selling at number one on Amazon.com.

July 12, 2005 – The CD Version of the LP Record Walt Disney Takes You to Disneyland is Released Through Walt Disney Records 518E201RFNL

“Hello, welcome to Disneyland. We have dedicated this happy place to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America.”

On July 12, 2005, the original 1956 LP Walt Disney Takes You to Disneyland was re-released on compact disc. This LP, narrated by Walt Disney himself, takes guests through the Magic Kingdom, from Adventureland to Fantasyland. Many of the attractions featured throughout the recording are no longer open in the park, but this allows the listener to have a good sense of how the park was when it first opened in 1955. A copy of this album was also included in the CD boxed set A Musical History of Disneyland as a special bonus album for the Special Edition and Limited Edition releases.

May 11, 1913 – Composer, Arranger, and Disney Legend Salvador “Tutti” Camarata is Born

On May 11, 1913, Salvador “Tutti” Camarata was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. He studied music at Julliard, and began his career playing trumpet for the likes of Benny Goodman and Jimmy Dorsey, ­eventually becoming Dorsey’s lead trumpeter and arranger. In 1956, Camarata was hired by Walt Disney to form Disneyland Records, and work to expand the record company from its output of children’s music. Camarata brought in many of his connections in the music industry for concept albums, including Louis Armstrong and Louis Prima. Over a five-year period, Camarata supervised the recording of over 300 albums. His biggest success with the label was the idea of bringing Annette Funicello in as the first artist in residence. While looking for material for Funicello, Camarata discovered Richard and Robert Sherman, and brought them in to the label; they would eventually be the first staff songwriters of the company. He was honored as a Disney Legend in 2003 for his work with music in the company. Camarata passed away in 2005.

April 19, 2005 – The Album Disney Bossa Nova is Released Through Walt Disney Records

On April 19, 2005, the compilation album Disney Bossa Nova was released through Walt Disney Records. Bossa nova itself is a fusion of samba and jazz, which peaked in popularity during the 1960s. The album had classic Disney songs performed by notable Brazilian bossa nova artists, including Marcos Valle, Miucha, Joyce, Bena Lobo, Ana Martins, Ivan Lins, Claudette Soares, Edu Lobo, Carlos Lyra, Wanda Sa, and Joao Donato.

January 27, 1998 – The Album Ariel’s Favorites is Released Through Walt Disney Records

“What’s it like to be a mermaid? Tell me a little of your life in the blue.”

On January 27, 1998, the compact disc album Ariel’s Favorites was released through Walt Disney Records. This album is one of several compilations of songs for The Little Mermaid franchise, with one track exclusive to this album: “Dance the Day Away.” Original voice actors from the 1989 film are featured on this disc, including Jodi Benson as Ariel, Samuel E. Wright as Sebastian, and Buddy Hackett as Scuttle. A few of the other songs are taken from the 1992 animated series, including “Beddie-Bye Blues” with Jo Alaskey and David Lander as their characters Mobster Lobster and Da Shrimp.

October 4, 2005 – Songwriter and Pianist Jim Brickman Releases The Disney Songbook Through Walt Disney Records

On October 4, 2005, songwriter and pianist Jim Brickman released the album The Disney Songbook through Walt Disney Records. The album contains 13 tracks, 11 of which are redone pieces of classic Disney songs ranging from “Beauty and the Beast” to “Someday My Prince Will Come,” with only two songs using vocals:“When I See an Elephant Fly” featuring the vocals of Josh Gracin, and “Baby Mine” featuring the vocals of Kassie de Paiva. Also included are two original songs inspired by the film Cinderella: “Beautiful” featuring the vocals of Wayne Brady, and “I’m Amazed” featuring the vocals of Lila McCann.
