August 24, 2011 – Male African Elephant is Born at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom
“We’re proud to report that the elephant herd at Disney’s Animal Kingdom got just a little larger with the birth…of our newest calf.”
On August 24, 2011, a male elephant calf was born in Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom. The calf, named Jabali, is the sixth elephant born in the park, and weighed 311 pounds on delivery. His mother, Vasha, gave birth in 2004 to a female named Kianga. Under close supervision of the dedicated animal professionals, Vasha was artificially inseminated in 2009 and was given extensive pre-natal care around the clock to help ensure a smooth, safe delivery. Helping keep this herd alive is one of the many conservation efforts done at Disney, with the company at the forefront of understanding and protecting endangered elephant species.
